Sea of “Blood” in the Gulf

A Bloody Mess, but Not Blood...

To hear some Christians tell it, the explosion in the Gulf, which has caused a major oil leak that seemingly goes unchecked, is one of the judgments of God found within the confines of the Tribulation.

The reference to this judgment is found in Revelation 8:8, which states:

“And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood”

This second angel blows the second trumpet and the judgment associated with that trump is released.  It just so happens to be a great mountain burning with fire that was tossed into the sea.  The result is one-third of the sea becomes blood.

A couple of things to point out here that should (hopefully) clarify things, at least for those who are interested in clarification.

• the sea turns to blood because a burning mountain lands in the ocean
• the sea turns to BLOOD, the text does not say it becomes LIKE blood

I don’t recall a burning mountain landing in the ocean recently that might have caused the oil leak, does anyone else?  The biblical text says that it is a burning mountain – which obviously must be some type of asteroid – that lands in the ocean and causes one-third of the sea to turn to blood.  Why?  I’m assuming because things DIE as a result of this “burning mountain” coming in contact with the ocean.  Do we have to assume though?  No, we do not have to assume.

The very next verse in Revelation 8 states this:  “And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.”

So it could very well be that one-third of the sea turns to blood because one-third of the creatures die.  There is an excellent chance that the blood will leave their bodies and will empty into the sea.  Stop and consider that one-third of all sea life dying represents a tremendous amount of sea life!

We also see that one-third of all the ships were destroyed.  Huh, how can that be?  That’s just weird, isn’t it?  Not when you stop to consider that if a huge mountain that was burning (aka a large burning asteroid) landed in the ocean, not only would the gases and chemicals it gives off kill quite a bit, but it would also very likely create a very large TSUNAMI!  A tsunami of any great size would capsize and sink all vessels in its path.  All ships on the ocean in that vicinity and for possibly hundreds of miles in radius would be affected.

Now, has there been a burning asteroid that has landed in the ocean in the not-too-distant past?  Not that I’m aware of.  If you know of one, please pass along the information.  There has been no tsunami, and nowhere have I read about one-third of all sea life dying and one-third of all ships being destroyed.

From way above earth, the oil slick created by the leak from the oil rig, tends to look red.  It looks like blood, but the truth of the matter is that it is OIL, not blood.  Certainly, it will continue to affect sea life, and the water in general.  As it hits the shores, it will also affect people, as it has already affected people’s livelihoods for that area.  However, let’s keep in mind that this leak was caused by man’s stupidity and greed, not a large asteroid hitting the ocean.

Beyond all of this, if we understand Daniel 9:24-27, it should be clear (but it isn’t to many) that the final “week” (the coming last seven years known as the Tribulation) can only begin when the Antichrist signs the covenant with Israel and other nations in the Middle East.  It is that event that begins the Tribulation, the final seven years of humanity’s history and the final Gentile-led kingdom.

We cannot read the newspaper, or watch TV and try to make events fit with the events on God’s prophetic calendar.  Either they are of God or they are not.  The crisis in the Gulf has nothing to do with an asteroid that screamed out of space through earth’s atmosphere and landed in the ocean.  This judgment of Revelation 8, like all other judgments connected with the Tribulation cannot happen until the Tribulation actually begins.  We are not there yet, but I would not be surprised to learn that it happens sooner than later.

What I also think is interesting (and it’s possibly because I love a good conspiracy), is that no sooner had Obama indicated he was thinking of allowing offshore drilling than something like this happens.  Either he had no intention of pursuing the offshore drilling thing (possibly knowing that something might happen with BP’s oil rig), or he did intend to pursue it, but with this latest fiasco, it would be ludicrous to move ahead with those plans.

So where does that leave us?  The oil leak catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico leaves us still on this side of the Tribulation, and it looks like we will even be more reliant on foreign oil to not only survive, but will be at their mercy as far as costs too.
