Impatient Homosexuals and Christian Persecution

I was reading a few blogs by various conservatives and found out some interesting things.  First, “Within a few hours after the Obama administration announced last week that it would no longer defend the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in court, homosexual activists in California filed a request with the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals seeking a stay on an order barring same-gender “marriage.” The case is now before the California Supreme Court and the Ninth Circuit.” [1]

That’s interesting, isn’t it?  Look, I don’t blame homosexuals for wanting to push their agenda.  Unfortunately, I believe they are wrong based on what the Bible teaches.  They are doing what they believe they should do and I’m doing what I believe I should do.  The problem though is that IF things were reversed and Prop 8 had failed to gain enough votes in California, and those opposed to the homosexual lifestyle were now doing what homosexual activists are doing, can you imagine how we would be vilified?  Can you hear the names we would be called for daring to interject our voices in the judicial process?

Homosexual lobbyists and groups would spare no expense to cut us down as being hate mongers, right-wing extremists, and the like.  The media would join forces with these same homosexual groups to ensure that there was enough leverage and force to put down those who would dare come out against homosexual unions.

This is part of the problem we face today.  While on one hand, Christians are constantly charged with having little to no tolerance, we see some of the most condemnatory and hate-filled speech from groups who are opposed to the conservative biblical position.  While I realize that there is one well-known group that just experienced the rule of the Supreme Court in their favor, these types of groups are on the fringe of society and to my knowledge, they have no physically assaulting anyone.  The signs they wield and the words they spew are beyond the pale though.

First of all, if God has such a problem with homosexuality (as I believe He does), then it is up to HIM to do what He will do against it.  This does not mean I sit on the sidelines doing nothing, but neither does it mean I condemn homosexuals.  Second, the problem is that if I even express my opinion that homosexuality is wrong (based on my understanding of the Bible), I am in danger of being classified as a hate-mongering individual.

So the problem is at least two-fold for me.  As a conservative (and what I believe to be an authentic Christian), I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t.  But in the end, who cares?  My responsibility is to God and if I know that I am not hating homosexuals (or any other group whose lifestyle I might disagree with), then it really does not matter what others think of me or my opinion.

This led me to another blog about the potential of anti-Christian sentiment ramping up in the U.S.A. in the near future.  The blog-writer states, “A Christian attorney says the U.S. is not far behind Great Britain when it comes to the impact of what he describes as the “radical homosexual agenda.”

“A Christian couple in Great Britain has been told they can’t be foster parents because their religious beliefs prohibit teaching youngsters that the homosexual lifestyle is acceptable. The edict was handed down by London’s Royal Courts of Justice.” [2]

You’re probably familiar with that news story as well.  The reason that particular decision was handed down was because it was stated that Britain is essentially a secular nation (not something to be proud of) and so that determined the outcome. 

With the amount of things happening in the world and the United States, it is becoming clear that anti-Christian sentiment has no place to go but up.  Just as Christians were subjected to the blame game foisted upon them by Nero (as one major example in history), it is coming round again.

But why?  Why is the world so easily offended when it comes to Christians?  Why is their anger so palpable?  For a number of reasons.  Jesus told us that the world hated Him first and anyone who follows Him will also be hated (cf. Matthew 10:22).  So that’s the first and foremost reason.  The world hates Jesus, so people who follow Jesus will also be hated.

The second reason has more to do with opportunity than anything else.  Christians are known (generally) to be fairly docile and non-combative.  Christians are daily persecuted around the globe, to the point of death.  Rarely, if ever do Christians fight back.  I would like to make a distinction between being persecuted for the faith, and being at the mercy of a criminal.  In the former, I am to completely place my life in God’s hands.  In the latter, I am allowed to protect myself.

When it comes to persecution, Christians are routinely persecuted.  I would be willing to believe that many who persecute Christians (because they become angry with them or even hate them) are not even aware of why they feel such disdain for Christians.  It is clear, if history tells us anything, that Christians are often easy targets because they are known not to fight back.  If they do, they are accused of being hypocrites. 

