How Should a Christian Vote?

You have to admit that in today’s political arena, it is extremely difficult for Christians. We know that a strong conservative Christian has absolutely no chance of being elected to the office of president of the United States, unless of course, God decides to make that happen.
However, in today’s world, a Christian would find it very difficult gaining the necessary votes. Consider the issues of gay rights, abortion, Islam, big government, taxes, and all the rest that would pit that Christian against the electorate.
Atheists would not vote for a Christian. The idea scares them and from their perspective, I can see why. After all, they view Christians as individuals who have little to no grasp on reality, so why would you want a person like that in the highest office in the land?
Agnostics would probably not vote for a Christian either. It’s possible Jews would want nothing to do with a person who is a Christian. It’s also very likely that other Christians would nit-pick that Christian to death. There are some within Christendom who do not believe Christians should be involved in politics at all. There are others who believe that voting is fine, but a career in politics is just not a good idea.
Moreover, because of the many factions and denominations within Christendom, every Christian would hold the magnifying glass or microscope over that potential Christian candidate. Does he/she believe like I believe? Do they believe Scripture teaches a Trinity? Do they believe Jesus was fully God and fully Man? What is their view on abortion? Are they strong enough against issues like gay rights, abortion, and other things? What denomination are they affiliated with and do I agree or disagree with that denomination?
We can see that it would not take long for a lot of Christians to have problems with individuals running for office who run on the “I’m a Christian” ticket. So I’m very serious when I ask the question, “Who does a Christian vote for?” It’s an important question.
I have voted for people in the past that I have thought were Christians, but it turned out to be a big question mark. What if they are simply “moral” people? Well gee, according to the Bible, no one is really good and any semblance of morality that people have is still filthiness as far as God is concerned. In other words, our morals (in the flesh) do not impress God one bit. We need a complete makeover – death into life. That only comes from Him.
By rights then, as a Christian, I should not vote for Romney because I do not agree with his theology. I’m told that Rick Perry is not truly a Christian, so he should not get my vote.
I have no idea about Michelle Bachmann, who at one time dabbled in witchcraft, but says that’s behind her. Other candidates who at the least, seem to be moral individuals, don’t support Israel.
Again, I will ask the question: “Who does a Christian vote for?” First of all, I think it is impossible – absolutely impossible – to find a candidate that I fully like and agree with in all areas unless they think just like I do. I don’t see anyone like that who is currently running for president. Second, even if I did see someone like that, should I trust them? We all know that politicians can change their spots on a dime and give you nine cents change.
I honestly have to say that I do not know as much about any of the candidates who are running as I would like to know. I have to go by what I see and what I hear. The people I really want to run – Allen West and possibly Chris Christie – aren’t interested in running, so I have to make my choice from the candidates who are running.
I hear all sorts of things. I read all sorts of things. I hear lies, innuendo, and presumably, the truth about all of the candidates.
What makes it very difficult today is that two main issues – abortion and gay rights – seem to take up the lion’s share of the press. Christine O’Donnell walked off Piers Morgan’s show recently because he kept pressing her about her views on gay marriage. Why is that? It’s because the left loves to bait the right on things like this because it destroys their momentum. As far as I know, O’Donnell isn’t even running for anything, but she’s associated with the Tea Party so that makes her fair game.
What is a Christian supposed to do when asked questions about gay rights and abortion? Clearly, we should answer the questions honestly and as soon as we do – BAM! – we are out of the race. That’s what the left loves to do, as if those two issues make up all of the important issues facing America today.
Why can’t the left ask conservative candidates about how they would fix the economy? No, they’d rather quote something Michelle Bachmann said about submitting to her husband, because they can bait her into “showing her true colors” that have nothing whatsoever with the way she might fix the economy. But instead of asking her THAT question, let’s focus on her personal beliefs.
So who does a Christian vote for in any election, much less a presidential one? For the past few years, I’ve been voting for the lesser of all evils because that’s all there was on the ballot.
Now, we have a few individuals who appear to be conservative, may be able to fix America’s economy, and may change the way the United States relates to Israel. But how do I know that they will follow through with any of their promises (assuming they are eventually asked questions that will allow them to tell America how they will deal with the many problems facing us)? Simply put, I don’t. Unless you personally know the candidates, or have experienced government under their leadership, it is next to impossible to know for sure what they will do and how they will react.
Even that is not much of a barometer at times, because who is to say they will approach the nation’s problems as they did when they were governor, or Congressperson? Things change as situations change.
So…who does a Christian vote for in the coming election? I have two measures that I use to try to determine who should get my vote. I could be wrong on both counts, I truly do not know. However, all I can do is go with what I know and so far, these two measuring sticks can work and they can especially work in a situation like we have today with candidates who seem religious, or even might be actual Christians. I’ll get to those two measuring sticks in a moment.
Let’s take a look at Mr. Obama for a moment. During his campaign, he rode in on a proverbial white horse. He looked good. The hype was real and it was supercharged. As far as the media was concerned, Mr. Obama could do no wrong. He said a lot, meaning he gave speeches and used words in those speeches. However, when it all came down to it, he mainly said “Change is coming!” and promised not raise taxes for anyone making less than $250,000 per year.
He literally took the office of presidency by storm, ushered in on a tsunami that was unlike nothing in recent history. It was incredibly annoying because no one paid any attention to the fact that he gave literally no details as to how he would fix America. He just said it would need fixing and change was coming to do just that.
Because of the two things I use as measuring sticks, there was no way that I could vote for Mr. Obama. He gave me no choice in the matter. I voted for the lesser of two evils, but there was no one that I was actually excited to get behind in that race.
