Euthanizing Common Sense

As we view the world’s landscape, we cannot help but notice common sense and truth is being officially euthanized through the use of wokeness. While it’s easy to shake our heads at this, the situation has been repeated as often as civilization has existed throughout history. The demise of those previous societies is the result and this is exactly what’s happening today as well.

Just a cursory reading of many of the major and minor prophets of the Old Testament proves that common sense often became lacking. In Amos 4:1, we learn of the “cows of Bashan,” (rich women), who seemed to delight in ordering their husbands around. “Bring, that we may drink!” and husbands would comply to keep the peace.

The entire fourth chapter of the book of Amos is God warning Israel of their coming demise via judgment. This was because of their continued wanderlust (regarding worshiping other gods), and their abject refusal to do what was right in God’s eyes. Israel preferred to not comply with God.

Amos 5:2-3 states the following:

2 Fallen, no more to rise,
is the virgin Israel;
forsaken on her land,
with none to raise her up.”
3 For thus says the Lord God:

“The city that went out a thousand
shall have a hundred left,
and that which went out a hundred
shall have ten left
to the house of Israel.”

God always warned Israel about coming judgment to give them the opportunity to repent and change directions and to ensure that they had no excuse when judgment arrived. These warnings were also signs of His tremendous grace. Are we any better? Christians today, do we deserve His love, His grace, His working in and through us to create within us the character of Jesus? Do we praise Him and value what He has provided for us in life? Do we, above all things, seek to bless Him with lives that fear offending Him? Do we want above all to do what is right or do we still seek our own good?

10 They hate him who reproves in the gate,
and they abhor him who speaks the truth.
11 Therefore because you trample on the poor
and you exact taxes of grain from him,
you have built houses of hewn stone,
but you shall not dwell in them;
you have planted pleasant vineyards,
but you shall not drink their wine.
12 For I know how many are your transgressions
and how great are your sins—
you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe,
and turn aside the needy in the gate.
13 Therefore he who is prudent will keep silent in such a time,
for it is an evil time.
14 Seek good, and not evil,
that you may live;
and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you,
as you have said.
15 Hate evil, and love good,
and establish justice in the gate;
it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts,
will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

The people of Israel hated truth, fully rejecting it and those who dared to speak it. Israelites preferred lies to truth any day. God sent judgment because Israel deserved it, why would He ignore disciplining Christians who also do the same type of things? Do we prefer lies to truth like Israel?

Because of coming judgment, God warned Israel they would not live in homes they built. Vineyards they planted would also be enjoyed by others (v 11). God’s wrath would be poured out onto Israel because of how often they rejected His rule by seeking other gods and living the way the pagans around them lived, in complete ignorance and disregard for God. As Christians, do we prefer disregarding obedience to God because that makes us seem “legalistic”?

Common sense can actually be displaced by wrong thinking (called “wokeness” today). Wokeness isn’t really being truly awake. If those folks were truly awake, they would understand the truth of the Gospel. Instead, they give attention to lies and are then molded by those lies. That is what “wokeness” creates in people and societies.

There’s too much wrong thinking happening and not just in the world but in many churches. Too many pulpits are filled with “soy boys” in tight jeans who impress congregations by their deeply anti-biblical “woke” thoughts that superficially only sound biblical. Emotional jargon and environments (music, lights, etc.), are used to present lies (2 Timothy 3:1-6), and I believe it’s all done for personal gain, either social standing, money, self-esteem or a combination of all three.

The Church, to a large and growing degree, too often mirrors and emulates the world and its system, done through couching teaching in spiritual terms to hide the deception. We have taken God for granted and ignored the Spirit’s promptings to live a life separated (holy), from the world’s “woke” system. Today’s “wokeness” requires participating in the world’s fallen system or face censorship and canceling. I’m always concerned about some well-known religious leader who has millions of followers on social media. Jesus would’ve been summarily cancelled without apology quite some time ago if He was physically with us today just as He was literally “cancelled” when He was first here thousands of years ago. Yet this same world today embraces so many questionable leaders within Christendom? Why is that? Itching ears (2 Timothy 4:4).