As far as the world is concerned, the Christian is supposed to turn the other cheek and simply take whatever the world dishes out.  The Christian is supposed to live quietly, simply suffering under the burden that the world heaps on the backs of Christians.  It is because of this that many Christians are simply persecuted.  No one really believes that they will fight back.  I believe it is also this demeanor posed by Christians that causes people to have no respect for Christians.

Don’t get me wrong.  I could care less if the world respects me.  I’m more interested in attempting to discern whether or not God approves of my actions and demeanor.

Compare this to Islam.  Most people want to kowtow to Islam because they know if they do not, they will risk being injured or even killed.  They know that there are many wackos in Islam who will act on their threats.  They know that if you push many Muslims too hard, they will react and push back, often even harder.

This is why Hillary Clinton recently praised Al Jazeera a terrorist group.  This is why many people in the United States seem to cater to Islamic groups like CAIR, ACORN, FARC, and other groups.  These are the true hate groups, but because they wield power, have lots of money, and have shown that they are not above being connected to terror groups in the Middle East and elsewhere, people tend to take them seriously. 

We all know that terror groups put their bombs where their bodies are and are not afraid to use those bombs to further their own cause.  With the exception of a few individuals who though they state they are Christians, are clearly not, authentic Christians do not strap on bombs, or randomly kill people who are outside the borders of Christianity, in the name of Jehovah.

It is this mindset that is creating the perfect storm in the United States, where it will become politically correct to accuse, harass, and even persecute Christians.  Christians will be more and more seen as outsiders, hate-filled, and those who block true progress.

If you turn to Revelation 11, we are immediately introduced to two individuals who are designated to be God’s witnesses.  The identities of these two individuals is not important, otherwise God would have told us who they are going to be.  The real set of interesting points has to do with what they are able to do and why.

“And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed,” (Revelation 11:5).

You should really read that again.  Now, ask yourself a couple of questions:

  1. why do people want to hurt them?
  2. why are people trying to kill them?
  3. what are the witnesses doing that brings out the worst in people?

The answer is one in the same.  The people become exceedingly angry toward these two witnesses because of

  1. what the witnesses are preaching
  2. what the witnesses stand for, and
  3. what the witnesses are able to accomplish

Obviously, a very large percentage of the world hates these two witnesses.  For God to grant them the ability to shoot fire out of their mouths as a means of protection tells us that these individuals are preaching truth, absolute truth, and nothing but the truth.  That truth however, is not well received by individuals who are living on this earth, because this earth is now under the dominion of Satan and will continue to be during the time the witnesses are here on earth.

Truth has a way of angering people if they do not want to hear it.  No matter how true something is, if someone is dead set against it, they can easily become even violently opposed to that truth.  That is exactly what happens during the time the two witnesses are on earth for roughly 3.5 years.

It is the same thing that is beginning to happen now.  People who do not know God, do not want to hear that they do not know Him.  They are not interested in hearing that they may in fact, be harboring and living a lie.  They would prefer to think that they are right, and anyone who deigns to act as their conscience is wrong.  In fact, they begin to think of ways to shut down that conscience.  They may start out by angrily lashing out at the person.  If that doesn’t work, they may push and shove, or falsely accuse.  If it goes on long enough, it is not unusual to expect that person to physically attack the person who is simply preaching the truth to them.

Why does the Christian take the time to preach the truth?  For one simple reason:  we do not want people to leave this earth without knowing Jesus Christ as Savior, Lord, and King.  To do so means to spend eternity apart from Him, in abject torment.  This is what Jesus taught and yet fewer people alive today believe that this will actually happen.

Yesterday, I saw previews for a documentary by Lisa Ling on the subject of Christianity and the homosexual (I don’t recall the exact name of the documentary).  At one point, a homosexual stated that he “did not believe God has a problem” with his homosexuality.  So naturally then, the individual who preaches that God does have a problem with homosexuality (just as He has a problem with all sin) is seen as the enemy; the unwanted conscience.

