False Teachers and Prophets, Part 1

It is extremely important for Christians to use discernment and wisdom. That happens when we are well-versed in the Scriptures and have drawn and remain close to the Lord. It is the best defense against all false teachers and prophets.

Stories, Stories, and More Stories…

Folks, as time progresses and we move closer to the time of Jesus’ return, we must remember that He warned us about the false Christs, the false teachers who would lead many astray (Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21). Things would be gearing up to see more and more heretics gaining prominence within Christendom. Because of the way people chase after their “felt needs” today, they are tossed about by every wind of doctrine trying to satiate their itching ears.

Prophets and Dreamers from Deuteronomy

So we learn that there are two categories of false prophets/dreamers. The first in Deuteronomy 13 is the one whose prophesies come to pass but his intent is to drag people away from the living God to error by worshiping other false gods. The second in Deuteronomy 18 speaks of the false prophet who prophesies falsely – what he declares simply does not come to pass. In both cases, we are to avoid that person. We should “mark” them in our minds – make a strong mental note about them – and warn others as well. If we warn others and they do not heed our warning, it is on them.

Something Insidious This Way Grows…

Jesus warns His followers to watch out for false prophets. He was speaking of those who deliberately teach falsely. What is their purpose in being false? These false prophets do what they do for their own selfish gain (2 Peter 2; Acts 20). The Bible treats false prophets and teachers as a reality that will always be with us until the physical return of our Lord and we need to be aware of how they work.

False Prophets and Teachers are Nothing New

Society in Ezekiel’s day as well as Paul’s day was filled with spiritual con artists. It is the same with our society today. Like those of old, today’s false prophet/teacher has no fear regarding what they say because they either honestly believe that they are right (being deceived themselves), or they don’t consider that God sees and hears all things. Though His condemnation of their lies is clear, because His judgment is put off for now, they believe it will never come.

Today’s Prophet Who Comes with Signs and Wonders

The question all listeners should ask when hearing from someone claiming to be a “voice” of God is what is his/her message? Does that message align with what God teaches? Even if their message comes with signs and wonders that appear to be spiritual, but the message itself opposes God’s truth, it must be shunned. In fact, Moses went so far to say that a person who speaks in such a way, even with the presentation of signs/wonders, should be killed.

Plethora of False Teachers Pointing the Way

Please notice the emphasis is on equipping true Christians for the task of works of service in order that we might build one another up as we become mature in Him (an ongoing process until we get to heaven). We are not to be taught the truth of God’s Word so that we can marvel about how much we think we understand. Nor are we to learn from qualified teachers so that we can run around like chickens without our heads worrying about the sky possibly falling. We are to be equipped for the purpose of service, which builds up the Body of Christ (the invisible, true Church).

Watch Out for Those Who Teach God Speaks to Them, Pt 3

Numerous passages in Scripture teach us that the Holy Spirit indwells true believers (Romans 8:4, Ephesians 1:13b-14). There are a lot of people running around today who call themselves Christians, but unless they are authentic or true believers, the Holy Spirit does not indwell them. If the Holy Spirit indwells us, then we should assume that He exercises His power in and through us as well. His job is to recreate the image of Christ within us (which will not be completed until the day we step through the door of death into eternity). In John 5:17, Jesus asserted the truth that says He and His Father are always working even to the present day. That means that God has things to do and regarding the Church – His Bride – the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (or Him). This means that in spite of Satan’s best efforts – which includes getting Christians to live in unbelief – God will get the job done!

Watch Out for Those Who Teach God Speaks to Them, Pt 2

Every time I read of a prophet (or apostle) or even just an average person in Scripture seeing the Incarnate Christ in His splendor, that individual falls over as though dead! There are a few examples in the Bible where Jesus appears in pre-incarnate visage where His deity is essentially clothed or hidden from view so that He mainly looks like another man and those individuals (like Abraham) don’t pass out or go into a coma.
