What Does the Lord Have for America?

September 7, 2012 at 9:15 AM 10 comments

I wish I knew what God’s plan for America was, but I truly don’t know.  I know how I’ve been praying, but the Lord is at the helm and His purposes – not mine – will prevail.

I have been praying that this country experiences a change in leadership.  I do not believe that what we have had for the past nearly four years has been good at all.  Obviously, there are many who disagree with me and they’re certainly entitled to their opinion.  But the larger question is what does God think?  What has His plan been?

I look back over the past few years and I distinctly recall the promises that were made to Americans in 2008.  We were told we would see an administration that was the very meaning of transparency.  We have not seen that at all.  In fact, we are still waiting to see college transcripts from the individual who sits in the Oval Office.

We were told that the man who would later take up residence in the Oval Office would unite the races.  We have seen the exact opposite occur.  In fact, the race card has been played more often than I can remember during anyone’s political career.  In short, things have gotten worse between the races and that is tragic.

We were told that the deficit would be cut in half, the economy would improve drastically, and jobs would become plentiful.  None of those things have happened.  In fact, the exact opposite has occurred.  Not only was the deficit not downsized, but 6 TRILLION dollars was added it it in less than four years.

Joblessness continues to be a problem with no real end in sight.

Recently, we heard from the man in the Oval Office about his plans for the next four years, if re-elected.  He says he can cut the deficit by 4 TRILLION dollars over the next decade, but if we consider that in less than four years, he added 6 TRILLION dollars to the deficit, cutting four trillion doesn’t bring it down to what it was before he took office.

As I read over the transcript of Mr. Obama’s speech at the DNC, I was very aware of the fact that he spoke with numerous platitudes that really do not define how he intends to do anything.

He spoke of two expensive wars – wars that he got the United States into, I’m assuming.  He did not specify which wars he was talking about.  Afghanistan?  Libya?  Northern Africa?  Iraq?

In other words, Mr. Obama’s speech was exceedingly vague.  He held out hope, but like he did in 2008, he hung his hat on words and phrases like “Change is Coming!” leaving each person to decide for themselves what that meant.

He says that we must have strong ties with Israel while pursuing peace, yet he’s not done that.  He has literally shoved Israel under a bus every chance he got.  Even now, he tells them that he will not support Israel if they attack Iran, in spite of the fact that Ahmadinejad continues to publicly threaten to annihilate Israel with nuclear armaments.  That is not what I call supporting an ally.

People in the Democratic party wrongly believe that Mitt Romney will turn back the clock on civil rights.  This is in spite of the fact that Romney’s father actually marched IN Civil Rights protests along with many others and including numerous black leaders.  I’ve seen nothing that would tell me that Romney is opposed to Civil Rights.  People like Eva Longoria have come to a different conclusion though.

I know that many Christians are concerned for this country.  I am one of them.  However, I think our calling remains to be concerned for individual people.  It is easy to become sidetracked into thinking that if we only had the “right” folks in Washington, DC, all would be well with America.  I think we have crossed a line, from which we really cannot return.  I also believe that if we focus on that change that has occurred within this country, it can leave us emotionally paralyzed.  Because of that, we will lose sight of the fact that we are here, behind enemy lines if you will, with the mandate to introduce lost souls to Jesus Christ.

The Great Commission as a mandate is very interesting.  It is not dependent upon the whims or changes within society.  It stands for all time as the mandate for Christians everywhere.  We are to witness to the lost and dying by our actions and words.

I think it is relatively easy for Christians to lose their appeal when things in society are going well.  In other words, I think it’s more difficult to be a consistent witness for Christ when there is peace, when no one has heard of Islam, when Socialism remains deep in the background.  These things give us the false notion that God is at work.  Certainly, He is at work, but He is always at work.

One of the more interesting things I see in Scripture is where there is great persecution, there is a great response to the gospel.  Is that what God is planning?  Is that the direction in which He is moving?

In Revelation 7, we read about the sealing of the 144,000 Jewish evangelists.  These are used by God to spread the gospel of His Kingdom.  Interestingly enough, immediately following this, the scene switches to heaven where we see a multitude – “a great multitude which no one could count” (v. 9) – who had been killed on earth and who were now before the Lamb.  They are martyrs for their faith in Christ.

It would seem that persecution does more to save people than good times and peace.  It’s way too easy for fallen human beings to become enamored with this world during good times.  We tend to forget that our purposes here on earth are not necessarily to have a career, start a 401k, live life to its fullest, then die.  We are here as authentic Christians to introduce dying people to the King of kings in order that they might receive the same salvation that we have.

So, I return to my original question.  What does God have planned for America?  Will Mr. Obama be re-elected, continuing to play some purpose in God’s overall plan?  If so, we can be assured that – as Mr. Obama was overheard saying on a hot mic – he will move far left.  Frankly, I’m not sure how much further left he can go, but apparently, there’s room to move there.

Or, God may be so inclined to move Mitt Romney into the Oval Office.  I wish I knew, because I have no idea.  I tend to think there will be a change this November, but I’m simply making an educated guess.  I’m not speaking as a prophet, because I am not a prophet.