      Yes, each individual has a responsibility to come to Jesus. Those who spend their lives refusing will be cast out of His presence in the afterlife.

    I find some parts of this article ridiculous. Why? Because christians haven’t been peaceful, nor desplayed Any christ like attributes, nor been persecuted since its early years. Hello!! The Crusades! The Spanish Inquistion! All Christian denominations stem from Catholicism, so they cant just push the blame onto the Catholic Church. The three One-God religions are to blame for the majority of violence for the past two millennium. And everyone in those religions seem to forget that all three are the same damn religion, just different varients. And christian hypocrisy is why its gonna be destroyed as an institution. They forget that the bible condons slavery, and condemns inter-racial marriage and reproduction, and yet christians are okay with letting those views and practices go. But no, they stand firm on the homosexual issues. Hypocrite!! If it was allowed that all the world followed the rules and teachings of any of the One-God religions, literally and to the T, that world would be a living hell.

      Hi Nick,

      The reason you find parts of the article ridiculous is simply because you make no distinction between authentic Christianity and Roman Catholicism.

      It is NOT the three-in-one God that has created the problem. The things that have created the problems ALL have to do with humanity’s greed and a complete misappropriation of the biblical message.

      The reality Nick, whether you can see it or not, is the fact that (authentic) Christianity is the only religion (for the lack of a better word) that insists that salvation is FREE and it is ONLY available through Jesus Christ.

      Roman Catholicism ADDS to that with works, as does EVERY other religious system – period. You will NOT find one ideology aside from authentic Christianity that offers salvation FREE.

      You also conveniently ASSUME that Christians (authentic or otherwise) are supposed to be PERFECT, when in point of fact, that is impossible. There is nothing in Scripture that tells me that as an authentic Christian, I will become perfect IN THIS LIFE.

      If you take the time to read just the third chapter of John, Jesus thoroughly explains to one of the religious leaders of His day (Nicodemus) that unless a person is born again, it will be impossible to see the Kingdom of God. When I became a Christian, the Holy Spirit began to indwell me. From that point onward, He works to change my character to become more like Jesus. Authentic Christianity is NOT following a system of rules and regulations. It is involved in an ACTIVE, REAL, WORKING relationship with Jesus Christ. No other religion (again, for the lack of a better word) claims that.

      A person can become a practicing Buddhist one day and then leave it a month later. A person can practice Zoroastrianism and then walk away from it. The people who SAY they are Christians and somehow walk away were NEVER Christians in the most authentic sense (according to Scripture).

      Look Nick, I’ve let you have your say, but the reality is that you have no real inkling of the slavery that was allowed, etc. in Scripture. When you think slavery, you think African-American slavery of the south. I suggest you do some actual studying of the history of the Roman Empire and those empires of during the Old Testament times. Enslaving yourself to someone was actually a way in which a person could pay off their debts. Morever, every seven years, those debts were forgiven whether they had been completely paid off or not.

      There is a great deal you seem not to understand, Nick. You also assume (like others) that I am ANGRY or that I HATE homosexuals. Nothing could be further from the truth. I want all people to come to the saving grace of salvation that is available through Jesus. Moreover, I view homosexuality the same way as I view prostitution, or sex outside of marriage, or stealing.

      The reason there are hypocrites in Christianity is because:
      – not all people who GO to church are actually Christians
      – authentic Christians cannot become perfect in this life

      There are plenty of people who are hypocritical simply because they SAY they are Christians, but are the furthest thing from it. If you will take the time to read the parable of the sower (Matthew 13:1-23) and the parable of the wheat and the tares (Matthew 13:24-30; 36-43), you will clearly see that Jesus KNEW ahead of time that His Church would be filled with hypocritical liars. This is a fact from prior to the church’s inception (Acts 2).

