Getting Angry About the Name “Jesus”

Have you ever noticed how incensed people can become over the Name “Jesus”?  In fact, the word “God” in general terms brings out the anger in most atheists – at least the ones that I’ve run across.  You may recall the leader of an atheist group who was completely opposed to the idea of a cross made of leftover steel beams lowered into the ground at the WTC memorial site.  He was seriously offended.  His blood probably began to boil a bit, I’m sure.

Now we have atheist groups misquoting Thomas Jefferson to make a point, or grabbing up the spaces that are normally held by nativity scenes during this time of year.  I’m sure – so that they are not hypocritical – these atheists do not celebrate Christmas at all, right?

If they do, they would argue that Christians are merely celebrating the leftover vestiges of some pagan festival so Christians are being hypocritical as well.  No we’re not.  When I celebrate Christmas, I celebrate the birth of my Lord and my God (as Thomas stated in John 20:28).  As an aside, please note that Jesus did not prohibit Thomas from referring to Him in such a way, nor did he chastise Thomas for referring to Him as “God.”

So to me, Christmas is a time of true celebration because without the birth of Jesus into humanity, I would have no chance at salvation at all.  It does not matter when I celebrate it, but it just so happens the world celebrates Christmas (hey, notice the word “Christ” in there? It’s not a swear word either) on December 25th and Jesus was likely born sometime in September.

At any rate, atheists become so offended and incensed when they hear the Name Jesus.  Many have no problem using it as an epithet though, do they?  I’m glad that my skin is far thicker than most atheists’ skin, otherwise I would be walking around seriously angry all the time because of how often I would hear the Name of Jesus being used as a swear word.

But there is absolutely something about the Name of Jesus that causes people to react.  There are generally two reactions, though a third one can be sometimes seen as well.

The first two primary responses are hatred or love.  People either love Jesus immensely for what they know He has done for them, or they hate Him.  Often they don’t even know why they hate Him.  They just do.  Because they hate Him, they hate His followers.  This often leads to ridicule of Jesus and His followers.  I’ve been on the receiving end of it quite a lot, but others I’m sure have had to deal with far more than I have had to, so I’m not complaining.

But consider something.  Most people today have no problem with Islam at all, especially as evidenced in the Muslims they see and know.  How can Islam be so bad if many Muslims seem to be so good and caring?  It usually has to do with the fact that these caring Muslims are either radicals in disguise or they are peaceful Muslims who understand the Qur’an allegorically.  Unfortunately for these Muslims, they won’t stand any chance at all against their radical counterparts.

The other day I took one of cars in for smog testing here in Georgia.  I pulled into one of the shops and the gentleman who waited on me was a very nice man.  He was also a Muslim.  He seemed genuine and peaceful.  We had a brief discussion about the Temple Mount in fact because he had a National Geographic chart on his wall that came with the December 2008 issue of National Geographic.  It was beautifully detailed so when I got home, I looked on-line and ordered that particular back issue.

At any rate, there was absolutely nothing about this man that I could dislike even if I wanted to do so.  I didn’t want to dislike him.  He seemed just like me, making his way through life, enjoying Creation and looking for better things.  What I thought was a bit ironic was that he was nothing like the Muslims on “All-American Muslim.”  Nothing at all.  He was real, not contrived.  I’ve known Muslims for years.  In fact, when I taught at one college in California, it was normal to have Muslims as well as Russians and a variety of other ethnicities in my classes.  I liked them all.  They are good people.  Most of the Muslims I came to know while there were very soft-spoken.  Again, is this a ruse or are they really peaceful?  I tend to think that they are what they project.  Having taught 4th through 6th grades for ten years in California public schools, you tend to learn when you are being “shined on” by some kid who thinks he knows far more than you do.  I also tend to know when someone is trying to suck up to me as the instructor for a better grade.

So the problem is not really with Muslims per se, but with Islam and those Muslims who believe that the Qur’an should be taken literally, all the time.  These are the Muslims who should be avoided and dreaded.  Unfortunately, there is a growing number of Muslims like these who yearn to bring heaven to earth through death and destruction of those who are not part of Islam, often called “infidels.”

Yet here in America, we seem to have rolled out the red carpet for Islam.  I have watched with my mouth having fallen open at the sights and sounds of Muslims acting brutish, spitting on non-Muslims, pushing, hitting, and kicking and this was done in Dearborn, Michigan!  I have seen them act with impunity as they gather with a rally cry of “Allahu Akhbar!”  I have watched as they turned a face filled with anger toward anyone who dared to try to discuss with them the problems of Islam.

