The Coming Government Shutdown?

The Federal Gov’t says it will shutdown if a budget cannot be reached by Congress soon.  Of course, everyone, including the president is concerned about the possibility that people will not be able to visit national parks. That’s right, Mr. Obama actually stated that as a major concern during his time with Rev. Al (Sharpton) recently.

You know, I think this country has bigger things to worry about than whether or not people inside or outside the United States will be able to visit our national parks if the gov’t shuts down.  Maybe you’re one that is severely concerned over whether or not you’ll be able to hug a redwood, but the truth is that we have a national budget that has been spiraling out of control and people like Harry Reid want to continue to fund Planned Parenthood, an organization that specializes in killing the unborn.  In truth, they should rename their organization something like “Planned Death for the Innocent.”  While they may do a few things every once in a while besides kill babies, the bulk of their financial intake is from abortions, period.

So Harry Reid wants to block any effort to defund Planned Parenthood.  He says it is unconscionable what the GOP is attempting to do and he will not allow it.  You know why?  Because of the people who put him and keep him in office, that’s why.

What the GOP is trying to do is cut spending.  Defunding both Planned Parenthood and NPR is a good idea, especially given the fact that my tax dollars are being used to kill babies as well as support a “public” broadcasting system that does not speak for me because of their bias.

So if the gov’t shuts down, what will happen?  “Essential services, including the Military, Medicare, Social Security, FBI, Border Agents, Aircraft Controllers, and many other personnel and services stay on the job and continue to get paid.” [1]

Our gov’t has experienced six shutdowns between the years 1977 and 1980.  During that time, Federal workers did not get paid, however, once the gov’t went back into business, they received their back pay.  “The first Clinton-era government shutdown led to the furlough of about 800,000 federal employees, according to CRS. The second shutdown furloughed about 284,000 federal employees. An untold number of federal contractors were also impacted. The federal government doesn’t track the number of contractors employed by agencies.” [2]

So what is affected (besides national park closures) if our gov’t shuts down?

  1. Certain gov’t health care facilities will be affected like the CDC and the National Institute of Health.
  2. The ATF will not process firearms and explosive applications.
  3. Bankruptcy case applications will be suspended.
  4. Border Patrol will not hire during this time.
  5. Delinquent childcare support cases will be delayed.
  6. Visas and passport application processing will be delayed which will result in money lost to tourism.
  7. Military individuals will see a reduction in health care, financial, welfare, and travel services.
  8. Some federal contracts will be affected.

While this will cost money, for the most part, it will be made up after the gov’t gets back up and running.

So who is at fault for the coming potential shutdown?  The Democrats?  The GOP?  Nope.  Mr. Obama.  The president of the United States is supposed to be the person who brings the warring factions together, helping BOTH sides compromise.  The ineffective nature of our commander-in-chief is seen in just about everything he does (and he has the temerity to announce he is running for a second term as if this country could survive that!).  He is about as able to bring rival factions together like he was able to bring peace to the Middle East.

President Obama, far from being all things to all people, takes sides.  He is vehement in his positions and as bad as Harry Reid when it comes to being willing to give and take.  He is only willing to take, not give.

The GOP wants to cut funding from programs that do not need it and should not rely on our government for their services.  If a person wants an abortion, my tax dollars should not have to pay for it.

We see people constantly protesting the war – they don’t want their taxes paying for something with which they do not agree.  They have the right to protest.  I have the right to protest the fact that my tax dollars make it possible for hundreds of thousands of unborn babies to be killed each year.  I don’t like it and I hate the thought that some of the taxes I pay are used for murder.

I don’t like the fact that NPR receives some of my tax dollars, an organization that while stating they are unbiased are far from it.  In fact, I can think of no news bureau these days that IS unbiased and it does not matter if it is on the right or the left.  Everyone has a slant and that is the fact of the matter.

People routinely come down on FOX News for “lying.”  Apparently, to hear these people tell it, just about everything that comes out of the mouth of FOX News is somehow connected to a lie.  That of course, implies that ABC, NBC, CBS, and others are all above-board.  Really?

In a recently declassified document, it clearly proved that both the FBI and ABC News clearly knew that behind the Timothy McVeigh Oklahoma City bombing were Muslim terrorists.  Funny how we did not hear about that.  I don’t recall ABC News explaining that and as far as I know, only VcVeigh and his co-conspirator were ever tried.  There was never a mention of any kind of terrorists at all, except those two.

People who believe that our news bureaus are unbiased are either extremely naive or simply stupid.  There is no such thing as unbiased news reporting these days simply because everything is based on the almighty system of ratings.

Getting back to the point at hand, will the gov’t shutdown?  Possibly.  If it does, will that mean the end of the world?  Nope.  It will mean a delay in some services and a loss of revenue in others.

Come on, Mr. President, it’s time to pony up and be a leader.  You cannot simply side with the Democrats and expect the GOP to do all the giving.  The budget needs to be cut and in spite of Harry Reid’s rhetoric, I don’t see him offering any tangible ways to actually cut the budget.

This is no surprise since the budget last year was hard to come by and at that point, the Democrats had solid majorities in both the House and the Senate.  They could not blame it on the GOP then.  Now that the GOP has a majority in the House, it’s easy (though unfair and untrue) to lay the blame at their feet.
