Politics Trumps Sound Policy?

It’s interesting, but when some officials don’t get their way, they moan and groan about politics, but when they get their way, its sound policy.

Case in point: our Federal Gov’t has decided that it’s not that important to worry about the potential sales of automatic weapons to drug cartels via individuals who buy them in the southern states and cart them off through the border – or try to do so.

An article states, “The decision to delay the proposed federal rule, which comes amid fresh reports that rival cartels are waging murderous gun battles in the once peaceful city of Guadalajara, drew an unusually sharp rebuke from Mexico’s ambassador to the United States.” [1]

Mexican ambassador stated, “It is certainly disappointing that politics trumps sound policy.” [2]

The ATF did a study and found that any guns being smuggled into Mexico from the U.S. is nearly non-existent compared to the weapons they smuggle in from other areas of the world, especially South America.  In fact, many of the guns that wind up on the streets of the United States illegally, come from the same place.  This fact makes it that much more ridiculous when politicians attempt to further squelch the rights of Americans regarding guns.

But that aside for now, what is absolutely astounding is how our Federal Gov’t arrives at its decisions.  I’m actually in agreement with them on this latest decision (which scares me), but this same Federal Gov’t decided it was worth it to sue Arizona for doing something to protect its own states from the multitudes of illegal aliens coming in from Mexico.  This same government allowed Mexico and other Latin American countries to join that lawsuit.

Sound policy?  Show me sound policy of suing Arizona when it is clear that the Federal Gov’t refuses to do anything to stem the tide of illegal aliens entering this country.  It is obvious that they could care less.

The Feds are also aware that spending time and money to try to track weapons in four of the southern states that may end up in Mexico is just that – a waste of money and resources.  I’m sure that President Obama would rather add that money that would be spent in that venture to rebuild another mosque or two around the world.  Or, maybe he feels the need to give Lebanon more money, over the 300 million already given to rebuild the Gaza Strip after Israel destroyed some of it because they were tired of being shelled by Hamas and others in Lebanon.

On top of this, in spite of the fact that a FEDERAL judge has ruled much of Obamacare illegal – unconstitutional – our Federal Gov’t just stated today that they are moving ahead with the implementation of the healthcare package.  Wow, is that amazing or what?  With 27 states onboard to sue our Federal Gov’t, I’m thinking that the only thing that President Obama cares about is spending as much money as possible from the Federal coffers.  One way or another, he will bring the United States to its knees.

Liberals don’t see it (or won’t admit it).  Ultra-rich people could care less because their wealth will be secure in spite of what Obama’s intentions turn out to be.

The reality appears to be that our Federal Gov’t is doing precious little to get us out of the ditch that we are in.  Even if it is Bush’s fault (which I disagree with), the fact remains that Obama’s top priority should be to help this country’s economy, not hurt it.

He said he would not raise taxes.  In fact, he was emphatic about it during his election campaign, but he no sooner gets elected and decides that what this country needs is a healthcare package that will supposedly give everyone healthcare…at a cost of trillions in additional tax dollars.  Sounds like taxes are going up to me.

When he first got into office, he barely noticed the Republicans at all and it was obvious he refused to work with them.  It was only after the midterm elections this past November that he realized he needed to at least pretend that he had something in common with them.

In spite of all this, there are people who believe that Obama has done a great job.  I must be blind, because I simply do not see it.  In fact, I do not see a great deal of good in the past few presidents.  I’m probably becoming jaded, but I’m finding it increasingly difficult to believe anything that politicians say, yet some people have no problem with it.  They hear his State of the Union address and they go, “Cool.  Obama says things are getting better!”  Show me the car fax!

The problem with our politicos is that they focus on things that are either too big or too small.  They also see their own pet projects as THE project that will turn this country around.  Sorry, but  that’s not true.

The thing that would turn our country around is for the Federal Gov’t to stand down and allow the states to do what the U.S. Constitution has given them the power to do – govern the residents of those states.  When all is said and done, the Federal Gov’t was created to protect and defend the individual states, not dictate to them.

Our government has gotten way too big.  It needs serious downsizing, but the saddest part is that no matter who becomes president in the future, I seriously doubt that the Federal Gov’t will be able to be downsized, irrespective of the best intentions of the Commander-in-Chief.

The Federal Gov’t has become a monster that cannot be reined in.  It has taken on a life of its own and it will not submit to domestication or taming.  What if – looking ahead – the President of the United States decided that it was necessary to declare Martial Law?  If that happens and unfortunately, it probably will one day, all individual rights except the most basic will be set aside.

Can you see it?  Law enforcement officials, together with National Guard and military troops will patrol our society.  A curfew will be instated and enforced.  Looters or even anyone out past curfew will be shot on sight.  It will become a completely different world.

An I.D. card (probably a Federal I.D. card) will be issued to every individual and without it, you won’t be able to travel from one city to the next, never mind getting on a plane.  The government will believe they have the right under extended areas of the Patriot Act (or something similar – probably the “If You See Something, Say Something Act for American Patriotism), to detain, question, dictate to, jail, and anything else they want to do to ensure “national security.”  The problem of course, is that this national security will see every American citizen as the potential enemy.

I can picture numerous scenarios occurring in the near future that will bring the fantasies of science fiction movies to real life.  I’ve seen so many movies – and so have you – where cities of the future are filled with people who have extremely restrictive lifestyles…and they always have an underground made up of freedom fighters.

It is tragic, but I do not believe that the science fiction realm of 2002’s Equilibrium or Terminator Salvation, or fill in the blank, will remain in that realm for too much longer.  We are fast approaching a day when the storylines in those movies will become the storyline of real life.

This is what the book of Revelation tells us when it speaks of that one, final world dictator, who will make it impossible for people to buy or sell without his mark firmly embedded in people’s bodies (cf. Revelation 13).  This coming “man of sin” (cf. 2 Thessalonians 2), will change everything as he grabs control of the world with power, charisma, intelligence that supersedes all other individuals, and with signs and wonders.

During that time, there will be an underground of freedom fighters, but they will be fighting for something infinitely greater than food, or physical freedom.  They will be fighting for eternal freedom found only in Jesus Christ and the salvation He has made available through the cross.

Politics of the future are going to get really ugly.  How can they not?  What is coming is the darkest tunnel that humanity will ever walk through.  The Light at the other end is none other than Jesus Himself and the darkness will scatter like so many cockroaches when someone turns the light in the kitchen on.

The day is coming.  I hope your faith is in the One who grants life to those who trust in His ability to save.
