Leonard Nimoy’s Letter to Americans for Peace Now

June 10, 2011 at 3:28 PM 2 comments

Recently, Leonard “Mr. Spock” Nimoy wrote a letter to Americans for Peace Now and they published the letter on their home page.

Nimoy, an entertainer and fellow Jew, wrote with his concerns about the constant skirmishes, wars, and rumors of wars in the Middle East section of the world.  Like many, Nimoy advocates a two-state solution to the problem of peace that has continued to be out of reach.

The solution to the problem, according to Nimoy, can come but not without great effort and education.  He believes that laying aside the blame game will help the process.

Certainly, I agree with Nimoy that if everyone would stop blaming (and it should be noted that most people and groups lay the bulk of the blame at the feet of Israel), we might actually begin to see peace on the horizon.  Consider how many people have said and believe that Israel has no right to be in the Middle East at all.  Are these people going to change their minds?  Are they going to be satisfied to allow Israel to remain where they are if they give up Land for peace, something that they have consistently done for decades to no avail?  How much more Land are they supposed to give up?  Should they – as Mr. Obama stated (then effectively retracted, saying he actually did not mean what he said; something he routinely does after a speech as if we’re all idiots and cannot understand his plain talk) – that Israel should return to pre-1967 borders?  Would that make everyone calm down and stop the protests against Israel?  I don’t think so.  In fact, I don’t believe most people in this world would be happy if Israel retained any Land in the Middle East.  While they might grudgingly be willing to allow Israel keep some of their current Land, it wouldn’t be much of it and certainly, East Jerusalem – the part with the Temple Mount in it – would have to go to the Arabs.

However, while I don’t believe Mr. Nimoy is naive as far as the world is concerned, yet he – and the majority in the world – seems to be naive where God is concerned.  That’s common today and it’s not even uncommon for Christians to be naive where God is concerned regarding Israel and the Middle East.

Anyone who advocates peace anywhere in the world – but particularly in the Middle East – should be applauded.  The difficulty however, is that when the problem includes two groups who are so far apart ideologically and diametrically opposed to one another as the Israelis are with nearly all Arab/Muslim groups/nations and visa versa in the Middle East, that peace itself is essentially impossible to achieve, except by an act of God.

I wrote my own letter to Americans for Peace Now.  I doubt seriously that they will publish it anywhere on their website, much less on the home page and that’s fine.  I don’t expect them to do so.  However, I would like to publish my own response to Mr. Nimoy’s comments here for anyone who is interested in reading it.

The problem of the Middle East is a grave one and education alone will not work that problem out.  The reason for this is simple: people already believe they are educated enough about the situation and do not need further education.  Those who believe the fault lies squarely with Israel for instance, will likely not change their minds any time soon.  At the same time, I certainly have no intention of changing my mind either, so that leaves us at a stalemate.

Of course, I’m not going to become violent about it as some are prone to do regarding this situation.  I’m also not going to stoop to the level of protesting a leader of a nation of the world’s speech just so that I can be roughly escorted out and possibly arrested.  It wouldn’t solve anything at all.

Even IF a two-state solution could be agreed upon, right now, the world is seriously leaning toward giving Arabs Old Jerusalem, which includes the Temple Mount.  Why should Israel reasonably be expected to accept that deal, especially when on paper, they control the Temple Mount right now?

Here’s my letter to Americans for Peace Now and if I hear back from them, I’ll post their response here as well:
I read Mr. Nimoy’s letter and it never ceases to amaze me that people continue to push for a two-state solution in an area where you have only one group that is actually willing to pursue it.

I have not seen any indication from the Arab nations surrounding Israel that they are willing to even cease their endless rhetoric, much less enter into a willingness to come to terms with the situation.

When you have individuals like President Ahmadinejad saying he will not rest until every last Jew is out of the Middle East, and other Islamic groups and nations echoing the same sentiment, it becomes clear that a two-state solution is supported only by Israel.

Today, Israel has very few allies.  In fact, I can only think of one – Canada.  Not even the United States is much of an ally to Israel anymore.

While Arabs/Muslims are screaming that Israel has no history in the Middle East and are demanding East Jerusalem as their capitol (the very same area that King David had as the capitol of his kingdom), the world seems to be completely unwilling to hear anything Israel has to say.

At every turn, the Jewish people are maligned, denigrated, and blamed for things they have not even done.  Recently, pictures were released from the infamous flotilla in which it was charged that Israel over-reacted to a flotilla of “peace,” yet it is patently clear now from the photos that individuals on the flotilla HAD guns as they waited for Israeli law enforcement officials to board the ship.

The sad tragedy of the Middle East is that the “Palestinians” are not a unique culture all their own.  Years ago, anyone who lived in Palestine was called a Palestinian (so-named after the A.D. 70 Roman sacking of Jerusalem, which precipitated the destruction of the Jewish Temple then as well).  Yasser Arafat came along and designated people of Arab descent as the true Palestinians, in spite of the fact that for years prior, Jews living in that area were also classified as Palestinian.

Today’s “Palestinian” has no unique culture, language, or ethnicity.  Yet the world believes that they do and because of it, deserve part of the Land of Israel.  It’s a mockery and absolutely ridiculous.

The Palestinians of today are Arab.  That’s it; plain and simple.  They are Arabs and Israel is already surrounded by Arab nations and groups.  That’s not good enough though.  Israel was attacked on the Sabbath in 1967 and eventually won a decisive victory, gaining more land than they had previously.  Since that time, the Arab nations that surround her (some of whom attacked her with Egypt) have been crying that Israel should give their land back to them.

I cannot imagine that if Israel had been defeated in the Six-Day War, that the world would have run to her aid, demanding that the Arab nations that attacked her without provocation should now return the land they stole.

Until Arab groups and nations are willing to recognize Israel’s statehood, there will never be peace in the Middle East.  History has shown that irrespective of how much land Israel has given back over the past number of decades, it has NEVER been good enough for her enemies, who simply move into that newly returned land and continue shelling.

Yet, all eyes are on the world as if Israel is the one who is holding up the peace process.  Sorry, it’s not Israel.  It is due to a number of Arab nations and radical Islamists who want nothing more than to see every Jew in the Middle East eradicated.

So, how do you gain peace in an area of the world where only one group has really shown repeatedly that peace is what they want?

Thank you for your time.

Israel was not attacked in 1967;Israel attacked Egypt. I doubt that Nasser’s blockade of Eilat could be called an “armed attack”,which is what the U.N. Charter says you need to go to war.

You’re wrong Aaron. Egypt and others gathered together to attack Israel on the Sabbath, when Israel could not, and did not retaliate, until AFTER the Sabbath. Not sure where you are getting your history, but it is wrong.

Realistically, who cares how the UN defines what is needed to go to war?

All that aside, please read Ezekiel 36 – 39 for more information on what God is doing in the Middle East. Thanks.
