You Get to Keep Your Own Doctor…

No, not really. In fact, though the government has gotten what it wants in the form of socialized medicine, the “facts” that were presented to us before Obamacare became the law of the land, seem to have gone down the drain.
In reality, here is what people have going for them. If you do not have any healthcare coverage, you will soon be either forced to buy it or you will be taxed for not having it. That is the ugly reality; that the Federal government is now in the position of forcing people to buy health insurance. This is not like buying auto insurance because only people who drive are required to buy it. If you don’t have a car and you don’t drive a car that you don’t own, then you are not required by law to purchase auto insurance.
What about the promise that you would be able to keep your own doctor? Unfortunately, it appears to have been a complete fabrication. Here’s why. It is doubtful that the Obama administration or Congress for that matter could not look into the future before Obamacare became law to see that companies would do everything they could to not have to buy healthcare insurance for their workers.
In fact, since the re-election of Mr. Obama, more and more companies have done whatever they have to do to remain solvent. Unfortunately, some have had to lay off hundreds or even thousands of employees. Other companies have simply been forced to shut their doors because of the tremendous expenses related to the implementation of Obamacare. This of course, simply adds to the woes of our economy, with more people out of work, more going on unemployment and then – if necessary – Welfare if they qualify.
Wal-Mart, one of the largest employers in the United States has just announced that they will no longer be offering health insurance to new hires who work less than 30 hours per week. That number is the cut off number for employers. If they have employees working less than 30 hours per week, they do not have to provide insurance for them. What this means is that those employees will be forced to either buy insurance or pay the tax.
In either case, those employees who may have had some type of health care prior will be required to get something new. They will also not be able to keep their own doctors that they may have had before.
I think we will probably see this played out repeatedly in the coming year or two. Companies will stop offering work-related health care, leaving the employee to buy their own or pay the tax. In either case, they will need to change doctors and dentists from what they had before.
By the way, I do not lay the blame for this all at the feet of the Obama administration. I ultimately blame Congress for passing something as asinine as Obamacare in the first place. For a country this size to believe that socialized medicine can or will work is patently ridiculous. Canada’s health care system is not like the one being foisted upon us here in the U.S. One large difference is that greater taxes in Canada provide health care for all citizens.
Here in the U.S., paying a tax related to Obamacare only means a person pays a tax and gets nothing in return for it. Paying the tax here simply means that a person is opt for the “privilege” of not having health care. Since the government is not really in the health care business, the person must pay the tax or purchase a health care insurance that the government has approved.
Of course, not one person in Congress (or the president himself) will choose to buy their own health care. They have the Rolls Royce of polices because they are high-end government workers, paid for by taxpayers.
There are a number of other things that are changing and have changed recently that will affect college students. The Pell Grant has been cut by Mr. Obama to the tune of roughly 35%. As I’ve said before, this is going to make it more difficult for people to receive the kind of assistance they were hoping to have in response to the rising costs associated with college tuition.
Of course, let’s not forget that some economists have indicated that there are roughly 20 new taxes that will begin to kick in for the Middle Class in 2013. This appears to be just the beginning.
We also have the fiscal cliff that everyone tells us is heading our way. I say let’s just go over the cliff and let the chips fall where they may. There is a great deal of posturing in Washington, DC and unfortunately, it is very difficult to take Mr. Obama seriously since he is in Hawaii on vacation and will remain there when a vote is taken on what do to about this looming fiscal crisis.
Another difficulty that is coming our way is related to 401(k) and IRA retirement accounts. The government wants the money that is in there and there are billions and billions available. The government wants to force those with retirement accounts to give them the right to use that money in exchange for bonds. This is so ridiculous, it is simply pitiful. Anyone who has their retirement in IRAs or 401(k) accounts may wish to cash it out and put it somewhere else where the government can’t get to it. Before that step is taken, talk seriously with your money manager or accountant.
It is a proven fact that once the government gets involved in anything, money starts bleeding out like an oil gusher. It might be better (depending upon your situation) to cash out, pay the taxes and fines and have absolute control over what remains. I know that’s difficult because it’s usually a sizable amount of money associated with cashing out a retirement account. However, if you consider the fact that had you received that money as salary over the years, taxes would have been taken out anyway.
We just looked at our accounts and they are already losing money because of what is coming and the uncertainty of the markets. Our money manager does the best he can but he cannot see the future to determine which stocks are going to be and which are going to be down.
We are entering a new phase here in America. It is uncharted waters for many of us. It’s time for prudence, wisdom, and a whole of discernment that only comes through prayer.
Sound depressing? It can be if you walk into the coming situations with your eyes closed. It will also be depressing if you are not in relationship with God through Jesus Christ. He is the One who provides the discernment we need for times like this.
Psalm 5:11-12 says this:
But let all who take refuge in You be glad,
Let them ever sing for joy;
And may You shelter them,
That those who love Your name may exult in You.
12 For it is You who blesses the righteous man, O Lord,
You surround him with favor as with a shield.
The truth is that those who know God in Christ, are free to take refuge in Him. God promises to shelter us, not necessarily from life’s storms, but from the devastating effects of many of these storms. I love the last line: You surround him with favor as with a shield.
Does it really matter what our government plans to do? There are so many cases throughout the Bible where evil was outsmarted by God through people who knew Him and depended upon Him.
As Christians, now is the time especially to draw close to Him and learn to trust Him completely for His beneficence. He is God. He has promised in Romans 8 to never leave us and to never condemn us. He knows our frame. He knows are weaknesses. He also knows the future. The government knows none of that and could not care one iota about us. We cannot depend upon our government to do what is right. It will only do what is in its best interests and that normally means taking from us to reward itself.
God not only cares for His own, but will do whatever it takes to protect us. Does this mean we will avoid every problem in life? Not at all. It does mean that when each problem arrives, God will provide a solution that is best for us and brings Him glory.
There is no safer place to be than under the shelter of the Most High’s wings. He truly cares for us. Lean on Him for strength, for wisdom, for discernment and decide ahead of time that you only want Him to do what is best for you and your family so that He will be glorified because of it.
With that attitude, we cannot go wrong.
