God is Sovereign

It is very easy to become wrapped up with all of the events that are occurring throughout the world.  It is easy to focus on what President Obama is doing, or is not doing.  We can become distracted by the constant threats of war in the Middle East, or the economy, or our own jobs, or a million other things besides.

This is at least one reason why some people do not study Eschatology (End Times, or Last Days prophecy) because they believe it is more of a reason to be sidetracked than anything else.  It definitely could become that, if we are not careful.

What is worse though, than becoming sidetracked with prophetic discourse, is failing to remember that in all things, through all things, and in spite of the way things look, God is absolutely in control.

A dear woman in my church just called me to share this very thought.  She did so because her son called her and shared it with her.  Years ago, this son was on the wrong side of God and his life was a total mess.  Now – as she said – she and her son speak the same language.  They both know God is fully sovereign, and 100% in control.

It is not wrong to focus on the events of the world.  It is certainly not wrong to study about the various cults and religious groups who are opposed to Christianity.  Some believe it is never okay to study about cults per se, because what a Christian should be doing is simply studying God’s Word.  I agree that the answers are in God’s Word.  I also believe that by knowing how those from cults think, we are much more able to provide those answers from God’s Word.

I marvel at how far from God people are today.  I recall that President Obama canceled the National Day of Prayer because he did not want to offend anyone (presumably those who are not Christian).  However, he had no problem worshiping with over 50,000 that day in Muslim prayer.  He apparently saw this as not offensive, nor contrary to the biblical principles that this country was built upon.

President Obama is merely representative of many who believe that God does not exist (as the Judeo-Christian God).  If God exists at all, then this God may very well be different things to different people.  Because this thinking has become prevalent, many are completely unable to see how far from center this country has gone.  They fail to recognize the godlessness in many of our leaders today.

If we stop and look around this world of ours, simply focusing on the world itself, we might be very tempted to declare that God is not here.  We may erroneously believe that God is not involved in what happens on this earth, and things are left up to chance.

However, if we look at this world, and then look up, we will soon conclude that God has never abdicated His throne.  If He is on His throne, then He has not given up, or set aside His sovereignty either.

As we continue our study in Islam, and other things that connect with the End Times, leading to the Tribulation, we must never forget that God is sovereign.  He and He alone directs the affairs of men.  There is no one who can stand in His presence, unless He gives them leave to do so.  God is overthrown by no one, including the enemy of our souls.

I would encourage you to read Psalm 2, for it is there that we gain a tremendous picture of God and how He views the efforts of puny man.  We are no kind of threat to God.  He literally laughs at the efforts of foolish men to cast off the “chains” of His sovereignty.  He warns us repeatedly that we should “kiss the Son, lest He be angry with us.”  In order to do that, we need to humble ourselves.  Too many are unable to do so because they think too highly of themselves.

In a world that is in constant turmoil, it is easy to begin focusing on the situation.  When this happens, our eyes are taken away from the Lord of all.  The situation makes us feel angry, or frustrated and if allowed, even hopeless.  Yet, there is nothing hopeless about this time in humanity’s history.  In fact, though things are gearing up for the greatest conflict that has ever existed (or will ever exist), God is STILL in control.  Nothing will happen that does not have the stamp of His approval.

God is sovereign.  He knows all and He controls all.  For the Christian, there is nothing more comforting.  It reminds us who we are, and what our salvation means.  It should also remind us that the time is short and there are many who still need to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ, in order that they might be brought into the Kingdom as well.

I hope this blog has been an encouragement to you.  As I stop to consider God’s eternal rule, based on His sovereignty, I stop and I marvel.  God is good.  He is sovereign, and He will prevail.  Amen?  Amen.