Yet I’m willing to bet that most atheists have no problem at all with Islam.  Why?  Because this country was not founded on Islamic principles.  That’s good for them too, because had it been, they would not have the freedom to protest as they do now.

Atheists hate Christianity and I’ve heard (and read) more than one of them denigrate Christianity and all religions, blaming it for the atrocities that have existed since day one of human history.  They throw Hitler, Mussolini, and many other dictators who had some form of religion, but fully denied its power to save.  These they readily (and wrongly) equate with true Christianity as if merely saying that a person is a Christian makes it so.

Atheists are arrogant, for the most part.  They have convinced themselves that God does not exist.  In fact, many will tell you without equivocation that God does not exist, yet when asked to prove their beliefs, they throw the old “you can’t prove a negative” in your face.  Of course, they fail to realize that they must have found some way to prove it to themselves that God does not exist because they are more than confident that they are correct in their attitude and assumptions.

These same atheists who rail against Christianity, seem to not care when Islam is on the verge of encroaching into society.  They seem fine with it because I believe they see Islam as an old religion filled with superstitions – far more than Christianity.  They see Islam and see groups of people who have an A.D. 700 mindset.  Surely people like that are no threat to society today, are they?

But it’s more than that, in my opinion.  I fully and firmly believe that the reason people hate the Name of Jesus is because deep down within them, though they may have covered over the belief with many layers of hardened clay and dirt, they question whether they are wrong.

Paul tells us that this is the case in Romans 1:

18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

19Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

20For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

21Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

22Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

24Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

26For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

 28And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

29Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

30Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

32Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.”

I don’t know about you, but I find that naturally increasing degradation very interesting to say the least.  Paul states that God’s wrath from heaven is revealed against unrighteousness of men who…what?…hold the truth in unrighteousness.  Wow, fascinating.  So Paul is saying that people who know the truth, reject it out of hand, trying their best to cover the truth by living a life filled with unrighteousness.

Okay, what else does Paul say?  He states unequivocally that people are aware that God exists, but they deny it.  How do they know?  Because God has clarified that for them in His Creation alone.

Recently, it was announced that though they have tried, science has not found the “God particle.”  Really?  Wow, how could that happen?  Once again, science has failed?  Interesting, but there’s a big DUH.  I’m not saying that all science is rot.  There’s much about science that is wonderful and exhilarating!  But it seems hilarious to me when scientists miss the big picture because they are concentrating on the trees.

The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics causes things to go from order to disorder, yet science says we’re improving.  Science has no idea what holds atoms together.  They should fly apart because of their negative/positive poles.  They don’t though.  The Bible tells us that Jesus – Creator of all things – holds all things together (cf. Colossians 1:17).  Well, that couldn’t be correct, could it? It’s not scientific!

Paul says that when we stand before God in judgment, we will actually realize that while we lived here, we knew God lived.  However, some people – mainly atheists – spend so much time denying that truth that the lie eventually becomes truth to them.  That is scary to me, knowing that every atheist who stands before God will recognize and admit that he/she knew all along that God existed in spite of their denials to the contrary.

Paul goes on in verses 21 through 23, stating that though they knew God was God, they chose to deny that and instead preferred to serve and worship other things that are not God, but are merely gods to them.  Oh of course atheists have gods.  They worship things, whether it’s a car, a home, a family, themselves, their clothes, their riches (if they are rich), their free time – whatever they place an extremely high value on becomes their god and Christians can and do often make the same mistake.  Idolatry is just that, worshiping something that we turn into a god.  Atheists are people too and quite capable of worshiping things that become gods to them.  What they deny is a personal, holy God who oversees all things and will ultimately bring all of His purposes to fruition.

Notice in verses 24 to 32 Paul becomes extremely specific and its disgusting what we read.  I’m sure he was being as gentle as possible without coming right out and stating the obvious.  Of course, certain groups today deny that Paul is speaking of what obviously comes to mind when we read these verses.  It’s something else we are told.  Sure…

The natural degradation is found in:

  1. ignoring God
  2. denying God exists
  3. ignoring the natural consequences of these actions
  4. becoming completely involved in worshiping gods
  5. committing all forms of sin
  6. becoming even more unrighteous because of these sins
  7. becoming judgmental toward Christians and God Himself
  8. losing every sense of God-ordained morality, replaced with a morality that man deems wise

The truth is that of course, not all people become enamored with the gay and lesbian lifestyle.  However, all people who ignore God, then deny Him, begin to live lives that are truly reprobate, indulging in all the things that God says will only harm us.