I do know this:  God will only allow the things to transpire that move His purposes to fruition.  If Mr. Obama does not do that, he will be replaced with someone who does.  If Mr. Obama is found to be useful to God, then he will remain.

The temptation is to think that we – as Christians – need to move this country back to some ideal setting of what we believe it was in the past.  God is moving toward the fulfillment of all of His remaining promises.  While I know in general what those promises are, I do not know all the details as to how they will occur.  This doesn’t mean we should avoid voting.  It doesn’t mean that we cannot comment on what we believe is wrong with our society.  Yet, we must do it to honor God, not humanity.

In the meantime, let’s continue to seek His will and the lion’s share of that is preaching the gospel – in word and deed – to those who are perishing.  It’s something I need to continually remind myself of as well.

Very good post Fred. I don’t agree obviously with everything you said, but it certainly stimulated me to think about what you said.

You probably should have read this article before you accused me of saying that I believe God was FOR America.

Unfortunately Simon, I would appreciate it if you would even keep your compliments to yourself. They do nothing for me since I know how you actually think. They are more like backhanded compliments (or direct slaps across the face) than anything else.

Obviously, you agree with me very little. That much is clear, Simon. I’m not the moron you think I am that I’m not able to discern just exactly how little we agree on things.

“He spoke of two expensive wars – wars that he got the United States into, I’m assuming. He did not specify which wars he was talking about. Afghanistan? Libya? Northern Africa? Iraq?”

Even you would have to admit that at least to independent voters, his foreign policy credentials look pretty good – especially compared with Bush? He got the US out of Iraq, which was sapping gold and lives, and which could have been better put to fighting in other theatres.

Obama also fought a very smart war in Libya, which I recall many detractors (were you one Fred?) said would end up just like the quagmire of Iraq. Yet the US achieved its objectives relatively quickly, gained much diplomatic capital (unlike Iraq which just annoyed the Arab world) and saved many US lives.

And finally, it was under Obama’s watch that Osama bin Laden died. Yes, it was the SF that killed him. Yes, perhaps Obama was lucky. But Obama still took the Johnson-like risk of facing huge political loss if the mission turned badly. Moreover, as he is C-in-C, and this happened on his watch, he is entitled to some credit.

If what I was saying isn’t true, the Democrats wouldn’t be talking up foreign policy so much this time and the Republicans talking it down – a reversal of the usual situation.

No, I don’t have to admit anything of the kind.

Mr. Obama put us INTO wars in Libya and northern Africa. He did so by referring to them as “kinetic military actions” so he would not need to worry about obtaining Congressional approval. Bush on the other hand, obtained Congressional approval (twice) and did all things according to the law.

Obama’s involvement in Libya simply ousted one dictator and has allowed the Muslim Brotherhood to stretch their wings, the same as they have done in Egypt. Obama’s goal has been to encourage Sharia law and to that end, he has been successful.

Regarding bin Laden, Obama said “NO” three times before he was finally willing to give the go-ahead and there is some intel that more than suggests Obama would have said “no” again, but he was overruled. Of course he is entitled to some credit and he got it. He trots that out whenever he can though.

If all you can point to is the fact that bin Laden was killed on Mr. Obama’s watch and that he has instituted socialized medicine, that’s not much of a record, frankly, certainly not compared to the promises he made in 2008. In that regard, he has been an utter failure and if it was Bush and not Obama, the press would have been unmerciful to him.

Mr. Obama has kept nearly zero promises and with his most recent “acceptance” speech at the DNC, he has simply given us more of the same.

In under four years, he has added 6 TRILLION dollars to the U.S. debt, yet he “promises” to reduce the national debt by 4 TRILLION over the next ten years – whoopee. He has singlehandedly spent our nation into an economic downturn that even the most intelligent person may not be able to pull us out of.

Beyond all of this, it is interesting to see how negative his campaign is toward Romney. Yet, in 2008, the very things he said about running a negative campaign (those who do, do so because they have no record to run on) is coming back to show him for what he is.

Mr. Obama is a sham, propped up as a puppet by those who control him. He has no sincerity, no real concern and the only thing he is truly interested in is being seen as “cool.” Just ask his 70,000 (fake) Facebook followers.

He doesn’t mind when Harry Reid calls out Romney for allegedly not paying ten years worth of taxes (yet, two of those ten years’ worth of taxes were made public), but apparently, we are not allowed to see Mr. Obama’s college transcripts. Why is that? Other candidates have no problem with that and if they delay, the media is right their to call them on it. Not so with Mr. Obama though. I want to know what his grades were and I also want to know why he and his wife are no longer allowed to practice law anymore. The more Mr. Obama keeps silent about these things, the more people want to know and we have a right to know.

Regarding the birth certificate, Mr. Obama’s own attorney recently admitted in a court of law that the birth certificate shown on the White House website is FORGED. She tried to use that as an argument in FAVOR of Mr. Obama’s eligibility. We don’t even know the exact age of Mr. Obama.

