Playing the Race Card Against Mr. Obama

A day or so ago, I received this comment from someone who responded to a comment I had left in response to someone else about Mr. Obama’s eligibility to be the president of the United States.
This entire discussion is irrelevant. A person is a natural-born citizen of the U.S. if ONE parent is a citizen. It doesn’t matter where you were born. McCain was born in Panama, so why don’t any of you question his citizenship? Gee, probably because he is white. I think the whole lot of you trying to get Obama out of office are racists. Heaven forbid we should have a black Democrat president, right? Don’t think people don’t see through your arguments.
This type of comment is disheartening on a number of levels. It is as if people are not allowed to critique the quality or lack thereof of our current president’s job so far. It means that if people comment against Mr. Obama, then it is obvious that the only reason they are doing so is because they are racists.
What I tried to explain to the individual quoted above is that while it is not that difficult to become a citizen of the United States, the requirements for being president are more rigorous. I also tried to explain the meaning of the term “natural-born citizen,” as it applies to our constitution. We know exactly what the term means since it was adopted as is from the parliamentary procedures of Great Britain by our founding fathers.
I also explained that McCain is considered a natural-born citizen of the U.S. because though he was born on Panama, he was born ON a U.S. military base and as such, that military base was considered American soil at the time.
No word on whether or not the individual accepted my reasoning. Probably too blinded by the idea that she believes anyone who criticises Mr. Obama must be a racist. That’s really convenient…if you’re a politician of color. White individuals have no such label to hide behind.
Comments like the ones quoted above are off-putting because they are not true and they are essentially designed to shut people up. Of course, that is completely unfair and ridiculous.
Consider all the previous presidents we have had – all of whom have been white. No one abstained from critiquing, or criticising these individuals. Of course, since race was not an issue, the issue became “party politics,” which is not as bad or even close to being a racist.
I would submit that THE reason Mr. Obama was elected to the office of president is due solely to the fact that he is not white. However, if we look closely, it cannot be denied that his mother was WHITE and his father, BLACK. So what is Mr. Obama since he is not really one or the other?
The fact that Mr. Obama is part-Black does not enter into the picture, at least for me. When I discuss aspects of Mr. Obama’s political career, including his most recent stint as president, I am looking at the following:
- what he does
- what he says
- how he leads (or not)
It is important for me to understand first of all, what Mr. Obama says, but immediately following that is the question of whether or not he DOES what he says he will do. There are numerous examples of Mr. Obama saying one thing and doing another. Is this something that only applies to Mr. Obama? Of course not, but at present, he is the one sitting in the Oval Office.
Mr. Obama ran for president on the platform “Change is Coming.” He never really said what type of change, however, those of us who began looking into his background quickly found something disturbing. He is one of those “progressives,” which is merely code for Socialist. Red flag number 1.
Then, when we look at his voting record, it turns out that Mr. Obama has an interesting record when it comes to abortion. He has been and continues to be in favor of allowing women to terminate their pregnancies as often as they become pregnant, even into the late second trimester. Red flag number 2.
There have been a number of times Mr. Obama has sneakily circumvented the U. S. Constitution, ignoring Congress, and not even bother to tell the American people what he was doing. Libya is a case in point. His “coalition” is about half the size that George W. Bush’s coalition was just prior to the Iraq “kinetic military campaign.” Moreover, Bush spent a good deal of time working with the UN to gain approval every step of the way prior to entering into Iraq.
Beyond this, Bush asked for and got Congressional approval and he took plenty of time to sell his ideas and goals to the American people. Did all Americans agree with Bush? Of course not, but that is beside the point. Bush took the time to lay things out and go through proper channels before sending troops into Iraq.
Mr. Obama on the other hand has a coalition of roughly 16 countries, just half of Bush’s. He spent no time working with Congress to gain their approval for going into Libya militarily. Moreover, he never took the time to even try to explain what he was doing in Libya to the American people until AFTER he had already sent troops in.
Mr. Obama also lied about his intentions with Libya. He basically told the press that he believed the United States would have an advisory role with the coalition forces with respect to Libya. The very next day, when the military action took place, the U.S. had the first planes out there. I thought we were going to assume an advisory role?
After about a week, Mr. Obama announced to the world (finally) that he believed he would be able to hand over the reins to the coalition. So far, that has not really happened. This also means that U.S. forces are under the command of other countries, not the U.S. Commander-in-Chief.
Mr. Obama has touted the idea that the U.S. needed to be involved in the Libyan situation because of humanitarian efforts. When Bush said this, he was roundly ridiculed. Everyone said he went in there because of oil and other resources.
Libya produces millions of barrels of oil each day, but Mr. Obama insists by ignoring it, that oil has nothing to do with Libya; that it’s merely humanitarian. There is a problem here because someone is either really naive, or lying.
I could list time after time when Mr. Obama has completed impeachable offenses, but what would it matter? Those who love the man will continue to love the man and will also continue to believe that the only reason I am making these comments is based on race.
The race card gets played way too often today. The problem with this is that when racism actually occurs, people are becoming blind to it. It is so easy to play the race card and it happens too often today.
Does anyone really believe that O.J. Simpson was innocent of murdering two people? I have not personally met anyone who believes he was innocent. What was it that gave Simpson his freedom? It was when one of his lawyers played the race card. From that point on, it was a losing battle for the prosecution.
Years ago, when I was living in the state of New York, a young girl by the name of Tawana Brawley claimed she had been kidnapped by white police officers, held at gunpoint, raped, and racial epithets were written on her body.
In spite of her testimony, not only was there not one shred of physical evidence to support her claims, but there was ample evidence to prove the innocence of the police officers who were on trial. During the process, Al Sharpton made his initial grab for glory and jumped on the bandwagon to ride the chariot of racism to its end.
Though the whole situation came crashing down on Brawley and those who stood with her (including Sharpton), no apologies were ever issued and Brawley herself never retracted her charges, even on the day she died from a car accident.
There have been many LEGITIMATE cases of racism in this country and elsewhere. Making them up only hurts the cases of actual racism.
People have a right to praise or condemn the actions of any elected official, even if that official has a different ethnicity than the person praising or condemning. To try to cut off the dialogue by claiming racism is not only asinine, but completely counterproductive to the processes build into our democratic society.
I will agree that there is NO room for racism anywhere in this world. However, before leveling that charge, people should at least attempt to find proof of it. Criticising our elected politicians of color does not automatically equal racism.
It’s a nice try from the left, but it falls flat.
