Netflix, I am So Over You

May 2, 2013 at 10:53 AM 6 comments

netflix2I recently wrote an article for The Brenner Brief about how Netflix was playing politics by connecting Sarah Palin to the movie “Iron Sky.”  My article is titled “Netflix Takes a Tweep Shot at Sarah Palin with #SarahPalinFilms.”

If you take the time to read it, you’ll note that yes, I was sarcastic and even went so far as to denigrate Janet Napolitano (who hasn’t?) and the once great state of California where I spent 25 years as legal resident.  Apparently, some folks took umbrage at my article.  They are connected with the League of Women Voters in Delaware County Ohio.

One gal who claims to be a conservative stated the following:

I have to say, I was astonished by this article and I’m a conservative! I take issue with the use of the word “libtard” (which is clearly a combination of “liberal” and “retard” – how offensive.) Can’t those of differing political philosophies disagree without name calling? I found it difficult to see the author’s point because I was too distracted by the hateful rhetoric being spewed. Sorry, but I have to give this one a huge thumbs down!

Another gal claims:

I don’t think Sarah Palin herself would defend that article. I think you would have lost her at ‘libtard’.”

Of course, what is amazing from these individuals is not once did they condemn Netflix’s tweet that started the whole thing.  They also did not offer any support Palin, but simply took the time to castigate me and the article I wrote.  If you’d care to do so, feel free to read my original article and decide for yourself.  Their comments out them as liberals, in spite of their claims to the contrary.

It’s always interesting to hear liberals say that we should all just get along, yet they never condemn derogatory or even libelous comments from those on the left.  They only have problems with what those on the right have to say.

As far as Netflix goes, I think I’ve had it with them.  When I lived in California, Reed Hastings (CEO of Netflix) was on the statewide board of education as chair.  He ruffled many feathers because of his position and I believe, he eventually even came to tears and stepped down.

Then of course, we know of the changing rates with Netflix and them trying to introduce two scales of membership and pricing; one for mailed DVDs and one for streaming.  It was ridiculous and they lost many customers because of it.

I hung on though as a streaming customer.  Truth be told, there is not a great deal of programming that I like to watch on Netflix though.  I watch Downton Abbey, Monarch of the Glen, and House of Cards.  The first two are available on DVD and House of Cards likely will be.  Since Cards is Netflix original programming, I probably won’t buy it though because that would mean continuing to support Netflix and I’m at the point of wanting to cut the cord.

So what do I do instead?  Well, there are numerous entertainment venues like Netflix, so I have a number to choose from for my programming.

Roku-3-with-Headphones-1024x597What I have ultimately decided to do is to purchase a Roku 3 Streaming Player that will connect to my TV and via wireless Internet, I will be able to have access to over 750 channels and be able to stream 1080p.

I will also have access to Amazon Prime, which is similar but possibly better than Netflix.  Cost of the unit varies but the subscription to Amazon Prime is $79/year, as opposed to $96/year for Netflix (streaming).

prime-header-ship-aiv-kindle._V400927887_I fully believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinion about anything, including politics.  My problem is when I am paying for a subscription to something and that company believes they can share their political position with me unasked without concern for my own political viewpoint.

I don’t call up Netflix and share my political opinion with them unasked, so why is it all right for them to do what with me?  It isn’t and beyond that, it’s absurd.

My Roku 3 should be here by this Saturday and shortly after that, I’ll be saying good-bye to Netflix.  I will be calling them personally to tell them why I am no longer going to be one of their customers.

Frankly, I’m really tired of the Sarah Palin bashing.  It’s gone on too long and the names she has been called are absolutely appalling.  Certainly, me referring to liberals in general as “libtards” or even implying that Janet Napolitano is not the most attractive person in the world is nothing compared to what people like Bill Maher and others have called Palin.

She deserves better than that.  But since Netflix decided the other day to enter the foray with a tweet of their own, they obviously publicly chose sides.  Good for them.  They’re entitled to it, but I am just as entitled to choose to no longer spend my money with them.

Besides, I’m sure other liberals will step up to the plate and sign up to replace conservatives like myself who are leaving.  That’s fine too.  The main thing is that my money will no longer support Reed Hastings’ politics.

