Biblical Perspective on Illegal Immigration

Some Would Eliminate America's Borders Under the Guise of Religion

In the coming days – March 21st to be specific – liberal bleeding hearts are heading to Washington, DC to protest the fact that America’s borders are not open for all people from all countries to merely walk in.

Mark Tooley stated, “Joining with groups like ACORN, a wide coalition of religious left groups will march on Washington, D.C. on March 21 on behalf of eventual amnesty and largely open borders under the rubric of Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR). The National Council of Churches (NCC) is even hailing CIR as a “divine mandate” and a “patriotic act.”[1]

The interesting thing of course, is that there are multitudes of illegal immigrants in our country.  They are not registered, they do not pay taxes, and yet there are people like this living in our country, sending their children to schools, and receiving medical aid when they need it.  In essence, while they are giving nothing back to America, they are mainly taking.

I simply do not understand how some people think, honestly.  According to Tooley’s article, spokespeople for the upcoming march on Washington are demanding that the broken immigration problem in our country be fixed.  Their solution is to throw open the borders – wide open!  How does that fix anything?  It solves no problem at all.

The article goes onto say that “the march’s co-sponsor is the decidedly less religious ‘Reform Immigration for America,’ whose members include ACORN, CodePink, National Council of LaRaza, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and People for the American Way, among many others, including labor groups, like the AFL-CIO. Plus, of course, the Council on American Islamic Relations and Muslim Public Affairs Council are signed on. The church groups are specifically urging support for Illinois Democratic Congressman Rep. Luis Gutierrez’s Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America’s Security and Prosperity Act.”[2]

Essentially – as unbelievable as it sounds – there are groups in this country who simply want to see America fall, and they are hastening it along with their beliefs.  Though America has given them all they have in most cases, they are not content with that.  They want – like our current President and many within Congress – to turn America into a Socialist state, one in which everyone (except the ultra rich) share and share alike.

Unfortunately, there is no country in history that has succeeded with Socialism.  Like Welfare can and often does create laziness in people, though it is not meant to do that.  People get used to getting something for nothing, which can often take away from them the motivation to go out and work.  Granted, a percentage of those on Welfare actually need those services and it is good that our government created that system.  The problem of course is that there are way too many who are on it, and have learned how to beat it.  Obviously, that is not why that system was created.

My wife spent time in Europe a number of years ago.  She went through a country that was largely Socialistic.  Businesses were owned by the government of that country.  There was absolutely no incentive for the employees (in the shoe store where my wife was attempting to buy a pair of shoes), to wait on my wife.  They got the same money whether they sold any shoes or did not sell any.  After a time of receiving no help at all, my wife walked out.

Why for goodness sakes would we want to turn America into a country of “state workers”?  While that may sound insulting to some, I spent one summer working for a state government.  I quickly learned that things were done one way – slowly.  If you went faster than your co-workers, you received dirty looks.  If you did not “get it,” someone eventually pulled you aside and explained the way the system worked.  Working slowly created job security, which was the name of the game.

At least with state workers, they do some work.  Those on Welfare do nothing and most like it that way.  Where illegal immigrants are concerned, most are hard working individuals, who are simply trying to provide for their families.  The difficulty though is the drain they often unintentionally place on the services of this country.

In states near the Mexican border, it is very common for pregnant women in Mexico to come into neighboring states and give birth.  Obviously, they do this because the care is better, but they also do it because their child will then have citizenship of the United States, which of course means, that as the child’s mother, she is entitled to receive services from the state and local governments, even though she is an illegal immigrant.

The large question is, what does the Bible say about this whole situation?  We know that during Jesus’ day, the practice, which started with Moses, was to leave some of the crop standing and unharvested.  This small bit of crop that was leftover was for the poor and widows.  They would be able to come through and take enough that they could carry in their hand to eat.  They were not allowed to use implements to harvest the leftover crop (that would have been stealing), but to take enough to assuage their hunger was permissible and the crop was left for that reason.