This was Israel and too often, the a large part of Christendom as well today. It seems too many of us want to do our own thing and it is only when God brings discipline that we are even willing to comply at all. Common sense should kick in, but we like digging our heels in or as the Bible would say, “kicking against the goads” (Acts 26:14). Too many of us are simply unwilling to comply voluntarily, so God does what He will to get us back on track. Parents and teachers take time to do that with their children and students, so why wouldn’t God?

In today’s society, common sense has been all but completely euthanized. Up is down. Down is up. Good is bad. Evil is good. MAGA is super bad. Socialism is super good. Supporting Nazis in Ukraine is excellent and nearly divine, while supporting nationalism in the USA is evil, radical and extreme. Abortion on demand (including late-term), is “loving,” while decrying the murder of unborn children is narrow and fanatically rabid. Supporting the Constitution is political “fascism” while applauding those who walk into the USA through open borders is the loving, therefore, the “Christian” thing to do.

Forcing people to get a jab that is far less than 50% efficacious  or lose their job is said to be consistent with “loving your neighbor,” while refusing to get the jab because you or your doctor have decided for you it’s simply not the best move is “selfish.” Anyone who disagrees with Climate Change is a “radical conspiracy theorist” who wants the world destroyed. Bill Gates’ “magic (GMO) seeds” will save the world, even though GMO seeds have given rise to strong toxins and weeds that are extremely hard to control.

Men can be women and women can be men. Transgenderism can be fluid and people should all have and use pronouns they prefer. Men can now get pregnant and give birth. A man who identifies as a woman should be allowed to compete against other women in women’s sports even though that man who identifies as a woman has a man’s physique, muscle structure and strength of a man because of the way he was born. Determining gender today is not something guaranteed and certainly not something that should actually be assigned at birth even if there’s male or female genitalia. Today, gender goes much deeper than sexual organs apparently. Killing unborn babies is perfectly fine, but gender can be reassigned even before birth through surgery or chemicals, but I thought humans before they were born weren’t even human??

It used to be that a good comedian would help us laugh at ourselves because of the truth often presented sardonically. However, in today’s “woke” climate, the Left no longer laughs at anything unless it’s ridiculing conservative “fascists” on the right and apparently, only those on the right can be fascists as Google changed the definition of the term several years ago. In fact, the Left seems to always be changing definitions to suit their agenda and has lost the ability to laugh because they’re too easily enraged by truth. They believe that anyone who is not also “woke” should be “cancelled.” This cancelling or censorship is how they intend to have only one acceptable opinion (“truth”), in society. They continue efforts to make that happen.

Case in point, Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert, has been censored for this comic panel. A total of 77 newspapers pulled his strip because some people complained. The cartoon panel makes a point through absurdity. The point is simply that when people bend over backwards enough to check off all the boxes of “wokeness,” they will eventually break their own backs and fully restrict themselves. Yet they fail to comprehend that. This is all due to the fact that being “woke” goes by “feelz.” Everything is based on feelings and emotional signals (aka virtue signalling). Whether or not the Left will ever admit this, it is all done to prove their own “worth.” They take pride in the fact that others look at them with admiration. That’s what they enjoy. In essence, it’s all about THEM.

I watched a short video the other day of a young white guy dressed as a cultural Mexican with sombrero and fake mustache. Most of the young people he spoke with on college campuses were offended that he dared to appropriate another culture. He then went to a Mexican celebration and repeatedly asked actual Mexicans if they were offended. They all said they were not and thought he looked great. You could actually tell they were pleased. In other words, they took his “appropriation” as a compliment to their culture, not an invasion of it.

All of this has harmed and will continue to harm society because it is based on lies. People who succumb to it give up on their ability to have and use common sense.

So what do we do about all of what is happening in society? We simply do the exact opposite of what the world is doing by rejecting “wokeness” in all forms since it is all based on lies and feel-good emotions.

Today, the Left sees themselves as virtuous “servants” but in reality they serve the lie (2 Thessalonians 2:11), which ultimately means they serve themselves. They do whatever it takes to make themselves feel good, but in actuality, they are literally walking dead, having terminated common sense via wokeness long ago. This is part of God’s judgment on them as Paul clearly delineates in Romans 1. The saddest part is them thinking they have taken the high road when in fact, they are actually taking the low or wide road that leads only to more lies, heartache, despair and ultimately, eternal separation from God.
