Obama Signs Jerusalem Embassy Act
Recently – on June 3rd – Mr. Obama once again overstepped his bounds and signed a document that is sure to do a number of things:
- Invite God’s wrath
- Anger Netanyahu and other Israelis
- Cause celebrations throughout the Arab world
Last week, Jack Kelley from the organization, Gracethroughfaith.com, pointed out what he believes to be far more than simple coincidental natural disasters that have taken place throughout the world, but mainly either on American soil, or close to it. As far back as 1991, strange weather occurrences happened in various parts of the United States and they seemed to coincide with a number of policy events from our Federal government. From earthquakes, to hurricanes, to tornadoes, the United States has been inundated with severe weather events that have created havoc on our shores.
Have we learned anything? Has our Federal government taken notice and put two and two together? Apparently not.
On June 3rd, Mr. Obama did what his predecessors did and signed the Jerusalem-Embassy Act which essentially states that the United States will not move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. This is really nothing new because past presidents have done the same thing. However, it also continues to implication that, under the guise of national security, we do not recognize Jerusalem as the capitol of Israel. In fact, it is quite obvious from all of our nation’s leaders with Israel’s leaders that we want Israel to at the very least, divide up Jerusalem and give East Jerusalem (the part of the city that King David adopted as his capitol) to the Arabs.
However, what does signing this document really mean? Ultimately, it means that the United States does not recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capitol. Because Mr. Obama has continued to do what his predecessors did, and because of Mr. Obama’s genuine support for Islam, this action of our current president may have much more impact throughout the world than other presidents before him.
Consider the fact that by signing this document, Mr. Obama, though citing national security as his reason for signing it, is simply living up to his expectations and desires with respect to the Israeli-Arab conflict.
Consider what might happen in this country if we actually had a president who gave the order to move the embassy in Israel to Jerusalem? Can you imagine it? Not only would we be telling the world “Jerusalem is Israel’s capitol!” but there is an excellent chance that God would begin not only pulling back on His acts of judgment toward the United States, but in all likelihood might very well begin blessing this country once again! We did not get where we are overnight. We got here through decades of leaders who have taken Satan’s path where Israel is concerned. However, with the right leader, God could reverse all of this country’s misfortunes, if we would simply recognize His goals and purposes in the Middle East.
I realize that with a quick signature on a piece of paper, Mr. Obama is simply replicating what other presidents have done. No news there. The truth of the matter is that this continued ignorance with respect to Jerusalem as Israel’s capitol is something that I do not believe God will continue to overlook, if He in fact, has done that at all.
But why are the leaders of this country continuing to treat Israel as if they do not belong there in the Middle East? What is gained? I firmly believe that our leaders, along with many rich and powerful Jews in this country do not want a protracted peace process. I believe because they do not live there, they do not experience the day-to-day shelling that has continued for the past five or six decades since Israel became a nation, and in essence, the Jews who live here are comfortably ignorant to what actually goes on in the Middle East and because of it, they want it out of the news.
How best to get this whole thing out of the news? By having peace, any way they can get it. If we see what’s been happening, the Middle East has been in and out of the news since the Carter days, and really long before that. However, there was a vast difference then vs. now because while there was certainly turmoil in the Middle East, it did not seem to be a daily occurrence, or at least it was not necessarily reported in the liberal media as often as it is now.
It seems impossible to turn on the news, or open a newspaper without reading or hearing something about the problems and lack of peace in the Middle East. It has literally dominated the news for some time and will continue to do so for some time yet. It really shows no sign of abatement.
I also believe that many Jews in this country who want peace to be achieved in the Middle East are pushing for it because they do not want to see another holocaust. Let’s face it, everywhere you turn today, Antisemitism in one form or another is becoming more and more the norm. This is throughout the world and because of it, many Jews are likely very nervous about the real possibility of a severe backlash against Jewish people. It’s already happening in various areas of Europe and has been for some time.
