Suez Canal Earthquake?

February 21, 2011 at 4:55 PM 6 comments

This morning, there was a good deal of interest in an alleged earthquake that occurred near the start of the Suez Canal.  According to Israeli news sources, the quake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale and lasted for 27-minutes.

Not only is that a fairly large number, but earthquakes rarely last longer than a few moments, although they are often followed by many temblors.  When I began doing some research on this, the only real sources I could find were Israeli sources.

Finally, I went to the USGS Web site which reports on earthquakes happening throughout the world.  According to the site, so far today, there have been 34 earthquakes, most of them below 5.0.  However, a few were above the 5.0 mark and so far two of them have registered above the 6.0 level on the Richter scale.  One occurred on the South Island of New Zealand measuring 6.3 and the other occurred just south of the Fiji Islands, measuring 6.4.

Yesterday, February 20th, there were 24 earthquakes recorded throughout the world and the closest one to the Suez Canal occurred below it in the Gulf of Aden, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale. [1]  Since we KNOW this earthquake did occur, then it is clear that part of the story is true – an earthquake took place on February 20th.

Doing a bit more research, it appears that scientists do not generally use the Richter scale as a measurement for the power of an earthquake.  It is outmoded if compared to the Moment Magnitude Scale, however, news medias still rely on the Richter scale measurement because that is what most people know and understand.

How long did the earthquake in the Gulf of Aden last?  According to this mapping – http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/neic_b0001hfg_t.html – within five minutes the tremor would have been felt in the Suez Canal.  In ten minutes, it would have been felt on the West side of the Continent of Africa.

Is it possible that an earthquake was felt in the Suez Canal region?  Since an earthquake did take place in the Gulf of Aden, then it is very possible that what may have been thought to have been an earthquake originating in the Suez Canal area actually happened miles below that, but was felt in that area.

What is the point?  Is God speaking here or is this merely nature taking its due course?  It was reported back in November, 2010 that within a 24-hour period of time, over 35 earthquakes shook that area of the world – the Gulf of Aden.  One individual commented that the quakes in that area are normally highly unlikely. [2]

We are left to draw our own conclusions on this most recent event.  Are we moving toward the Northern Invasion, spoken of by the prophet Ezekiel (Ezekiel 38-39), or is this just nature taking its course?  Regardless of what this most recent earthquake means, the reality seems to be that things are drastically changing in the Middle East.  It is known that Muslim groups and nations in that area would like nothing better than to see Israel eradicated off the map.  We know how many times that has been stated by public officials.

What will happen?  Until it happens, we do not know.  Whether God sent this latest earthquake as a warning to Iran to opt out of their decision to harass Israel or not, we do not know.  It seems like that it would not be far-fetched for God to do something like this as a warning sign.  If God has issued the earthquake (as He says He will during the start of the actual Northern Invasion), it would be for the purpose of getting Iran’s (and the world’s attention).  Can anyone say without equivocation that this was the purpose of this earthquake?  No, but if we consider the fact that nothing happens on or in this earth without God’s foreknowledge and design, it is clear that there is a purpose for it.

The larger question here though is even if this is a sign from God as to His intents and purposes, does anyone actually expect Iran or any other nation (including the current leaders of the United States) to stop and take notice?  It won’t happen.  There are too many ignorant and arrogant people in this world.

I just saw a bumper sticker today that said, “My Goddess Created Your God.”  That about sums up the way people think today.  Ever searching, but never finding, even when they firmly believe they have found the truth.

Earthquakes aside, God is in full control of the events that are playing themselves out in the Middle East and elsewhere today, tomorrow, and the next day.  Though events may surprise us (for instance, the Six-Day War was not specifically foretold in Scripture), nothing takes Him by surprise.  How could they, when He controls all things?

Christians do not need signs to know that God is in charge and His plan is unfolding as it was preordained to unfold.  Christians have the faith necessary to know and understand that God is not only fully in control, but will be glorified in all things, regardless of how things look to us or the world.

    “I live in a bubble of too much work and not enough time to really keep up on anything that is actually reported by the media, so please excuse my relative ignorance” ~ Jeff

    On this one point I would say – no you are not excused. I work full time and care for my elderly parents in my home. I struggle to pay bills, care for my home with no one of able body to help me and fall asleep within two minutes of hitting my pillow. Still, I keep up on what is reported by the media. Being oblivious to the fact that our country is actively being destroyed in front of our eyes is nothing to boast about. Indeed, you reveal yourself as part of the problem. And refusing to acknowledge, or even consider, that we are living in the end times is an even sadder matter, between you and God however. (God 1.0).