“Private” (as opposed to “public”) Roku channels are simply unlisted channels that you have to install manually by inputting a specific code you can look up online. You can find private channels dedicated to a variety of topics including fishing, NASA, international news, and religion.

I think you owe mikeyritter an apology for insinuating that enjoys pornography or would encourage others to view inappropriate content – especially when it seems to me he was doing the opposite, and trying to help you make the most of your new purchase and use your Roku to watch Christian interest programming.

      Hi Dave,

How are things at Philadelphia Biblical University – or Cairn as it’s now referred to? Good, I hope. I see you’re a busy man on campus!

Since publishing my article on Netflix, I’ve done a good amount of research on private channels Dave, and it is as you said.

However, if you read what Mikey said carefully, he noted “As for Netflix vs Roku (or any other streamer), Roku offers many more channels (many religious), including Netflix… There are also many “private” channels if you do a little research on the Internet.” (emphasis added)

His reference to “private” channels came AFTER his reference to “many religious” channels, so for me, it was not a stretch to think that he was talking about porn since he separated “religious” from “private”. This is especially so now that I have come to understand that there ARE a ton of porn channels that are also labeled “private” through Roku. The number of regular “private” channels seems to pale in comparison to the number of “private porn” channels. But what are you going to do with a world in which Satan is the god of this age, Dave? It’s to be expected.

By the way, since you are employed at Cairn, you may wish to point out to someone on campus that the IP address still shows Philadelphia Bilbical University, not Cairn. They may want to see about changing that since it’s very clear that they were in a hurry to remove any reference to the Bible or biblical from the college’s name. Maybe you can change it yourself because of your position there.

One other thing…while I have your attention. I’ve tried to contact people about getting my name removed from all campus mailings, including the Cairn magazine. I’ve had no luck and in spite of my best efforts, they keep sending it. Obviously, I’m contacting the wrong people.

I’d like them to stop sending it to me. I’m trying to save Cairn some money in postage and paper. 🙂 My name is Fred DeRuvo, I live in Georgia, and I graduated in 1979. Any help you can provide would be wonderful.

Take care and thanks for writing.

By the way, I’m curious Dave, how did you happen to come across this site?

Thanks Pam. I’m looking forward to saying too-da-loo to Netflix.

I agree, I think more liberals should move to the left coast 🙂

Wow. Did you bother to do any research for this piece, Maybe you should look at Netflix’s financials! They are doing very well.. As for Sarah Palin… Her problem is that many times she opens her mouth, she sticks her foot into it. Maybe it’s because truth has little relevance to what she claims. Wonder if she ever did figure out that there is a difference between Concord NH & Concord MA? But what I find more astonishing is that you try to rationalize your behavior and comments with those of Bill Mahre. So 2 wrongs make a right? The word retard is quite offensive today. Using the word “libtard” only demonstrates ignorance, and definitely not a Christian attitude. I’m sure Jesus would be proud of it, and that is the height of hypocrisy.

As for Netflix vs Roku (or any other streamer), Roku offers many more channels (many religious), including Netflix… There are also many “private” channels if you do a little research on the Internet. Roku is awesome, I think better than Apple’s…

I’m not interested in Netflix’s financials and that was not the point, Mikey. My point is that they entered the fray politically and I’m taking my business elsewhere.

As far as Palin sticking her foot in her mouth, give me a break, PLEASE? Should we discuss the relative truth that seems to guide Mr. Obama and those of his administration?

Thanks for judging me, Mikey. But I’m wondering if you have read the gospels and the many times that Jesus called his opponents names like “white washed sepulchres,” or “vipers,” or “hypocrites,” or other things?

Bill Maher referred to Palin as a c*nt and a “tw*t. I mean come on, Mikey, referring to liberals in general as libtards has offended you?

You’re obviously on the liberal side of things because once again, you make no attempt to condemn Netflix for their tweet. You are simply interested in denigrating me for my opinion.

And to top it off, I’m sure YOU think you have a Christian attitude. Think again.

I don’t know what you mean by “private” channels. Is that porn, Mikey? If so, not interested. But please, feel free to enjoy.
