This chart outlines the birth pangs, which we will deal with individually

Previously, we discussed aspects of Daniel 9 to show how the term “70 weeks” essentially equals 490 years. This is important to grasp because not only did God declare a sure time frame for those years, but He also decreed why they would occur. We listed six things that God said would be the outcome of these 490 years during which time both the Jews and Jerusalem would be controlled by Gentiles.

If we consider the Temple Mount today, there are some very interesting facts connected with that situation. Let me address them before we move onto the final verses of Daniel 9. As we have noted previously, when Jesus used the phrase “nation rising against nation, kingdom against kingdom,” He was teaching that one of the birth pangs would be world war. The first actual world war was WWI beginning in 1914, which ultimately gave birth to Zionism. WWII began in 1939 and due to the Holocaust, Jewish people realized that unless they had their own nation, they would not truly be safe from the “Hitlers” of the world. Because of that, the nation of Israel rose from the dead. This is direct fulfillment of the Valley of Dry Bones in Ezekiel 37. Maybe we’ll touch on this more later either in this series or in another. Suffice it to say that when the nation of Israel was resurrected in 1948, God was behind it. It was not a freak action of nature, coincidence, or happenstance. It was part of God’s plan. Even a dead language – Hebrew – came back to life.

But in 1948, Israel only had a control of a very small section of Israel, far less than what the original nation controlled. In spite of being surrounded by Arab nations in 1948 (and now), Israel managed to live again and still lives today. That is not due to luck. It is only due to God, period. Those who stand against Israel stand against the Lord Himself. Not a good position to be in.

It was not until the Six Day War in 1967 that more land was added to the nation of Israel. Egypt, along with others, chose to attack Israel on the Sabbath, a cheap shot to be sure, but all is fair in love and war. Because Israeli soldiers could not fight back, her enemies gained quite a foothold. However, within a few weeks to a month, Israel regained ground lost and also gained more, taking the Golan Heights, the West Bank (including Gaza) and more. By the way, I believe it is fully disingenuous for Israel’s enemies to demand that Israel “return” the additional land gained during the Six Day War. Israel was attacked without provocation. Her enemies lost and they’ve been whining ever since about “stolen land.”

But there is something else that Israel gained during that war that she had not had control of since the Old Testament times. She gained control of East Jerusalem, including the Temple Mount. This was one of the outcomes of the Six Day War when Moshe Dayan led his troops into the old portion of Jerusalem and after a lengthy fire fight, took that part of the city. Since 1948, Israel only had control of West Jerusalem, the modern part of the city.

But even though Israel gained East Jerusalem and the Temple Mount, the leaders of Israel allowed East Jerusalem and the Temple Mount to remain in the hands of Arabs. However, on paper, Israel had authority over those areas and still does today. In essence then, Jerusalem became united under Jewish control on paper. The problems with the Temple Mount today exist because Israel never took physical control of East Jerusalem or the Temple Mount. Had they done so, they would likely have removed the mosques there and replaced them with a rebuilt Temple. But these things are in God’s hands. Please note the chart at the top of this article and specifically the third birth pang from the left.

In fact, note that the first three birth pangs, going from left to right, have all been fulfilled today. They are in our past. We await the remaining birth pangs to occur, which will take us up to and into the Tribulation. God’s timetable is His as our His plans. Satan does God’s bidding, whether he thinks he does or not.

One day, a rebuilt Jewish Temple will stand on the Temple Mount. I have no idea how that will happen, but it could be connected to the Gog/Magog War of Ezekiel 38-39. That could easily be another series. Suffice it to say that when Gog (the leader of the northern alliance) sets his sights on Israel, the Lord steps in and destroys him along with his armies. God uses a number of things to do that including a very, very large earthquake, which will likely level at least some of Jerusalem. It may well be that this earthquake will completely destroy both the Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa mosques. With those mosques out of the way, Israel can then build the Tribulation Temple.

Will it happen this way? I cannot say for sure, but it is a possibility. Who is Gog of Magog? I also cannot say with absolute certainty, but he may well be the leader who comes from the area of the world we currently know as Russia. It’s possible because of the fact that Russia is due north of Israel. We will know when it happens.

But let’s go back to Daniel 9:25-27 and begin to unpack the meaning of the last few verses, we will also have a better idea of the order of events that will lead us right up to the Tribulation.

25 “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. 26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”

We have space to look at verse 25 before ending this article. We’ll cover the rest in the next article. Gabriel just told Daniel that the length of time that will hold Jews and Jerusalem captive to Gentile powers is 490 years in total (v. 24).

Gabriel begins verse 25 with a declarative statement: “Know and understand this.” Gabriel is saying that what he is about to say next is extremely important and Daniel needs to grasp the full portent of it.

seventy_sevens_chartGabriel is providing Daniel with the starting point of the 490 years. He says, “From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.” The key phrase is “from the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem…”

We need to ask when that was in history. As you can see on the above chart I’ve created, there were four decrees made by rulers to restore and rebuild Jerusalem (or parts of it).

The most likely decree/date was the one given by Artaxerxes in 445 BC, mainly because “Only the fourth one gave the Jews permission to rebuild Jerusalem, and it seems to be the one in view here,” according to Dr. Thomas Constable (pg. 113).

Using the 445 BC date as our starting point then, we note the text tells us “there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens” until the time of the Anointed One. This is significant for a number of reasons. First, it shows that the seven sevens and the sixty-two sevens run concurrently, back-to-back, with no break at all. Second, the end of the sixty-two sevens actually takes us up to the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The math calculations were done by Sir Robert Anderson in his book “The Coming Prince,” which brings us to AD 33 (based on a 360 day year as observed by both Jews and Babylonians), not years equaling 365 days as we do today.

We will continue our discussion of how things break down according to “weeks” (sevens) in our next article.