    I live in a bubble of too much work and not enough time to really keep up on anything that is actually reported by the media, so please excuse my relative ignorance, but let me get this straight: the good guys are in Israel, propped up by the really good guys in the United States;

    Hi Jeff,

    I have interspersed my comments in between yours (mine are in bold, for everyone else who may be reading this).

    The “good guys” are not in Israel. This is a misnomer that people constantly mistake for truth. I believe Israel should be supported but not because they are supposedly “good,” and the Muslims are supposedly “bad.”

    Israel should be supported solely because God says Israel should be supported (cf. Genesis 12, 15 & 17 for starters). The Bible teaches that ALL have sinned – including you Jeff, and myself – and ALL need Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Those who reject Jesus as Savior and Lord remain in their own sin, which will unfortunately condemn them upon their death.

    In other words, ALL people, Jews and Gentiles (that includes Muslims) NEED Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Those who die without receiving His salvation spend eternity apart from Him.

    Israel is God’s land. Jerusalem is the focal point of this world as far as God is concerned and this is clearly explained in many places in His Word. We support Israel because salvation came from the Jews (Jesus was/is Jewish), and as Paul explains, they have been blinded so that salvation can be extended to Gentiles (cf. Romans 9-11).

    the bad guys are in Iran, because they believe in the update God 3.0 (Allah, as opposed to Yahweh [1.0] or Yeshua [2.0]);

    Ha, ha. Oh, ha, ha. That’s the funniest thing I’ve ever heard. Give me a minute. Ha, ha…hee, hee. Ho ho. Ha.

    Okay, I’m ready now…

    I repudiate in the strongest terms that Allah is THE same as Yahweh, Jehovah, or Jesus. The two do not even compare one iota. The theology (such as it is) of Islam is markedly different from Christianity that even a cave man would understand that difference.

    I would strongly encourage you to do some studying on your own regarding Islam, its origins, its practices, and its goals. It is an ideology based on militant hatred and conquering, all in the name of Allah, their god. As far as I’m concerned, Allah is Satan. Of course, Muslims would disagree and shout for my beheading if they knew that I said that. You won’t tell, will you? Gosh, thanks.

    The absolute goal of Islam is to overcome and control the entire world (which includes you, Jeff). Islam teaches that the more of the world that falls under Islam (either through strong arm military/violent tactics, their religious views, or their politics), the closer they believe the world moves toward the final Mahdi being revealed. They believe this final Mahdi will stamp out all who stand opposed to Islam and it will be at that point, that “justice” will prevail, ushering in world peace. I would also encourage you to study up on Sharia.

    and I’m to believe that a small earthquake in the Gulf of Aden that caused no damage and is about a thousand miles from either Iran or the Suez Canal is a pronouncement of God that Iran shouldn’t be going through the Suez Canal. If someone could just verify all of this for me, I would appreciate it very much. Thank you.

    That’s not what I said. What I essentially stated is that God controls all things, and I find it fascinating that just as Iran opted to move two of their warships up to and through the Suez Canal, an earthquake occurs. Does this mean God sent a warning? Not necessarily. Does it mean He is unaware of what Iran is doing? Not at all.

    In fact, if you take the time to read Ezekiel 38-39, you will read about the Northern Invasion, something that has not yet occurred in history. Could this be right around the corner? Certainly, but it could it also be ten, twenty, or thirty years or more off.

    Anyway, thank you for writing and I hope I’ve answered your question adequately. You need to understand it is not “good guys” vs. “bad guys.” It is God vs. everything else. Which side are you on? His, or your own?

    Oh I found it on Israel National News. The consensus is it was supposed to read 27 seconds. Whew. I feel better. You will notice a lot of other commenters on Israel National News said no earthquake was reported. Very strange. The Red Sea area and Gulf of Aden have been shaking for a few months. But a Gulf of Aden quake shouldn’t be referred to as the “entrance to the Suez Canal” as INN did. That’s technically incorrect and bad journalism (and geography.)

    No earthquake lasts 27 minutes. That’s impossible. I mean, I did have classes in college about earthquakes, I’m not just shooting from the hip. Who reported that? It must have been a typo.

    You know, the USGS often doesn’t report on earthquakes in Israel – regardless of their magnitude. I find this very strange. I e-mailed them to ask them about it and they gave some vague response.
