Komen for the Cure’s Waffling

Yesterday, the world was abuzz with the situation regarding Susan G. Komen for the Cure and their association with Planned Parenthood.  As most are aware, the organization decided to no longer fund Planned Parenthood with grants for breast exams.

Many pro-lifers were pretty excited and it was noted that donations to the organization had increased drastically because of that news.  I was one that donated.  Now, I’m reversing my decision.  Why? Simply because Komen for the Cure reversed theirs.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure announced Friday it was reversing its decision to end grants to Planned Parenthood, after facing mounting pressure from pro-choice lawmakers and accusations that the breast cancer awareness organization had bowed to political influences.” [1]

Gosh, I’m so glad they didn’t bow to the pressure to REVERSE their decision!  This is ridiculous.  Of course they felt pressure to stop providing grants to Planned Parenthood.  They also felt tremendous pressure to retreat from that decision and cave in to Planned Parenthood and other pro-death/abortion groups! Let’s be realistic about it.

We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives,” [Komen for the Cure] said in a statement.“[2]

If that is their mission, then one can only wonder WHY they are supporting Planned Parenthood in any way, shape, or form, since the largest part of Planned Parenthood has to do with aborting children – both boys and girls – before they are born. Hmm…

The statement from Komen founder Nancy Brinker and the Board of Directors defended the organization’s intentions. The group has claimed all along that its decision was not a political one and that it was merely setting responsible standards for grant money.” [3]

That’s gobbledygook.  It’s simply not true because if it was, then there would have been no reversal of decision.  If Komen for the Cure was simply “setting responsible standards for grant money,” then why all the hoopla and why the reversal?

Did Planned Parenthood all of a sudden change their standards so that Komen for the Cure could continue to fund them with grants? If so, they were able to do that exceedingly quickly, weren’t they?

If what Brinker says is true, then it is clear that the only reason they reversed their decision is due to political pressure.

So I gave $25 to an organization solely based on the fact that they had done something I greatly respected. Then I learn that it was given under false pretenses.  Now, I am trying to get it back.  Who knows if I will succeed, but I doubt that I am the only individual who is in this position.

You know, it tends to boggle my mind a bit with things like this.  A group makes an organizational decision and then flip-flops on it within hours.  How does that happen if not for political correctness?

It really doesn’t matter what Nancy Brinker or anyone else has to say on the issue.  They can paint it any way they want to paint it.

At least when Lowe’s and that other company quit supporting “All-American Muslim” with their advertising dollars, they bit the bullet and stuck to their guns regarding their decision.  You can respect a company for that, even if you don’t agree with their decision.

In this case, we have a giant flip-flop by an organization that is likely terribly afraid to have this type of publicity and doesn’t know how to handle it.  Who knows, but because the article said that “pro-choice lawmakers” were involved in the pressure for a reversal, maybe there were some alleged threats about future funding for Komen for the Cure. I wouldn’t be surprised frankly.

Whether or not I see my donation returned is yet to be seen.  The problem goes beyond this though.  Next time this group or another group decides to stop helping out Planned Parenthood, they will likely not see my dollars anytime soon for fear of a coming reversal.

Speaking of which, I wonder what Mayor Bloomberg of NYC is going to do now that he has promised $250,000 to Planned Parenthood to make up for the loss of funds through Komen for the Cure? Who knows, but maybe there will be a reversal on his part as well.
