Media is At It Again…KPHO

Wow, who would have thought that network affiliates (or any news bureau for that matter) would stoop to this kind of chicanery?  Apparently, a CBS affiliate out of Phoenix, AZ (KPHO), ran a lower-third graphic for 17-seconds on October 19th, showing Mr. Obama as the winner in the upcoming November 6th election.  How does THAT happen?

It is this type of chicanery that causes people to believe that major elections like this are rigged.  When the media does something this asinine, it simply tends to confirm what many believe about the election process.

Pat Dollard brought this up in a column recently when he noted the event that transpired on live television.  This is simply absurd, yet it happened.

The station’s general manager had no comment when Dollard published his article.  A explanation – or sorts – was given by Michele Wallace, who stated that the incident “was the result of a mistake made with a test graphic.” [1] That’s ludicrous.  It makes no sense whatsoever, but so far, that is the only explanation presented.

She details the incident by stating, “On Friday October 19thduring a test of KPHO- CBS 5’s election returns software we inadvertently aired a test graphic for about 15 seconds in an episode of Peoples Court,” Wallace said. “The mistake was caught quickly and taken off the screen. With the election about 2 weeks away, the TV station routinely tests its equipment to ensure our viewers have the very latest’s results on election night.  We regret the error and apologize to any viewer who was confused by the mistake.” [2]

So, they simply chose to run a “test” graphic that announces Mr. Obama winning the upcoming November 6th election, huh?  We are to believe that there is no other reason at all.  There’s no conspiracy here, folks.  Move along.  Nothing to see.  The problem is that the graphic was entirely believable and yes, even possible.  It showed 99% of precincts reporting with Mr. Obama winning 43% of the votes, to Romney’s 40%.

Why did the station run a graphic stating Mr. Obama won?  Why not run one stating Romney won?  Can you imagine how incensed the White House would be if they learned of this “test” run, touting Romney as the winner?

It is clear since the very first debate that the numbers favoring Mr. Obama have been on the serious decline.  Romney is up across the board and in at least some cases, he is ahead of Mr. Obama by nearly double digits.  A number of websites relating the situation with the electoral college votes shows a neck and neck tie between the two candidates.  Others show that Mr. Obama is slightly ahead.  In yet other cases, Romney leads.

I truly wish the media would stay out of this because it does nothing good at all.  During the 2008 election, the media began calling it really early on and even before the voting started, the wave of emotional reaction in favor of Mr. Obama increased to the point where it became completely obvious that the media was certainly trying to make things happen.

When the media (in any election) calls things early on, it creates the notion that there is no need for anyone to continue on down to the polling places.  It’s virtually over; don’t waste the time.  So people think that their vote is a waste of time, so why bother?

The media needs to report on the news, not create it as they go.  This is what has been happening over the years.  The media has become far more dominant in how Americans perceive each election, with the media calling the shots in many cases.

Is this another one of those cases where the media has completely overstepped its boundaries?  I think so, but their explanation – like many explanations coming out of the Oval Office regarding Libya – leaves people wondering…and questioning.  However, in spite of the additional questions, there is “no comment” from the Obama Administration, just as there is no new comment coming from KPHO.

The explanation we’ve been given about a “test” graphic does not answer the question.  The larger question is why the station decided it felt the need to RUN a test graphic of any kind in the first place?  It would be wrong to run one highlighting Romney as the winner, just as it was wrong to run one highlighting Mr. Obama as the winner since the election has not occurred yet and the only votes that have been cast are by people who have absentee ballots.

This whole thing stinks and why shouldn’t it?  For a long time now, people have been questioning whether or not the people actually decide who will be the next president.  As long as the “electoral college” remains in tact, all manner of abuses can occur.

People want to change things.  They want to add a third-party and revamp or get rid of both the Dems and Repubs.  That’s not as easy as one might think because there is a tremendous amount of money involved in keeping these parties.  It would be easier and maybe even more necessary to eliminate the electoral college, yet the same problem exists.  It’s money and power and power and money that seems to control many aspects of American elections.

When news bureaus make the asinine mistake of doing what KPHO-CBS 5 did a few days ago, no one believes their explanation.  It simply does not pan out.  There is absolutely NO need of any kind to run a “test” graphic.  Besides, that could have easily been done “in-house” without it going out on the air, if that’s what they were really trying to accomplish.  The fact that it ran for 17-seconds tells me quite a bit.  In TV land, that’s an eternity.  A 15-second commercial can cost thousands and thousands of dollars to run on TV, depending of course if it is national or local.  In essence, KPHO ran a 15-second (plus) commercial showing the results of the upcoming election and Mr. Obama didn’t even have to pay for it!  Again, imagine the anger had it shown Romney as the winner.

Look, I have friends in entertainment and TV news.  You don’t make mistakes like this and you certainly don’t make mistakes like this that last for 17-seconds.  While it can happen if the engineer or production manager has an axe to grind with the station, it’s not going to remain on the air for that length of time.  Someone needs to be fired at KPHO and I have a sneaking suspicion that if the graphic had shown Romney as the winner, that person would already be gone.

The news media needs to report the news, not create it!  See the link below for the entire article by Pat Dollard.
