What Does John Mean by Knowing God in 1 John, Part 4

Joy in fellowship cannot exist unless several things happen. First, error about Jesus must be excluded. This is why John tackles the Docetic error right off the bat by putting forth the fact that Jesus was alive and well and walked among people as a Person Himself. He was not a ghost, a phantom, or a theophany. He was a real human being who suffered in His humanity to perfect us via the atonement. Moreover, if we stop to consider it, Jesus was tempted in all ways as we are during His earthly life (Hebrews 4:15), yet remained sinless. He was fully human and experienced hunger, fatigue, and many other aspects of being human. Yet, in spite of all these things, He remained sinless and was, at the end, able to offer Himself as a perfect sacrifice for our sins, and did so.

Jesus as Creator

The problem with trying to understand Jesus as God has to do with the fact that He was also a Man. There was a duality within Jesus that no other man has ever or will ever experience.

Jesus was fully God and after incarnating as Man, was also fully Man. He is the GodMan. Because of that, confusion arises as to the reality of Jesus.

We see passages of Scripture like that of John 5:30 which states, “I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” This makes us think, “See? Jesus really doesn’t have the power in and of Himself. He can’t be God.” This is a misnomer because at times like these, Jesus was simply responding to life’s circumstances as a Man would do.

Only God Can Forgive Judicially

In Matthew 9, we see other examples of Jesus proving once and for all that He was/is God. The chapter begins with the example of a young man who has become paralytic.

It’s interesting that Jesus doesn’t simply heal the man, but takes the time to forgive the man’s sins. He normally does not do this when healing people, at least as far as we know since in all the biblical record, we do not see this happening much.

Yet, with this man, Jesus forgave the young man first saying, “Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven.” Do you recall the time Jesus healed another paralytic and the disciples asked who sinned, the man or his parents? Jesus responded with neither. He meant that neither party sinned, which directly caused the man’s paralysis.

Deity of Jesus

Many religions, in fact, all except orthodox Christianity, view Jesus as either a good man or a messenger of God, but not the God. This is the foundational principle of Christianity, at least one of them.

That Jesus was and remains God is not at all difficult to ascertain and prove from Scripture. Yet, many will view this same Bible and assert that Jesus was not God. What they fail to realize is that Jesus had a dual character. He was fully Man and at the same time was fully God. He incarnated into humanity through the virgin Mary. This does not mitigate His deity. It simply clothed or hid it with His human shell.

Jesus Christ IS God…

He’s NOT a swear word!

My wife and I were returning home from a trip and passed a semi with the message “Jesus Christ is Lord. Not a swear word” on the side of the trailer in huge lettering.
