Jesus Explains End Times Protocol, Pt 9

In part 8 of this series, we went into a very brief history of the rise of the nation of Israel officially, in 1948. We spoke also about the Six Day War from 1967 and what occurred during that period of time, providing Israel with full control of both West and East Jerusalem, at least on paper. Though Israel has authority over the Temple Mount, it was left in the hands of Arabs and there have been continued problems since then because of the Arabs’ refusal to acknowledge that Israel owns/controls the Temple Mount.

We ended our last article with an introduction to Daniel 9:25-26 and put forth the opinion that the 490 years officially began with the decree from Artaxerxes in 445 BC, during which time Nehemiah was given permission and resources to rebuild Jerusalem’s wall. From that point onward, the 490 year time clock began ticking.

It is reasonable to conclude that if the time clock of 490 years began at the 445 BC point, then surely, it would have ended quite some time ago, since 490 years has come and gone easily since then. That would be the case if all the “weeks” within the 490 years ran concurrently, without a break.

To determine whether or not a break or gap in this part of God’s timetable exists, all we need to do is look at the text carefully. We will do that now. Here again is Daniel 9:25-27.

25 “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. 26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”

We dealt with verse 25 last time and even touched on part of verse 26. But let’s pick it up with verse 26. It says clearly that AFTER the sixty-two sevens, several things will happen. Compare this with verse 25 in which we are told that the seven “weeks” (“sevens”) and the sixty-two “weeks” (“sevens”) run one right after the other without stopping. The entire period totalling 483 years runs concurrently without let up. No stopping. No break or gap. Once the clock started in 445 BC, it continued until we get to the end of the second set of “weeks” (the sixty-two weeks or 434 years).

seventy_sevens_chartOnce the second set of weeks has been completed, Gabriel says “After the sixty-two ‘sevens’,” which tells us something or at least should tell us something. Gabriel is getting ready to tell Daniel that several things will occur immediately following the conclusion of the sixty-two weeks (434 years). What are those things?

Gabriel says that five things will take place right after the conclusions of the sixty-two weeks:

  1. the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing
  2. the people of the ruler who will come will destroy Jerusalem and the Temple
  3. the end will come like a flood
  4. war will continue to the end
  5. desolations have been decreed

These five things occur during the interim, between the sixty-two weeks and the start of the final “seven” (noted in verse 27). Note the above chart. The first set of seven “sevens” (49 years) takes us up to the end of the Old Testament. The second set of sixty-two “sevens” (434 years) places us during the silent time between the testaments and up to the time of Jesus’ Triumphal entry into Jerusalem when people shouted “Hosanna!” and laid palm branches before Him. That event ended the sixty-two weeks.

Because of that, a total of 483 years had passed. This takes us up to the end of Daniel 9:25. With verse 26, Gabriel clearly states, “after the sixty-two ‘sevens’,” and then goes onto point out the five things noted above that would occur AFTER the end of the sixty-two weeks and BEFORE the start of the final “seven” (seven years), noted in verse 27.

Notice that verse 27 starts with “He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven’.” That, my friend, is the FINAL week of seven years that we are now waiting for to occur. How do we know this? Because there is no Antichrist yet that we know of with certainty and he has not made any sort of covenant with the nation of Israel (“many”).

daniel_cover_small1The sixty-two weeks came to an end in AD 33 with the Triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Five things are supposed to occur during that time and the start of the final week. In essence then, we are living DURING the time between these weeks. I have explained it in even greater detail in my book “Between Weeks,” which can either be purchased or downloaded as a PDF (free of charge). The whole of this book explains the weeks and the fact that we are living in a time AFTER the closing of the sixty-two weeks and BEFORE the start of the final week.

Before we look at the five things listed above, people usually want to know WHEN this last week will start. It is impossible to provide a date and I would not even try to make a guess about it. What we do know is that when a person rises up who is able to broker some sort of peace deal between Israel and the surrounding Arab nations successfully, this man will be the Antichrist. When Israel agrees to the covenant, that is when the Tribulation begins.

The five things that Gabriel points out to Daniel is first, the Anointed One will be “cut off” or be killed. He will die with nothing. He will be deserted and not even have a grave to call His own, but one that was provided for Him.

The second thing that happens is that the people of the ruler who is to come will sack Jerusalem and the “Sanctuary” (a reference to the Jewish Temple). This took place in AD 70, some 40 years after Jesus (the Anointed One) died, rose again, and ascended.

Who were those people who did the physical damage? The Roman armies, or Gentiles. The fact that Gabriel links these people – Gentiles – with the coming ruler (Antichrist) is clear. Gabriel is saying to Daniel that the Antichrist, who will eventually rise to rule the world as the last emperor of the fourth empire (Roman), will be of Gentile stock as the Roman armies were when they surrounded Jerusalem and destroyed the city and Temple. It is the prince/ruler of those people who will eventually come into this world and rule over it.

When Gabriel says “the end will come like a flood,” he is referring to a military campaign here. Because there is no body of water in view, the meaning is understood to reference a military campaign, when armies will – like a flood – surround Jerusalem and destroy the city. This is exactly what took place in AD 70. The city of Jerusalem was completely surrounded by soldiers. It was a “flood” of soldiers essentially, leaving destruction in their wake like a tsunami.

Notice the fourth and fifth points. Wars will continue to the end and desolations are determined or decreed. This simply means that until Jesus returns (the end of this age), the world will never be at peace. More specifically, the situation in the Middle East and with Israel will always experience the threat of war. Factions will fight against one another. It will always feel as if something is going to blow. The phrase “desolations have been decreed” makes note of the fact that the Temple Mount, probably the holiest place on earth will be desolated also until Jesus returns. As long as the mosques are standing, as long as Israel attempts to please God with the old sacrificial system instead of placing faith in God the Son as the perfect and final propitiation for sin, desolations on the Temple Mount will continue until Jesus returns to clean it up.

Once Jesus returns, judgment of the Sheep and the Goats will occur (Matthew 25:31-46).
