Iraq Melts Down and Media Pretty Much Ignores It

IRAQ-CRISISMany may not be aware of what is actually happening in Iraq now because the media seems to be ignoring it and the issues that are causing the conflicts in Iraq. Over the last day or two, I’ve noticed scattered reports here and there from ABC, CNN, or FOX News. There’s not a great amount of detail and I would not be surprised if the mainstream media has chosen to not deal with the totality of issues related to Iraq for fear of making President Obama look bad. It’s kind of difficult to blame this current situation on Bush, though I’ve also seen a number of leftist bloggers do just that.

In short, what we’re seeing happening in Iraq is the Rise of the Insurgents as they appear to be rolling through one city/village after another. Most recently, after gaining Mosul, they set their eyes on Baghdad and were heading there to capture that city. The insurgents are opposed to Iraq’s majority Shia Muslims and essentially see them as infidels. Of course, the two main (but not only) factions within Islam are Shiite (Shia) and Sunni. Ironic how one group views the other as infidels, so at least in this case, even being a Muslim is not a safeguard against other Muslims who have deemed you to be in infidel, based on being part of what is considered to be the “incorrect” branch of Islam.

I watched a video the other day that was apparently taken by insurgents from inside their SUV. As they sped down the highway, they caught up with one car after another and simply shot the occupants of that vehicle with AK-47s. Inevitably the target vehicle would come to a stop off the road and the insurgents would backtrack to that car and ensure that all the occupants were dead.

These insurgents believe they are doing the will of Allah and will be greatly rewarded for it as they gain this city or that one for him. The way these insurgents see little to no value in human life is unbelievably barbaric, yet they easily justify themselves as warriors for Allah.

Now, Iran is ready to jump into the fray to provide help to the Iraqi government, if asked. This will widen the scope of the conflict with the potential of creating a truly regional conflict in that area of the world.

The terrible tragedy we call the Iraq War that began with George W. Bush, ultimately claiming the lives of roughly 4,500 service men and women will be all for nothing if things continue unchecked. Now though, multitudes of Sunni Muslim volunteers are coming together in Baghdad to ward off the oncoming insurgency. If a conflict occurs in Baghdad between the Sunni and Shiite, much more blood will obviously be shed.

Already, many have been beheaded – police officers and townspeople – of various locales with some of the severed heads being used as soccer balls. This has occurred as the insurgents from one village/city to another on their way to attempt to take Baghdad.

The insurgency has emerged as the biggest threat to Iraq’s stability since the US withdrawal three years ago. A new humanitarian crisis is unfolding, UN officials have warned. Rupert Colville, the UN human rights spokesman, said that hundreds of people were killed, many of them summarily executed, after Isis overran Mosul on Tuesday.”

Isis stands for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. Ultimately, the insurgents want something.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria has vowed to establish a caliphate — a unified Islamic government ruled by a caliph, someone considered to be a successor to Muhammad’s political authority — stretching from western Syria across Iraq to the eastern border with Iran.”

Besides Iran being ready to join the fight to defend the Iraqi government (Shiite), the US is also joining forces to bolster the beleaguered Iraqis. What that defense will look like remains to be seen, but could include an air campaign against the insurgents.

One thing is likely. This will not end quickly and may become worse long before it gets better and may include other nations as well. All we can do is keep an eye on things, pray, and hope for the best.
