Are We IN the Actual Tribulation?

July 17, 2012 at 9:26 AM

There is much talk of the Tribulation/Great Tribulation these days and rightly so.  Some are convinced it has begun and we are in it.  Others believe that it won’t begin until one specific event occurs first, which does not appear to have happened yet.  Still others do not believe that there will be a Tribulation/Great Tribulation at all because they believe it already occurred in AD 70 with Rome’s destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple.

With everything that is taking place throughout the world, it most certainly seems as though this planet is in trouble.  We are experiencing droughts as never before in recent history throughout the United States.  Floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, volcanic activity, and much more seems to be the new norm for this globe.  People are rightly asking what is happening?

But the question I want to answer is whether or not the Tribulation/Great Tribulation has actually begun and is there a way to know for sure whether this is the case?

I don’t have time or space to go through the entirety of Scripture here, but I would like to highlight two sections of Scripture that I believe shine the light on this subject and definitively answer the question.

Daniel 9 is the chapter that opens the doors to the concept of the 70 weeks.  Here we learn that the angel reveals to Daniel what will transpire and the time frame in which it will occur.  When the angel gets down to verses 24 – 27 in our English Bibles, the answer – to me at least – becomes clear.

By the way, I take the time to really delve into this subject in a few of my books.  One in particular is called Between Weeks and deals with the specifics of the 70 weeks.  All of my books are available FREE of charge to anyone who wishes to download them as PDF documents.  Simply go to my website here: and then click on “Books (All)” from the menu on the left.  Once that page opens, you will see the covers of all my books and you simply then need to click on the individual cover to go to that particular page highlighting that specific book.  Once there, look for the PDF icon in the lower left portion of the page.  Click it and the PDF will open up inside your browser, allowing you to save it to your computer.  There is absolutely no obligation and you do not need to “register” or send me any information.  Simply download any (or all) book you choose and it’s yours.

While Daniel 9:24-27 essentially summarizes the totality of weeks, I would like to draw your attention to verse 27.  This verse says this:  “And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.”

Some individuals believe that the “he” referenced here is actually referring to Jesus Christ.  I don’t believe this is the case simply because of the rules of grammar.  The “he” here must be referring to the closest antecedent, which in this case is the “the people of the prince who is to come…” (v. 26; emphasis added) is referencing someone other than Jesus.  That particular prince – I believe – is the Antichrist.  If he is actually on this earth now, the world does not know his identity and that will not happen until he does something that is listed for us in verse 27.  Then, his identity will become clear.

Referring back to verse 27, it begins by telling us that this same “he” will broker a covenant with the many for one “week.”  The “many” here is referencing Daniel’s people, Israel.  In other words, the leaders of Israel will come alongside the Antichrist and agree to the covenant that he is attempting to create between Israel and the surrounding Arab nations in order to gain peace in that region of the world.  This of course has been attempted by every U.S. president since before Jimmy Carter, but has never worked out.  Something has always gone wrong.

However, the coming Antichrist will be successful here in brokering a covenant between Israel’s leaders and the Arab nations.  This is what will set this coming man of sin apart from all other contenders.  It is also – I believe – the event that starts the Tribulation off.

Years ago, I recall reading books that taught that the Rapture would be the event that kicked off the Tribulation.  I’m not even sure why that opinion was given legs because it really is not supported by Scripture.  It’s not the Rapture that starts the Tribulation, but the covenant that is brokered by the Antichrist between Israel and the Arabs.

If we look to the book of Revelation, specifically chapter five, we see the Throne room of God.  There, we see a type of pageantry occurring with God holding a book of sorts.  This turns out to be the seven-sealed scroll and initially, it does not appear that anyone is found worthy to open it.  Many scholars believe – and I would agree – that this book ultimately represents the title-deed to earth.

Even though it looks bleak that no one is going to be able to actually take and open the seven-sealed scroll (book), One individual is found to be worthy:  the Lamb.  Found worthy, He takes the book and break the seals that have kept it closed.

Revelation 6:1-2 shows what happens when the Lamb breaks the first seal of this seven-sealed book.  “Then I saw when the Lamb broke one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures saying as with a voice of thunder, ‘Come.’ I looked, and behold, a white horse, and he who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.”

I believe that this individual on a white horse is the exact same individual of Daniel 9:26-27 who brokers a covenant with Israel.  Notice he comes riding a white horse with a crown and he goes out to conquer.  He has a bow but no mention of arrows.  He is out to conquer but not through war.  Others will do that.  This individual is out to conquer politically and his first stop is the nation of Israel.

Once Israel enters into this seven-year covenant of Daniel 9:27, the Tribulation begins because God’s patience with Israel will have run out.  It is now time for their trial by fire.  By signing this covenant with Antichrist, Israel will have literally signed a deal with Satan himself (since Antichrist will essentially be Satan incarnate; cf. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12).  Imagine it.  The very nation that God created specifically for the purposes of bringing His salvation into the world will not only turn against God in idolatry, but will actually turn toSatan for their deliverance from their enemies!  This is one of the reasons that the Tribulation is also referred to as the time of Jacob’s trouble (cf. Jeremiah 30).

Once Israel steps over that invisible (yet clearly defined) line, entering into an agreement with Satan, all hell breaks loose on this planet.  God moves to break Israel’s will and stubbornness so that they will worship Him and Him alone.

As far as I’m concerned, I believe I can safely say that the Tribulation has not yet begun.  While that gives me comfort, it doesn’t give me a great deal of comfort because things on this planet have become exceedingly trying.  Everywhere I look, persecution against Christians and Christianity is at an all time high, especially in areas of the world like India, Indonesia, North Africa, and of course, the Middle East.  Wherever Islam rises, Christians suffer.

Beyond this, food prices are on the constant rise.  Now we learn that the U.S. is suffering through one of its worst droughts and because of that, we can expect food prices to continue to increase.  Gas prices for the longest time have been high, though there is a bit of a respite now.  This will likely change depending upon what happens this November.

Beyond all of this, the leaders of our country (the U.S.) seem to delight in wanting to give sovereignty enjoyed by U.S. citizens to the U.N.  Moreover, since Mr. Obama took office, illegal aliens (and especially Muslims) have been given the green light to come here illegally and remain.

There is so much that is transpiring, it is no wonder that many believe the Tribulation has begun.  It seems clear to me though that as bad as things are becoming (and I believe will no doubt become far worse), the worst of it has not yet begun.  It will not begin until the Antichrist steps forward and nails down a seemingly secure covenant with Israel for seven years.  That has not happened and prophetically, it seems to me that this must occur before the Tribulation can officially begin.