Atheists couldn’t care less.  They believe they are free to live their lives as they wish and certainly, they are that.  However, just because they think that they have “arrived” to a level of freedom not found anywhere else, they are not free from the consequences of the sinful lives they enjoy.  If they are homosexual, AIDS could very well become a problem.  If they are not homosexual, but simply enjoy hopping from one bed to the next, sexually transmitted diseases could become a problem.

Do you notice that if there was never any divorce, the incidents of AIDS and other sexual-related diseases would literally be non-existent.  Too many people who claim to be Christians enter into and out of marriage like we change our clothing.  That’s not the way it is meant to be.

However, the worst part of the atheistic lifestyle (if you could call it that) is that they have no higher authority than themselves.  That is what precisely gets them into trouble.  They have – in essence – become their own god.  They rule their own roost.

When an atheist sees a true Christian – not one of those professors who merely says he/she is a Christian, but lives any way they want to live – that atheist starts to some sense of anger because a Christian reminds them of how God expects us to live.  Because to the atheist, God does not exist, they become angered at the Christian for reminding them of the “superstitions” that exist within Christendom and they resent it.  Who can blame them really?  Obviously, both Christians and atheists cannot be correct.  Someone is wrong and it is unfortunate for the atheist that they will not truly understand that they were wrong in this life until they stand before God in the next.

The same atheist can view Islam with a very dismissive attitude because to the atheist, Islam has never had any type of hold on him/her.  Christianity, either directly or indirectly has and that is what they resent.  It is for this reason that they must continue (they believe) to fight for the separation of church and state in spite of the fact that it seems clear enough that our Founding Fathers placed this provision within our founding documents so that the government would not create a religious system that everyone would be required to follow.

This was one of the biggest reasons why our founders left Great Britain and parts of Europe because the church was married to the state and those who were not Catholic had difficulties.  Our founders wanted a land that was based on biblical principles – which is what America is – without being forced to follow the dictates of the government with respect to religion.

However, atheists and others have turned this upside down to mean something it does not.  If a student wants to sing and song about Jesus during a school talent show, people become unglued.  “OMG – the school is FORCING religion on us! AHHHH!”  Hardly.  The young person is merely using a song of religious significance to them in a talent show.  The school itself is not promoting anything at all.  That means little to atheists who have no clue.

But in reality, I firmly believe it’s the Name of Jesus that gets people so riled up.  They don’t like to hear about Him.  If they use His Name at all, it’s as a swear word, yet I cannot think of one other religious leader’s name that is used in the same way.

Have you ever heard a carpenter smash his or her finger and yell, “Confucius!!”  How about “ALLAH!” Nope.  You’ll hear it used by radicals as a form of praise, but certainly not as a swear word.  No, when people become angered, they use all sorts of words as swear words, but generally they only use Jesus (followed by His “last” Name, which of course is really His title meaning “Messiah”).  They may use Godda*mn as well, but when you think of “God” I bet you generally think in terms of the Judeo-Christian God, not Allah, or anything else.

Atheists want a separation of church and state, even though they fail to understand the parameters concerning that issue.  Then I say these same atheists should stop using Jesus’ Name as a swear word.  Try “Allah” for a while and see what happens to you.

In the meantime, continue to give Islam all the space it needs to grow and encroach on American soil.  Keep ragging on Christianity as if it is the worst of all your evils.  If it was not for Christianity and the Bible, you wouldn’t be enjoying many of the benefits that you enjoy in this country.

Have you ever claimed bankruptcy?  Credit that with the laws of jubilee in the Old Testament.  Many of the laws within our legal system are based on Scripture.

So I guess when we consider all things, atheists have a pretty good life in this United States of America.  It’s primarily because of the founding fathers of this nation – most deists – but many understood the wisdom found within Scripture and used much of it to lay the foundations for this great country.  I resent the fact that so many atheists want to destroy what our founding fathers created.  Paul clearly outlines how things digress, going from bad to worse for those who consistently and continually denigrate God and His Word.  It’s happening in this country as it has happened in other countries.