Mr. Obama is THE consummate Manchurian Candidate and it is starting to show. I would not be at all surprised if the global elite is going to dump him in favor of Mr. Romney. Romney doesn’t have all the baggage that Mr. Obama has and they’ve probably grown tired of trying to suppress it by buying off the media. I learn far more about what’s going on in America from OUTSIDE sources (sources not associated with U.S. news bureaus) than anything from ANY of the networks (including FOX News).

“If Mr. Obama does not do that, he will be replaced with someone who does. If Mr. Obama is found to be useful to God, then he will remain.”

Fred, what makes you so sure God is on America’s side? Doesn’t every country, including enemies of the US, have believers who think God is on their side?

What makes you think God is for America and doesn’t in fact see America as an evil power in the world under the control of Satan? With the continued human rights abuses by the US approaching that of a military dictatorship, with military tribunals, indefinite incarceration without trial, or the targeted assassination of US citizens, and the simple wanted destruction through continued military action by US forces, the US hardly seems like a ‘Christian country’ to me.

I don’t excuse Obama here – he is just as bad as Bush and the others before him. I don’t think it would make a squat of difference if Romney became President either. The imperial president has risen and will continue to wage war against people’s freedom – foreign and domestic.

I did NOT say God was on America’s side, Simon.

My total point is that God USES leaders to promote HIS purposes. If God chooses, He will keep Mr. Obama in office for another term but only to further His purposes.

I really wish you could read my words for understanding, Simon, but it appears you are too busy attempting to push your own agenda in spite of the actual meaning of my words.

God is on GOD’S side. He puts leaders in place and disposes them – all according to His purposes.

I don’t necessarily believe God is on America’s side at all and I would appreciate it if you would read my blogs twice, or even three times before you decide on what you think I mean.

God’s purposes supersede any and every countries purposes and intents.

The ONLY country that God sides with is Israel and that has NOTHING to do with the people of Israel, but as Ezekiel says throughout, God sides with Israel solely for the SAKE OF HIS HOLY NAME, which the Jews have dishonored time and time again.

You need to take some time to actually study the Scriptures, Simon instead of coming here trying to catch me at every juncture. You are no better than a Pharisee (and NO, I am not equating myself with Christ – I am simply saying that you are so bound and determined to catch me in an inaccuracy that you are blind to what I am actually saying most of the time).

I have said it before – Romney and Obama are not that different. Romney is slightly more toward the center but STILL to the left. IF Romney became president, things would slow down and there would be some semblance of conservatism in the White House. If Obama is re-elected, things will speed UP and go further left much quicker. This is why Romney is the lesser of two evils.

All the true conservatives were knocked out of the race months ago.

“Or, God may be so inclined to move Mitt Romney into the Oval Office.”

But how do you feel about a Mormon being President? Do you even consider Romney a Christian? Could you and like-minded people bring yourself to vote for a Mormon?

Did you read my article, Simon?

Mormons are part of a cult.

I have Christian friends who will not be voting in this next election.

For me, it is a matter of the lesser of two evils.

Fred, the simple answer is – a lot more left.

Because you live in a country whose politics is so much more to the right of every other, you probably don’t realise that in most Western countries, Obama’s views would be considered moderately conservative whilst the views of Romney and Ryan extremely conservative. As say that as someone who is considered a conservative in my own country but to you appear left-wing.

As a simple example, Obamacare is very similar to the healthcare reform introduced by Australia’s most conservative Prime Minister John Howard (one of George Bush’s staunchest conservative allies in the world). We have a private mandate, where if you earn a certain income you must buy private health insurance or pay a penalty, but it is premised on conservative principles of self-reliance, self-responsibility and to ensure a viable private health care and medical insurance industry. I recall Romneycare was introduced with similar conservative ideals.

Actually, Mr. Obama is much further left than Romney is and they are BOTH on the left.

Mr. Obama is not even close to being moderately conservative. By what scale are you measuring that? I am measuring it against the U.S. Constitution. You are measuring it against other countries which has nothing to do with anything, much like most of your argumentation.

Australia is a Parliamentary government. America is a Constitutional Republic. You make no sense at all, Simon as if comparing America to Australia is like comparing apples to apples.

Who cares what happens in Australia? The ONLY question is whether or not Mr. Obama can do what he did here in America and even the U.S. Supreme Court called it a “tax,” which in and of itself is unconstitutional and Mr. Obama knows it which is why he and his administration try to deny that it is a tax, but merely a “penalty.”

It is forcing people to buy something that they should not have to buy with no way out.

If Obamacare is so good and so right, why is NO ONE in Congress going to have it? Why is Harry Reid’s state nearly fully exempt? Why is Nancy Pelosi’s California District exempt? Why are religious institutions being forced to buy into it even when their religious beliefs are at odds with parts of it?

Mr. Obama is moving this country toward Socialism, something that currently exists to some degree in places like Australia. Because of that, you see no problem with Obamacare, but the problem is what it is doing to this country in spite of the guidelines set forth by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, two documents that have nothing to do with Australia.
