Scientists May Have Been Wrong on Oil Spill

Will the latest fix hold?

Not long ago, I posted some information from scientists who made the dire prediction that it was impossible to cap the oil well in the Gulf.  Had they been correct, it would have spelled global disaster.

With the latest attempt to cap the leaking oil well, it appears that after 48 hours, the 150,000 pound cap is still holding.  While the world is not out of the woods yet, we may be getting closer.  If this current cap does not hold, the predictions of scientists will still be in place, billions of barrels of oil flowing into the ocean, the oil being picked up by the oceanic currents, an eventual collapse of the underground well resulting in a devastating tsunami.

One can only utter a heartfelt “thank you!” for this most recent turn of events, with BP finding some way to cap the spill.  It is too bad that it happened at all of course, but if humanity was not so dependent upon oil, there would not have been such a demand to find oil, anywhere it can be found.

The saddest part is that in general, humanity has likely not learned anything from this, except for the possibility of how to clean up oil spills better.  Greed still exists within the corporate world, and the demand for oil continues, by the average consumer.

Next time you’re out and about, check out how many vehicles are on the road carrying only one person, yours included.  We do it without thinking about it.  We normally make no direct connection between the need for oil with the way we drive.

As long as human beings need petroleum products, greed will exist at all levels of business.  As long as greed exits, the desire to pull oil out of the earth anywhere it can be found will also exist, irrespective of potential disasters.

We are all to blame, not just BP, and not just our government.  We all share the blame because we have all helped our world get to this point of oil dependency.  It looks as though this disaster may have been capped off before it became far worse.  We may not be so fortunate with the next one.