It has always intrigued me that there are so many powerful Jewish people in this country (and in the world) who do not support Israel, but instead support Arabs. Even among the average Jewish person, there seems to be little concern for the events that take place thousands of miles away. I was speaking with one Jewish woman the other day who seems to really care less about the entire Middle East and any alleged peace process. I care more about Israel than she does and she’s Jewish!
This used to be a source of real frustration to me because either the rich and powerful Jewish person seemed to side with Arabs, or the average Jewish person seemed not to care at all. The problem of course is that these types of Jewish people are not religious, but secular. In fact, many Jews who currently live in Israel are secular, however, because they actually live there, the realities of the situation affects them on a daily basis and because of that, they are forced to face the problems and make choices.
What is happening in the Middle East is clearly what has been stated in Scripture. We previously spent some time going over aspects of Ezekiel 36 – 39 to show that God is working in and through the happenings in the Middle East. People have come up with all sorts of reasons why today’s Israel should not exist, or why the Jewish people of Israel are the ones who are stalling the peace process. But the fact remains that God Himself throughout the four chapters of Ezekiel mentioned has clearly stated that what He does there He does for the sake of His holy Name and for no other reason. He even quite clearly states that He does not do it for the people of Israel, but for His Name.
Yet, people take those words and somehow apply them to the Church, as if God said one thing and meant another. It actually amazes me (though it should not) that there are so many people today who believe that what is unfolding in the Middle East is accidental, or merely a happenstance that is predicated upon the belief that Israel should not be there at all, but by some freak of nature, Jews managed to overcome the odds that allowed the nation of Israel to live once again! That does not even make sense, yet these are people who call themselves Christians, making those determinations.
If what they believe about the Middle East situation is true (which I do not for a moment believe that it is), what are they actually saying about God? They obviously do not realize it, but they are denigrating God by implying that He has no control over what is happening in the Middle East. They imply that Israel has forced itself on the world and God was obviously unable to do anything about it. Would God have allowed Jewish people to become a nation again if He was not somehow in it?
One can only surmise that these folks have no clear or accurate understanding of how God works in the world. Do they open His Word? Moreover, they seem unable to appreciate the fact that everything God does is done for the sake of His holy Name.
Consider Ezekiel 20. The entire chapter bemoans the fact of Israel’s idolatry. In this chapter, the elders of Israel come to Ezekiel and sit before him. While there, the word of the Lord comes to Ezekiel and God tells him to explain the problem to the elders. They didn’t get it, just like many people today do not “get it.” God has to explain it in no uncertain terms and there is still the chance that they will not become enlightened because of it.
In fact, in Ezekiel 20:3, God literally states that He will not be asked anything by those particular elders. He is not happy and He lets them know it. The elders of Israel come to Him and want to know what’s going on? Why has God hidden His face? Why have terrible things happened? Where is God? God’s answer is basically, “I’m here – where have YOU been?! Why have you strayed so far from me and done whatever seemed good to you and expected Me to bless it?”
God then offers a list of problems that have made Him turn His face away from Israel. God points out the specifics of the problem and the fact that in spite of Israel’s error, God always brought them back to Him. Why did He do that? Verse 22 tells us: “But I withdrew My hand and acted for the sake of My name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out.” This is why He originally cast them away each time and it is the for the same reason – His holy Name – that He brought them back each time as well. He then reiterates that He will not be inquired of by those elders. Their minds are really elsewhere. They want to live the way the nations around them live and they still want God’s blessing.
This past Sunday in church, we had a guest speaker and he spoke on the subject of revival. This seems to be a favorite subject of guest speakers. It’s almost as if when they’re not sure about what to speak on, revival is always a great fallback. The problem is that the authentic or invisible Church does not need revival, in my opinion. Many within the Church simply need to turn around, stop doing what they’ve been doing, and learn to follow God more completely and more closely.
You see, many today want the emotions that often come with a revival. My daughter said it best after the service that it seemed as though the speaker was pushing everyone toward a mountaintop experience. But people cannot stay on the mountaintop forever. Emotions change and once they start to wane, so does the commitment to the Lord that came through that emotion. Emotions can be terribly deceiving.