      Can you imagine Nick, if authentic Christians were actually perfect in this life? You would find tremendous fault with that as well. We aren’t perfect, so you call us hypocrites. So are you, Nick, because you’re not perfect either.

      Tell me…have you ever lied? Have you ever lusted after a woman…or a man? Have you ever stolen ANYTHING? Have you ever wished anyone dead? If you can answer yes to even ONE of those questions, then you are a lawbreaker, just like me. The difference is that I know it and have received the only salvation that is available. You have not.

      Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention Nick, that your assertion that Christianity prohibited inter-racial marriages is nonsense.
      What God prohibited was for Jews to marry people from PAGAN cultures because it was clear that Jews would begin to adopt the paganism of the wives they married. This in fact, because the case with many Jewish men, including Solomon, whom Jesus said was the wisest man who ever lived prior to Himself.

      You also wrongly assert that all Christian denominations came from Roman Catholicism. You know, that is such an absurd statement, it’s difficult to take it seriously. Though Roman Catholic scholars will disagree, it is CLEAR from history that the Roman Catholic church did NOT start until the late third century. So how is it you have decided that everything stemmed from that?

      Do you have ANY idea how far apart the Baptist are from Catholicism, as just one instance? Christianity was born in Acts 2 in the form of the Church. There are many denominations that did spring from Roman Catholicism like Lutheranism, Episcopalianism, Calvinism, etc., but they also found much to disagree with regarding the Roman Catholic Church.

      Roman Catholicism was the first denomination (if you will) that became married to the state. Because of that, politics infiltrated the church in a huge way and remains to this day.

      There are a number of denominations that broke from Roman Catholicism and some that came into being completely separate from Roman Catholicism. Your sweeping generalizations unfortunately serve only to prove what you do not know.

      I recall one individual stating to me that so much of the Bible (specifically the OLD TESTAMENT) was laughable because of all the dos and don’ts. He pointed out among one of many laws recorded by Moses that a kid (baby goat) should not be boiled in its mother’s milk. The allegeded absurdity of that command left him rolling on the floor apparently. Because he failed to research it, he did not realize (until I pointed it out to him) that the rule about not boiling a kid goat in its mother’s milk was given because this is often what certain cultures did during their worship of pagan gods.

      God was telling the Jews that they should avoid the practice because it would make them idolators. He stopped laughing. The reality is that if you will take the time to research actual history and delve into the reasons behind the laws that God issued to Israel (not to other nations), you would find that these laws that you seem to mock, have an actual reason behind them. As I’ve explained, slavery was not like African-American slavery during the early days of the U.S. It was far more nuanced than that and it actually provided protection to the individual who was enslaved, for the most part. Were there incidents of corruption and ill-treatment? Yes, because people are corrupt (even you, Nick).

      You might (or might not) be interested to know that the bankruptcy laws of the United States are patterned after the slavery laws of the OT. After seven years, debts were forgiven. The bankruptcy laws of the U.S. provide for that same relief for those who have seriously overextended themselves and have no other way out.

      There are a great deal of things you fail to understand, Nick. I’m sorry that this is the case. Instead of writing me to call me a hypocrite, maybe you should spend some time doing some solid research into the actual laws and whys and wherefores of the laws of the OT. If you could do that with an open mind, you would be surprised.

      Again, many of the laws that were given were due to the hardness of people’s hearts in the days of Moses. Unfortunately, that still exists today (the hardness of people’s hearts), yet this is the case in spite of the fact that Jesus came, lived a life of perfection, and gave His life so that you and I could receive the only salvation that is truly available. You refuse, mainly because you lack the understanding.

      I grant you this: If people could live as Jesus lived, the world would be a wonderful place. But please do not think that it means no rules,l and no laws. Jesus UPHELD the law at every point. He pointed out the sin of people and He pointedly told them to sin no more. Have you stopped sinning yet, Nick?