So, what are my two measuring sticks? Simple, and they may be way too simplistic for you, but here they are anyway:
- the tone of the liberal media
- the candidate’s support of Israel
I told you they were simple. I note how the liberal, leftheaded media lampoons and lambastes the candidates. How does the liberal media view that person? In the case of Rick Perry, they’ve already shown us that they are trying to paint him as a racist. I’m certain those attacks will continue, even though there is no actual proof that Rick Perry is a racist. There is circumstantial evidence that both Mr. Obama and Eric Holder are racists, but this same media that has already castigated Perry can’t be bothered with that. They are too busy fabricating lies about Perry to take the time and shine the light on the Obama Administration.
No, it’s very clear that the liberal media does not like Perry at all. For me, that’s a point in his favor. Do you notice how this same media is no longer concentrating on Romney or Bachmann, or anyone else for that matter? Well, I guess Janine Garafolo went ballistic on disgraced Keith Olbermann’s radio show recently regarding Herman Cain, but does that really count?
For now, the media lap-dogs are going after Gov. Rick Perry with all they’ve got. Why? Well, because they don’t want him to have a chance against Mr. Obama. It could be that they simply don’t want anyone to have a chance against Mr. Obama because they want Mr. Obama to have a second term. If that was the case, then they would be going after all Republican candidates with equal fervor. No, they have focused their sights on Perry. Obviously, in their minds, Perry is the frontrunner and they need to get rid of him as quickly as possible.
As I said, for me, that is a point in Perry’s favor. The liberal media are scared – very scared. They are scared enough to artificially create false charges of racism where none exists. Something’s obviously afoot and I’ll keep my eye on it.
The other thing I noted is that I determine where a candidate stands with respect to Israel. Gov. Rick Perry says he stands with Israel and opposes the way this administration has dealt with Israel.
If Perry is telling the truth – and so far, I have not read or heard anything that would suggest he is not telling the truth – then that is another point in his favor. He supports Israel. That means that he would not do what Mr. Obama, Mr. Bush, Mr. Clinton and other previous presidents have done where Israel is concerned: tossed them deliberately under the bus.
It seems then that Perry would work with Israel, supporting them and building our relationship with that nation, instead of doing what Mr. Obama and other presidents have done. At one point, I seem to remember Mr. Obama promising to protect Israel’s security. He has not only not kept that promise, but he has gone the other way.
If Perry is elected, will he keep that promise to support Israel? I have no clue and as I say, I have neither seen nor heard anything that would tell me otherwise. In that case, I have to go by what the man says.
For me, I cannot vote for any candidate that does not – with open arms – support Israel. In fact, if that is the only thing they do that I agree with, I would still vote for them, if all the other candidates did not support Israel.
I think it is too easy for Christians to get caught up into the politics of the moment and start looking for that perfect candidate. We’re not going to find it, because He isn’t going to be returning to this earth until the end of the Tribulation. Until then, we have human beings. I think it is exceedingly important that our next president supports Israel. If he or she does that, I truly believe God’s blessing will once again shine on this nation that seems to be so God-forsaken. We deserve it because of the way we have treated Israel.
Mr. Obama is not really the problem. It’s his view of Israel that is the problem. In Matthew 25:31-46, we read about the Sheep and the Goats. This occurs after the end of the Tribulation, which our Lord ended as He returned to earth.
He no sooner arrives, then angels collect people from the four corners of the earth in preparation for the Sheep and the Goats judgment. I think it’s fascinating that these people are judged by one thing: how they treated Jesus’ brothers and sisters. In other words, those people who survived the Tribulation and Great Tribulation will be judged on the basis of their treatment of Jewish people. In my mind, a person cannot honestly and authentically support Jewish people during the coming holocaust unless they are actually believers; Christians. No one will stick their neck out for Jews unless they have the heart of Jesus within them.
Our nation could have the best minds come together and try to figure out how to fix the financial mess we are in. They could expend tremendous energy trying to reign in overspending and deal with the massive debt we have racked up. They might even make headway.
I firmly believe – and I could be absolutely wrong, so please cut me some slack – that we are where we are because of the way our leaders and many people within this nation have treated and continue to treat the apple of God’s eye, Israel.
If we want to get our house in order, I think it’s extremely important that we start with a leader who supports Israel. God can do miracles. He can fix our economy. He can reduce our debt. He can do all sorts of things, but I do not believe that any of it will happen until this country gets its house in order and the first order of business is to make an about-face where Israel is concerned. That is the number one problem that I believe needs to be addressed first and from that, I believe all the rest will fall into place.
Right now, America is under the shadow of God’s judgment because we stand opposed to His nation and His people. What are we going to do about that? If we do nothing about it, it does not matter who becomes the next president. However, if we are willing to stand up for Israel, we will automatically come out from under this shadow of judgment into the light of His glory and grace, as a nation.
I will admit that I am not the most politically oriented person. It is hard for me to stay on top of all the various subjects and topics within the political arena. For one thing, I have too much going on in my own life, and for another, I find much that goes on within politics exceedingly boring.
Because of that, I take my cues from the way the liberal media treats a candidate and that candidate’s own position on where they stand with respect to Israel. Again, you may think I’m being too simplistic, or just “out there,” but I truly believe that if this nation supported Israel, we would once again experience God’s smile on us. It may never happen. Our nation may never wind up supporting Israel like I would like to see. That’s in God’s hands.
For me, I have to vote for the candidate who supports Israel, because to me, that is far better than having the “perfect” candidate in office. In electing a candidate who supports Israel, we ultimately wind up supporting God Himself. If you cannot agree with me, that’s your choice of course, but at the very least, I hope that you will at least consider what I am saying.
Rick Perry may wind up not being the candidate I vote for and I’m certainly not going to tell you how to vote either. In the end, I want to be able to say that I voted for someone who supports Israel. In my opinion, that’s where it all starts…and ends.
