Coming Northern Invasion Attempt of Israel

August 27, 2011 at 2:47 PM

It amazes me that when you read the news on the ‘Net or in the papers, there is usually at least one article that references Israel, the nation.  It is normally an article that is not in Israel’s favor either.

The Bible has a great deal to say about Israel and at least some of it has not happened in history yet.  That is simply a fact that some prefer to deny.

In Ezekiel 38-39, we read of an event that is called by many, the “Northern Invasion” of Israel.  The Scriptures tell us that a number of nations will come together under the leadership of someone with the title GOG and will attempt to invade Israel.  Again, GOG is not a name of a person.  It is a title, like referring to someone as Captain, General, President, or Caesar.

We know from the text of Ezekiel 38 that this leader – GOG – comes from the north of Israel.  Many commentators believe this leader will be the leader of Russia at the time of the invasion.  In essence, it doesn’t matter.  What we know is that the leader is a powerful person who leads a country north of Israel.

What is also interesting is though GOG believes that the idea to invade Israel is his idea, it’s really God’s idea.  Let’s look at the text.

Behold, I am against you, O Gog, prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal. I will turn you about and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, and all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them splendidly attired, a great company with buckler and shield, all of them wielding swords; Persia, Ethiopia and Put with them, all of them with shield and helmet; Gomer with all its troops; Beth-togarmah from the remote parts of the north with all its troops—many peoples with you,” (Ezekiel 38:3-6, NASB).

Because of history, we know the areas or nations that become involved with GOG.  Persia is modern-day Iran, Ethiopia remains Ethiopia, and Put is modern-day Libya.  Gomer is likely part of Asia Minor and Beth-togarmah is most likely the area in southern Turkey, near the border of Syria.  While many commentators believe Rosh and Meshech refer to places in Russia, it is difficult to be dogmatic here.  It may be better to place this area in parts of central and western Asia.  Tubal is also likely a place in the eastern portion of Asia Minor.  Later, we meet someone by the name of Magog, whom we know to be a descendant of Noah.

The reality here is not so much the identity of the nations or areas that attempt to invade Israel, but that do attempt to invade.  This much is clear from the text, and as mentioned, this event has not yet occurred in Israel’s history, though she has been invaded and conquered several times throughout her history.

Notice though that God – speaking through the prophet Ezekiel – says that HE is going to “put hooks into [GOG's] jaws” and it is God who turns GOG around and causes him to attack Israel. Yet in verses 10 through 12, we read the following words:

“Thus says the Lord GOD, “It will come about on that day, that thoughts will come into your mind and you will devise an evil plan, and you will say, ‘I will go up against the land of unwalled villages. I will go against those who are at rest, that live securely, all of them living without walls and having no bars or gates, to capture spoil and to seize plunder, to turn your hand against the waste places which are now inhabited, and against the people who are gathered from the nations, who have acquired cattle and goods, who live at the center of the world.”  Notice the part I have bolded.  One day, out of the blue, thoughts will come into GOG’s mind and we read that because of these thoughts GOG will devise an evil plan.

God allows the thoughts to filter into GOG’s brain.  GOG has a choice of whether or not to ignore the thoughts or go with them.  What are the thoughts?  It appears that the thoughts have to do with how GOG sees Israel and how seemingly indefensible they are, making it perfect for him to gather troops and attack.

This is why God can hold GOG (or anyone) accountable for their actions.  GOG does not have to follow his thoughts through to the end, but he chooses to do so.  The LORD chooses GOG to put these thoughts into because God knows that GOG will not resist these thoughts.  So even though GOG is held accountable for his actions against Israel, it is God who can also truthfully say that He is the one who puts hooks into GOG’s jaws, turning his attention toward Israel.

We know that September is not going to be a good month for Israel.  Anti-Semitism is at an all time high, not seen like this since the Holocaust.  President Ahmadinejad once again came out to thoroughly denounce Israel and called for their total extermination.  The idea that any leader of any nation can make these types of statements is not only ludicrous, but thoroughly evil.

According to more than one website, the Arab League is going to go before the General Assembly of the U.N. and ask that they declare the West Bank, Gaza, and all of East Jerusalem – the Old Testament city that includes the Temple Mount – to be fully Palestinian.  While this would not be binding, it will still create a problem for Israel if the General Assembly agrees with the Arab League in principle.  This will be one more strike against Israel and will cause people to become even more determined to rid the Middle East of Israel’s presence.

We also know that next month, the Palestinians will go before the Security Council of the U.N. to officially recognize a Palestinian state.  If this happens, then as at least one person has said, this will have far more implications due to the fact that the Security Council has “more teeth” than the General Assembly. [1]

If any portion of the U.N. goes with the Arab League and against Israel, we will know that things are building up momentum against Israel as never before.  It is common knowledge that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has already told Israel they must apologize to Turkey for their actions on the flotilla last year.  This is in spite of the fact that Israel was found to have done nothing wrong.

So it would appear on all fronts, forces are gathering against Israel.  I believe that this will eventually lead to the Northern Invasion of Ezekiel 38-39, in which one leader referred to as GOG will gather a number of other nations and try to pounce on Israel to take whatever GOG wants to take.

Right now we know that tremendous oil reserves have been discovered in Israel as well as natural gas supplies.  It is estimated that within two years, Israel will become completely self-sufficient and will not need to import any energy source from any other nation.  In fact, she will be in the position of being able to sell any additional reserves.

Why does GOG choose to attack Israel?  Aside from the fact that he is looking for “spoils,” we are not sure since the Bible is not specific.  The term “spoils” is merely a generic term indicating the items that soldiers take after conquering their enemy.  Depending upon the location, spoils could refer to anything.

