Esther: God’s Sovereignty

The book of Esther provides information on how godly Mordecai helped Esther become the new queen of Persia. It’s a fascinating read and one might wonder, why did Mordecai push Esther into that? Again, the reason becomes clear later on, that Mordecai himself may not have even seen. Initially it appears that Mordecai was simply looking out for a better way of life for Esther. Mordecai had taken Esther in during Nebuchadnezzar’s siege of Jerusalem and during the time her parents had died. Obviously, Mordecai wanted the best for Esther so he gently prodded her to apply herself to becoming the new queen. There were clearly many women who also tried to attain this goal, but for “some” reason, King Ahasuerus was smitten with Esther, whom the Scriptures describe as having a “…beautiful figure and was lovely to look at” (v. 7b)

God’s Sovereignty and It’s Impact on the World

Had this problem remained simply between Mordecai and Haman, God may not have stepped into resolve anything, but Haman not only wanted to kill Mordecai (by hanging him on a gallows built specifically for him, standing roughly 75 feet high), but Haman extended this to include the entire culture of Jewish individuals as we learn in chapter 3. Certainly, God would not stand for that and He didn’t. It doesn’t matter whether it was Pharaoh during Moses’ day, Hitler during ours, or Haman during the time of King Ahasuerus. Anyone who wants to act as Satan and destroy all of the Jewish race will have to answer to God Himself.

Examples of Fearing God, Not Man

We arrive to the part of the story where Esther tells Mordecai that she will go and talk to the king. She did not know if she would live or die by doing so, but she knew what she must do, regardless of the danger to her own life of going to the king without invitation. Anyone who approached him without his consent could die. If he did not invite them into his throne room, that person would be executed, even the queen.
