Juan Williams Comments on NPR Sting

If you cruise around the ‘Net, you’ll find the gamut on opinions related to the NPR undercover sting that captured unfavorable and even anti-Semitic remarks by one of the top dogs at NPR, Ron Schiller. Schiller, who immediately tendered his resignation was quickly followed out the door by Vivian Schiller (no relation).
Among other things, Ron Schiller was caught making bold claims that NPR would actually be better off without federal funding. This is a goldmine for those who would like to see NPR defunded. In fact, in this day and age, there really is no excuse for any news-related bureau to receive any type of government grants or funding. It creates the potential for bias and bias should not be part of any news organization, since their job is to report the news without slanting it. That’s what editorials are for, not the news in general.
However, it was interesting to note some of more caustic remarks made by Schiller during the undercover sting. He had nothing good to say about the Tea Partiers and some pretty specific negatives that flowed from his mouth non-stop. It is clear that for Ron Schiller, he voiced what many politicians would love to say (and some have said). Unfortunately for Schiller, he was caught with his pants down (proverbially speaking) and it cost him his job.
That really won’t matter because like most high-paid execs, they always land on their feet. It’s the little people who have a hard time doing that simply because their fall to the ground is much shorter.
But what is more troubling than what Schiller said is what many have stated about Schiller’s comments. Many have taken the “what’s wrong with what he said?” approach. The really do not see anything wrong with Schiller’s comments.
Juan Williams disagrees…vehemently. Of course, it could easily be said that Williams is simply angry with NPR for firing him. That might be the case, if Williams was still out of a job, but no sooner was he canned from NPR, than FOX News had the good sense to snap him up as a commentator for that network.
I don’t necessarily agree with Williams position in general, but he is a very intelligent man who certainly puts forth his opinion with that same intelligence and level-headedness. This is not often seen in many other editorial commentators, like O’Reilly, or Bill Maher.
At any rate, with this latest debacle at NPR, leading to the ouster of Ron Schiller and Vivian Schiller, Williams had a few things to say that bear repeating here.
“This was an act of incredible condescension,” said Williams. “The rank hypocrisy of his remarks was telling for me. They will say things to your face about how there’s no liberal orthodoxy at NPR, how they play it straight, but now you see it for what it is. They prostitute themselves for money.” [1]
Really? I’ve never heard of such a thing. A news bureau prostituting itself for money? Seriously, it’s pretty obvious that this is the case, even before Ron Schiller was caught on camera saying things that are only voiced behind closed doors.
Williams went on to offer more of his opinion. “Williams said Schiller’s remarks about the Jews dominating the newspaper industry was “outright anti-Semitism,” and labeling Tea Party members “gun-toting” “racists” reveals “their real feelings.” This is how they talk in boardrooms and editorial meetings, explained Williams. “This is how they really feel.” [2]
It’s true. This is how they really do feel and it is tragic that people can lie like this to the American public because they have their own agenda to carve out. In all truth, Americans should be used to this by now because politicians have been lying for years and there seems to be no let up either. If they aren’t lying to our faces, they’re putting on a show with alligator tears, just like Congressman Keith Ellison at today’s terror hearings. Cry me a river, but don’t ever say a disparaging word against a Muslim or Islam.
Schiller had other things to say as well, like how Williams was unceremoniously fired from NPR. “Ron Schiller said he was “proud” of the way Williams was fired, which contradicted the official NPR line where they “regret” they way it was handled. This really struck Williams. “This shows a real lack of remorse … these people say one thing in public, then candidly say I need to see a shrink and they’re proud of what went down … it shows exactly who the villains are.” [3]
Schiller stuck his foot in his mouth. In fact, he shot off his mouth and killed his career at NPR. He made statements that are untrue and anti-Semitic, yet there are many around the Internet who freely agree with the man. They agree with him all the while holding Tea Partiers, Republicans, and conservatives up to ridicule.
It is always bothersome when I hear anti-Semitic remarks and then hear other people say, “What? What’s wrong with what he/she said?” Plenty, but apparently no amount of explanation will clarify the truth for some individuals because they are happily living inside their protective shell, unaware that there are too many people among us who douse themselves with pretty-smelling perfume and cologne, put on that happy face, and show us their best side…in public. Behind closed doors, the pretty perfume goes away, the mask of a smile disappears, and their true personality comes out.
I’m very glad that Rep. King has the guts to go through with the terror hearings, in spite of all the bleeding hearts who think it’s a crime. I’m glad someone has the guts to go undercover to catch people like Ron Schiller being himself. I’m also glad that more people seem to be waking up to the fact that all is not what it appears to be in our government.
I’m not really sure we can do anything about it, but legal and law-abiding resistance is always a good thing. Without it, we simply blend in with the crowd.
So here is the problem.