In the end, it doesn’t matter.  I frankly believe that God sets this entire thing up so that He and He alone will come to Israel’s aid here, before they even get a chance to lift a finger to defend themselves.

Let’s again look at the text.  Here is Ezekiel 38:18-23, also from the NASB.

It will come about on that day, when Gog comes against the land of Israel,” declares the Lord GOD, “that My fury will mount up in My anger. In My zeal and in My blazing wrath I declare that on that day there will surely be a great earthquake in the land of Israel. The fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all the creeping things that creep on the earth, and all the men who are on the face of the earth will shake at My presence; the mountains also will be thrown down, the steep pathways will collapse and every wall will fall to the ground.  I will call for a sword against him on all My mountains,” declares the Lord GOD. “Every man’s sword will be against his brother.  With pestilence and with blood I will enter into judgment with him; and I will rain on him and on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, a torrential rain, with hailstones, fire and brimstone. I will magnify Myself, sanctify Myself, and make Myself known in the sight of many nations; and they will know that I am the LORD.”’

When GOG, with his troops, has the audacity to attempt an invasion against Israel, God tells us what He will do.  This is the fascinating part of the Bible.  Quite often we are told what is going to happen well before it happens.  In this way, we can use the fulfillment of those prophetic portions of Scripture to verify the Lord’s integrity.  He does not have to stoop to that level, but He does for our sakes.

Notice in the above text, God does the following, as soon as GOG steps foot on the Mountains of Israel:

  1. Great earthquake – all will notice it – it will be that powerful
  2. All men will shake at God’s presence
  3. The Mountains will be thrown down
  4. Steep pathways and walls will collapse
  5. God will confuse the soldiers so that they begin to fight each other
  6. Disease will affect the soldiers
  7. A torrential rain will occur
  8. Hailstones, with fire and brimstone

The Lord does this for one reason and one reason only:  to magnify His Name.  He does not do this for Israel’s sake, but for HIS sake.  He does it to show the nations who is in charge and that He is the Lord.

Israel will also take note.  They will begin to look up as God prepares His final Remnant for the Millennial Kingdom that will exist after the Tribulation of a period of seven years (cf. Daniel 7:27).

What is fascinating here is that at the point when Israel is nearly invaded, she will be standing alone.  No one will come to her aid.  No one will have the time to come to her aid.

I also believe the obvious results of this Northern Invasion will have an interesting affect on the world as a whole.  All nations – particularly those nations who hate Israel – will actually start to back off, at least outwardly.  They will severely tone down their rhetoric.  People like Ahmadinejad will learn that it is better to shut his mouth than continue to lambaste Israel and Jewish people.

I believe that following this event, the world will somewhat come to its senses and reduce their outward hatred of Israel.  I also believe that this is why one man will eventually come onto the scene who will be able to broker a covenant of peace with Israel and the surrounding nations.

The first thing God does to ward off GOG’s attack is to send an earthquake.  This particular earthquake is apparently so large that no one – including the birds, animals, fish, and humanity – will be able to miss it.  It will be so massive that mountains will be thrown down and steep places and walls will crumble to the ground.  I believe this includes the Dome of the Rock mosque that currently sits atop the Temple Mount.

With this eyesore out-of-the-way, people will see Israel and the Temple Mount differently.  What they do not realize is that God is going to continue to bring His plans to fruition so that He can have it out once and for all with Israel, Mano-e-mano.

With the Dome of the Rock mosque out-of-the-way, there will be nothing to stop the Jews from building their Temple on the Temple Mount.  I do not believe that anyone will try to stop them either.

I believe that after the Northern Invasion, the world will look very differently at Israel.  Unfortunately, this will allow Israel to develop a case of over-confidence and they will wind up signing a covenant with the man who waltzes onto the scene promising to bring everlasting peace to the Middle East.  They will sign on the dotted line as will other countries and in doing so, wind up kicking off the Tribulation.

It could very well be that after this coming Northern Invasion, Israel will actually be feared throughout the world.  The reason for the covenant of peace with Israel and her neighbors may have more to do with those other nations who have grown to fear Israel and now want some promises that they will be able to live in peace with Israel without fearing reprisals.

These are my educated guesses.  I am not a prophet and have never claimed to be.  My knowledge comes from the Scriptures and what I see happening in the world around us.

The Northern Invasion described by Ezekiel has not historically occurred yet.  It is still a future event.  What will it look like when it happens?  Who will be the person who leads those countries to attack Israel when it seems to be most advantageous for those countries to do so?  I don’t know the answers to these questions.  I’m not sure what shape it will take and who will be leading the invasion.

What I know is that it will happen and someone will be leading it.  I also know what the result of that attempted invasion will be.  The main result is that for a time, people will recognize some “higher power,” a power that they would prefer not to deal with after seeing what happened to GOG and his armies.

After the Northern Invasion, leaders of the world will back down and will possibly even pretend that they were friends with Israel the entire time!  They do not want to have happen to their nation what happened to GOG and the nations that joined him.

It may well be that the world will come to fear Israel and because of it, Israel will grow rather too full of herself thinking that she is untouchable.  Because of that, she will wind up entering a covenant with the devil that winds up causing a severe backlash against Israel.

Will all of this happen because of the events that will possibly occur next month, in September?  Again, I’m not sure.  I’m simply looking at the world and how it currently sees Israel, as well as how it supports the Palestinian effort to become a state (while ignoring the constant threats against Israel) and I say that there is a possibility that this Northern Invasion spoken of in Ezekiel 38-39 could happen as a direct result.

Certainly, the Northern Invasion will happen at some point.  We simply need to be aware of the times and not be taken by surprise when it does happen.  But, it is coming.
