Bob Costas and His Convenient Lies About Guns

In the past week or so, we have heard about a number of events that have occurred in various parts of the United States that have certainly been of a violent nature.  As usual, the media is there to embrace the call to outlaw guns in society.  Whenever they do this, they portray themselves as individuals who are opposed to the 2nd Amendment and idiots without the ability to use logic (yes, that description is deliberately redundant).

Football Player Dies
Without question, this event was absolutely tragic.  I’m very sorry it happened at all.  With events like these, it would be so wonderful to be able to turn back the hands of time to before the event occurred and intervene so that it doesn’t. Both the football player and his girlfriend are now in eternity and my natural question is where are they spending it?

It is very sad indeed when someone takes another person’s life, but this particular pro-baller took his girlfriend’s life and then his own in front of the Kansas City Chief’s General Manager and Coach.  I desperately wish there was a way for these people at that point in their life to see beyond the grave!  For linebacker Jovan Belcher, his life is completely over. That is always a tragedy when something like this happens.  Distraught over whatever the circumstances happened to be, he felt that the only way to resolve his problem was to end his life.  It is unthinkable, yet it happens and too often.

What is annoying though is when some sportscaster decides to use the situation for political purposes.  In this case, Bob Costas quoted a columnist regarding this event and here is what he said.

Our current gun culture…ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy. And more convenience store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead. Handguns do not enhance our safety.

“They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it. In the coming days, Jovan Belcher’s actions and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows?  But here…is what I believe — if Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Cassandra Perkins would both be alive today.” [1; emphasis added]

The thoughts of Jason Whitlock (quoted above as read by Bob Costas) are, in many ways poignant.  However, in one area, he is utterly wrong.  The one comment that “handguns do not enhance our safety” is patently wrong, yet like other lies that are oft-repeated by the media and politicians alike, this one, said enough times, will become “truth” for society.

I have personally (and even recently) provided a number of cases where individuals have used handguns to protect themselves against criminals.  Women are increasingly using them to ward off rapists.  I have even provided numerous links to sites where instances of “armed citizens” using handguns to defend themselves, their homes, or their families are constantly being cataloged.  The truth is though that the same media that allows Bob Costas to go off on his rant involving the fairy tale that says if we remove guns from society, gun crime goes with it.  It simply does not happen that way.

As I have stated before, this would only work if guns were never illegally imported into the United States (mainly through Mexico), if no one ever made a gun for any purpose whatsoever (including the military and law enforcement), and if no one actually knew how to create their own gun.  This is the only way it would work.

It is absurd to think that by simply outlawing guns in society, gun crime would go down.  Has that worked for drugs?  We have a greater problem with drugs today than we did in the 60s, yet there are more laws against illegal drug use today than there were in the 60s.  It is obvious – or should be – that outlawing something does not work to ensure that it will not be a problem in society.

Interestingly enough, there is a growing movement within society to make certain drug use legal.  Funny, we cannot win the war on drugs, so now the cry is that we need to legalize at least some of them.

With guns, if we made it illegal for people to have guns, the only people who would have them would be those who care less about the rule of law in society.  They would dance with glee knowing that they next time they invaded someone’s home, they would have a better chance of getting their way because they would not be met with lethal force.

It is the same for some perpetrator who attempts to break into a home of a single woman for the purpose of raping her.  The likelihood of her having a gun would be minimal at best, so that criminal could have his way with that woman.

Writer Jason Whitlock ends his commentary by stating that if Belcher had not had a gun, both he and his girlfriend would still be alive.  It’s a wonderful thought, but not necessarily true.  Belcher could have used a knife or baseball bat, or tire iron, or fireplace tool, or…you get the picture.  The point is that someone who really wants to kill someone else finds a way to do it.

Bow and Arrow Deaths
Do we need to look any further than what also just occurred in Wyoming?  There, a man killed his a female college professor with a knife, then killed his own father (another professor) with an arrow shot from a bow in front of a classroom of students.  People who want to kill will find a way to kill.

But supposing the female victim had a gun on her and at the first sign of danger, she used it to subdue Christopher Krumm, her attacker.  What would have been the result?  She would be alive today, Krumm would have been at least wounded or dead and his father would still be alive.  But see, this scenario doesn’t fit with Jason Whitlock’s or Bob Costas’ because they don’t like guns and see no need for them.

They erroneously believe that removing guns from society means a safer society.  Should we now remove all knives and bows and arrows from society too?  This constant attack on guns is misdirection from the elitists who simply want us without the ability to defend ourselves.

Another Muslim and His Bomb
You have also heard of the recent bombing of a Social Security Administration office in Arizona.  There, a bomb exploded at the rear entrance of the government office in Casa Grand, AZ in which no one was hurt. [2]

Apparently the perpetrator – Abdullatif A. Aldosary – was either not aware that building and setting off explosive devices is illegal, or simply doesn’t care.  It is fully illegal to make this type of device and just as illegal to set it off so that it can do intentional harm to others.  There are laws against this kind of thing, yet Aldosary apparently didn’t care and felt his mission placed him above the law.

So, what do we do now?  Pamela Geller asks an interesting question here.  “Where was CNN….. When a bacon sandwich is 100 yards from a mosque, they issue a special report … and President Obama takes to the airwaves to shake his boneless finger at us.” [3]

It’s the truth, isn’t it?  When that bacon sandwich appeared to be a form of Islamic harassment, the news media was all over it, condemning the action as a form of hate-crime.  Finally, an anonymous individual called into the local law enforcement office to meekly say that he had simply left the sandwich in the park so that the animals could finish it off rather than throwing it away.

Yet, here we are, witness to another terrorist event within the borders of America and not only is the media fairly silent on calling it what it is, but the Obama administration has nothing to say about it either.  I mean, it can’t be called “workplace violence” since that usually stems from employees of a particular business taking their frustrations out on other employees (usually in management).  So, was it just a bomb that some guy who happened to be Muslim decide to set off for no real reason?

Obviously, we need to outlaw all bomb-making supplies from society so that no one can ever make a bomb again.  This is absurd.  Bombs do not enhance the safety of society, right?  Wrong.  Controlled demolitions are used all the time to bring down structures safely.  Dynamite is used to remove large sections of rock and hills so that roads can be created.  In the right hands, a bomb (if you will) can be used for very constructive purposes.  It’s the same with a handgun.

The pipe dream that removal of guns from society will enhance safety is simply that – a pipe dream.  It is not reality.  Removing guns from society is the PC way of saying “removing guns from all law-abiding citizens.”  Once again, the criminal will still have his and he will still have the ammo for it.

The truth is that there are many lies rotating throughout society now and they are purposefully being repeated so that people – who are unable to think for themselves – will simply come to believe them as truth.

You know, the Old West is often portrayed as ruthless, godless, and lawless.  The belief that gunslingers in the Old West had shootouts every other day is complete myth.  The actual truth is that more often than not, the very fact that most people carried their weapons with them wherever they went absolutely did enhance the safety of society is something that is completely downplayed today.  Yet, it is the truth.

Guns offer a form of safety in society, whether the liberal mind will ever be able to comprehend that or not.  In my home, if we ever experience a home invasion, the ambulance will be removing someone from our home and taking them to the hospital.  It is simply the fact of the situation that will come into play if someone decides that they should break into my home to do whatever they want to do.  Guns can take life, but they can and do save life as well.  Deal with that truth, Bob Costas.