The speaker essentially stated that we need more of God. No, I disagree and I say that as respectfully as I can. We do not need more of God. God needs more of me and you. Once He sees that we are serious in our desire to serve Him, to live for Him, and to glorify Him in all that we think, do, and say, He will then provide the strength necessary to live that life that He desires we live and by the way, that life glorifies Him. It truly brings glory and honor to His Name. Do you see? All things will bring Him glory, for the sake of His holy Name and for no other reason.
Just like the elders of Israel in Ezekiel 20, too many people today want God to bless what they want to do in this life. They want to feel great about their decisions to live life rubbing elbows with the world and even participating in what they’re doing from time to time. This is what the elders of Israel were so confused about; why wouldn’t God bless them? Why was He withholding His love and care for them?
The reality is that Christians need to step up to the plate in droves in their support for Israel. We should do this not because the people of Israel are a great bunch of people (they may or may not be, but because they are not believers in Jesus, that puts them at odds with God at the start, which tells us that what God is doing in Israel is purely for the sake of His holy Name, and not for the Jewish people), but because we should support what God is doing in the Middle East.
In Ezekiel 20:33-35, God says something that I absolutely love. It is enthralling to me because it proves to me that in spite of our need for chastisement, God does what He does because of who He is and because of His love for righteousness. In the verses below, God is speaking about Israel, which is why He uses the term “wrath.” God chastises those in Christ’s Body out of His love for us. His wrath is expended on people who do not know Him and are not part of His family of believers. This is exactly why He can pour out His wrath on the people of Israel because as of today, they – as a nation – do not know Him…yet.
“’As I live,’ declares the Lord GOD, ‘surely with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm and with wrath poured out, I shall be king over you. I will bring you out from the peoples and gather you from the lands where you are scattered, with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm and with wrath poured out; and I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and there I will enter into judgment with you face to face’.”
When I read those verses above, I am speechless because of God’s power and might. An “outstretched arm” is the picture of the captain of the troops holding up his arm just prior to going into battle. All eyes are on that arm, waiting for the signal to begin the assault.
God’s arm is currently outstretched toward Israel and please notice, that it is outstretched with wrath poured out. We hear repeatedly that those who are in Christ will not suffer God’s wrath (cf. 1 Thessalonians 5:9), yet here the word used signifies thorough and abject anger toward the subject. That doesn’t even do it justice though because for many today, the word “anger” has lost significance. God does not become angry with His true children. He grieves when we make mistakes. At times, He sees the need to chastise us, in order to correct us, but His anger is always seen as wrath in the Bible and never is it directed toward those within God’s family of believers. Those who leave this life without having gained eternal salvation will experience an eternity of His wrath, or unquenchable, eternal anger.
What God is saying in the above-quoted passage is that He will expend some amount of anger (not eternal anger) for a time onto the nation of Israel because of the way they have treated Him (and continue to treat Him today), and please notice that He also states “I will be king over you.” This is not an aside. It is a threat as well as a promise. In other words, whether the nation of Israel likes it or not, God will be their King. Initially, they will not like it, but there will be those who will succumb to His Lordship and Kingship and they will do so willingly once they have learned what God needs them to learn. Those who submit will be the Remnant of Israel (through salvation in Jesus) and that Remnant will become the nation of Israel that goes into the Millennial Kingdom under the reign of Jesus.
What this country needs is a leader who wants more than anything to see God’s will done in the Middle East. Unfortunately, for decades now, we have had leaders – both Republican and Democrat – who have had no interest in God’s will in the Middle East or any other place. They are only concerned about their will and God will continue to override it.
I agree with Jack Kelley. I believe that God has been sending warnings one after the other regarding this nation’s position where Israel is concerned. We have been standing against Israel and I also believe that the only reason God has not done more damage to our country is solely due to the amount of people who support and pray for Israel daily.
If God chooses to hear us, we may yet gain a president in 2012 who is interested in supporting Israel and may even make the truly bold step of moving the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. Frankly, I could care less if doing so would cause Arabs to become more irate because I’m more concerned about God’s approval. May He bless us with a leader in 2012 who supports what God is doing in the Middle East.
