With Osama bin Laden Dead, Can We Expect Reprisals?

May 2, 2011 at 9:27 AM 4 comments

By now, the world is aware of the fact that al-Qaeda mastermind and founder Osama bin Laden is dead, killed in his opulent mansion in Abbottabad, just 40 miles from the capital of Pakistan.  All those thoughts of bin Laden living in a cave someplace proved to be false, as he was essentially living in plain sight behind walled security gates, with his wives, two sons, and two couriers, who had unintentionally led U.S. forces to bin Laden.

With bin Laden dead, his personal reign of terrorism comes to an end and his eternal reign of being on the receiving end of terror begins in hell.  Of course, even though bin Laden is dead, the question naturally arises regarding the possibility of the world seeing reprisals from the al-Qaeda network he began?  The answer is of course.  Why would they stop?  Why would they fear what the United States or any other country can do to them?

For the radical Muslim, death means victory; their victory.  They gain in the next life what they do not have in this life, according to their own beliefs.  While on one hand, bin Laden’s death means a serious blow to the al-Qaeda network, no one with any brains would believe that al-Qaeda will now fall apart.  Over the long run, it certainly could because bin Laden’s money may not necessarily be available to anyone who would replace him.  If this is the case, then the death of bin Laden will have caused a far more serious problem for al-Qaeda than simply the fact that their founder and leader is gone from the land of the living.

I have wondered for a long time why we have not seen more suicide bombers in the U.S., as we see them routinely in other countries.  In fact, except for the two attempts in Oregon and NYC, the direct attacks on people within the borders of the United States does not exist.

With the death of bin Laden, it is very likely that al-Qaeda will ramp up its efforts throughout the world and may very likely attempt terrorist hits within the United States proper.  I’m certainly not saying that as someone who has any hidden knowledge of what al-Qaeda may be up to, but simply as someone who is using logic to attempt to define what al-Qaeda’s next move will be.

Logically, either they will crumble into nothing (very little chance of that), or they will strike fast and hard (very likely), because if they do not hit hard some place, then the world will begin to think that they have vanquished a foe.  Since bin Laden created and built this network from the ground up, then it is logical to conclude that the network goes beyond one man.  Again however, the money that bin Laden has ($300 million or so) may not be available to those within his own private network of terrorists.  If they do not have access to it, they will be severely hampered in their efforts.

What George W. Bush started a number of years ago by using the strength of our fine military forces, Mr. Obama was able to complete, also with the help of our intelligence agencies and our military.  In this case, the Navy Seals apparently took the lead and in spite of a fire fight in which it is said bin Laden shot first, were able to take the al-Qaeda leader out of this life and into the next.

According to the news, bin Laden’s body (after arriving at a 99.9% surety in his identity) was buried at sea.  Apparently in Islam, a Muslim must be buried within 24 hours of death and as cited by the news reports, it is probably doubtful that finding a country willing to take his body and bury it, would have occurred, so the decision was made to bury him at sea.

At this point, I would ask, who cares about Islam’s burial rights?  While bin Laden certainly was a devout and extremely radical Muslim, I don’t think it’s incumbent upon the United States to follow Islamic protocol in this case.  At the same time, I’m sure the powers that be in the U.S. opted to follow prescribed Islamic procedure here in order to reduce the possibility of attacks over that fact.

So what does this mean for the rest of terrorist organizations throughout the world?  Well, hopefully it sends a message that no matter who you are or where you are hiding, we will find you and take you alive, or dead.  Dead is preferable since there is no chance of that person ever being able to do anything else that even smacks of terrorism.

At the same time, a dead bin Laden will also be seen as a martyr for Islam and will be virtually worshiped for the cause of Islam.  That’s fine, as I would rather have radical Muslims idolize bin Laden (which they did anyway I’m sure), as a dead person, than continue to be able to gain financial resources and direction from him to carry out their terrorist crimes and activities.

This world will never go back to a time before al-Qaeda, even if al-Qaeda becomes severely hampered due to bin Laden’s death.  Other terrorist networks exist and even if al-Qaeda winds up not growing and even dwindling, other groups will fill the space with their own activity.

The war on terror continues and so does the terrorist’s war against the West.  We can bet that they will not take this death of bin Laden lying down.  Whether we hear from them tomorrow, next week, next month, or next year, they will boldly make their statement known that though a very important leader is gone, they will continue the work that he began.

US Could Have Used bin Laden’s Death to Expose Sympathizers

The issue of burial is very important in the Muslim mind. There is a special prayer over the body which is typically followed by burial in the dust.

Burying in the Islamic way gives the close relatives and friends (or followers in case of bin Laden) psychological comfort that the person died as a Muslim and will go to the paradise. This concept has roots in the following verse “Quran 12:101 . . . O Thou Creator of the heavens and the earth! Thou art my Protector in this world and in the Hereafter. Take Thou my soul (at death) as a Muslim . . . ”

The punishment for early Muslims who refused to share in jihad was to forego the funeral prayer and not to bury them as Muslims (see Quran 9:84 Nor do thou ever pray for any of them [who refused to do Jihad] that dies, nor stand at his grave; for they rejected Allah and His Messenger, and died in a state of perverse rebellion).

Furthermore, according to shariah, if a Muslim is considered to be an apostate, he must not be buried as a Muslim. Indian Muslims, for example, refused to bury as Muslims the Islamic terrorists who committed the Mumbai attacks in 2008, as refusing to bury them as Muslims is the most powerful sign of rejecting terrorism.

After killing bin Laden the United States should have asked leading Islamic organizations such as the OIC, Muslim Brotherhood, and leading Islamic institutes & scholars whether or not they would consider bin Laden a Muslim and thus wanted to give him a Muslim funeral or not.

If these groups, which claim to be peaceful, consider bin Laden a Muslim and asked for a Muslim burial for him, then their sympathy and support for bin Laden would be exposed.

On the contrary, if these groups refuse to give him a funeral prayer and reject considering him a Muslim, then this would have been a stronger blow to al-Qaida ideology and its supporters than the killing bin Laden itself.

Asking Muslim groups and organizations if they wanted to bury bin Laden as a Muslim would have been a win-win situation for the U.S.

Just heard that at least part of the reason bin Laden was buried at sea was to keep any physical grave site from becoming a shrine to the fallen leader of Al-Qaeda.

I am being presumptuous, Osama Bin Laden has been located the past years. The military (being presumptuous on my part) was tracking the Al Qaeda cells around the world with the info coming out of Osama’s HQ. I truly believe the military intel and the current administration as well as previous had known about his whereabouts. Because of Pakistan and USA border diplomacy, it was not pursued. Now it has been opened and pursuit has been available to go for the target known for some time. Also, election is at hand and no better than to make the US people believe that the US leader is a hero. Far from it.

I agree that our current president had little to nothing to do with the capture of Osama bin Laden. He simply did not CURTAIL the chase and happened to be president at the time. If not for Bush, we wouldn’t be over there in first place defending the honor of our country and those nearly 3,000 individuals who died on 9/11.