Nations that have borders seems to be something that God Himself ordained, which goes back to the Tower of Babel.  Joseph Farrar states, “Nation-states are an invention of the Creator – a deliberately chosen device to serve His purposes.”[3]

If God ordained the nation-state, then it must be for a good reason.  “Ultimately, the purpose of nation-states seems to be to restrain Satan’s efforts at creating his kingdom on earth. That will happen eventually – only when God Himself permits it in His timing, as shown in Revelation 17:17: ‘For God hath put in their hearts to fulfill his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.’ But nation-states serve another purpose as well – to be God’s instruments on earth for meting out justice and providing protection for the people. (Deuteronomy 17:14-17)“[4]

The problem of course, is that with the Clinton Administration and the North American Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was a large first step in eliminating borders between the United States and Canada.  It was the first step in blending people of neighboring countries together.  Farrar comments, “This agreement, which was supposed to stem the tide of illegal immigration by stimulating the economy of Mexico, had the exact opposite effect. It wrecked it beyond all recognition, stimulating, instead, a massive exodus of Mexican workers to the U.S. trying to provide for their families.”[5]

Farrar continues opining, “this was no accident. It was not just a mistake. It was, I believe, an effort to “harmonize” the two countries – to begin integrating them, erasing the differences between them, mixing the populations to such an extent that discussions of merging the three major North American nations along the lines of the European Union would no longer seem inappropriate.

In other words, what is happening in North America and Europe and Africa and Asia – breaking down the barriers of nation-state sovereignty – is not that much different from what happened back in the days of the Tower of Babel.”[6]

It seems at every turn, there are people who simply want to throw the United States under the bus.  They are doing whatever they can to move this country rapidly toward Socialism.  They simply do not care how the average American feels about it either.  The only reason President Obama recently decided to start listening to Republications over the health care issue is because of the fact that when Sen. Kennedy died, a longshot Republican was voted into his vacated seat!  All of a sudden, it became important for President Obama to consider the Republican opinion.  Could it also have had something to do with the fact that he knew without Republicans at that point, his health care dream was dead in the water?

It does not seem to matter how much the United States helps other countries in need.  It does not seem to matter how quickly people from our country are on the scene in places like Chile or elsewhere.  As far as the world is concerned, the only time the good ol’ U. S. is needed is when they need our money and our resources.

This does not mean that we should take a “talk to the hand” approach with respect to the needs of other countries at all.  What it means is that we need to begin looking at where the money is coming from to help everyone else when in point of fact, unemployment in this country is higher than ever, since the 1929 crash.

There is a biblical way to meet needs and obviously God is in control even when it looks like He is not in control.  There is biblical evidence to support the fact that Satan – prior to his fall from grace – was the highest created being in the universe under God Himself.  It appears from Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 that one of his jobs included directly the heavenly choir.  It also appears – because of what he wore – that he was actually king (small “k”) of heaven (again, under God).

When Satan fell, he lost direct control of all that God had created.  When he saw that God had created a human being in the form of Adam and that Adam had been put in charge of Eden and the Earth, Satan realized that God had created another king (small “k”) to rule over His Creation.  This galled Satan and he knew the only way he could gain direct control was by causing Adam to fall.  He would not stand by and allow this created upstart to do the job that he (Satan) had done!

Since the Garden of Eden, Satan’s goal has been to rule the world.  We can see the definite beginnings of this in the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11).  It was then that God condounded languages and created various cultures.  However, since that time, Satan has never stopped attempting to bring the world together as one.  He knows that when he is able to accomplish this, the world will literally be his oyster – at least for a time.

The world is moving toward that end.  It has been happening and it continues to happen.  One day, the world will be one, with a one-world ruler and the one-world religion he will be pushing.  Eventually, that one-world religion will be the outright worship of him.  Since he will be the son of Satan, the world will be worshiping Satan unknowingly.  Satan will get his wish to be ruler of that which he did not create, but only for a time.  It is amazing how quickly things are moving along, as preordained by God.

All the folks who are pushing for America to eliminate her borders are simply pawns, in a much larger game.  They see nothing but their own selfish gain and though they are using the “religion” card on this very heated topic of illegal immigration, all that matters is that they get what they want.

They will get it eventually, but woe to them through which that comes.  They will have gotten far more than that for which they bargained.
