Perilous Times are Here

I’ve referenced 2 Timothy 3:1-5 on numerous occasions here and in books I’ve written. Many are certainly familiar with Paul’s terminology there in which he describes the fact that what he calls “perilous times” will be part of the “last days.”

What I’d like to do is seriously break these verses down into separate blog articles. I think it’s extremely important to get to the root of what Paul is saying. Let’s face it, it’s easy enough to read Scripture and not let it sink in. In fact, as we read verses that we’ve become familiar with, it’s even more difficult to focus because we think we already know what we need to know about them. I find that’s true with me at times.

So let me start by quoting the five verses in Paul’s third chapter to his protege, Timothy, from his second letter, second chapter.

1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. (KJV)

The above verses really are a mouthful and only when we begin to look at the individual phrases that Paul uses to describe what he believes will be “perilous times” toward the end of this age, can we begin to fully understand exactly what will be/is happening in the world that promotes the type of savage thinking that he envisions.

I’d like to start this series by looking at the first verse: “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.”

We need to understand that the term “last days” essentially means the last human directed age prior to the physical return of Jesus in victory. This last age or days includes the seven year Tribulation period and all that will be included in that terrible time, consisting of 21 judgments poured out by God Himself. Even though some people believe God’s “wrath” does not begin until the middle of the Tribulation, it seems clear enough from the text of Revelation alone that God directs all of the 21 judgments even though some of those judgments pit people against people. God did this numerous times in the Old Testament. I believe that this coming “perilous times” also include the Northern Invasion of Ezekiel 38-39.

These events cannot happen in a vacuum. The situation in society must be ripe for these things to occur. What I believe we are seeing in society with riots, protests, looting, arsons, “autonomous zones,” killings and the general mayhem and destruction that appears to be supporting these events, is the building of the frame so to speak that will ultimately support the coming one-world government that Daniel revealed would be the final human-led kingdom ruled by the coming Antichrist.

It would be impossible to arrive to that one-world government without a good deal of chaos occurring before it comes to fruition. The phrase “Order out of Chaos” is ostensibly the guiding belief system of many who look toward and actually seek a one-world government in which socialism rules the day. Of course, the super rich and powerful will be exempt from that socialism and will actually live in the upper realm where capitalism is celebrated and enjoyed fully. The rest of us who are not part of that circle will be forced to “enjoy” what the rich and powerful allow us to have and that will be socialism leading to communism.

It is clear from Revelation that this coming final man-led world order will promise many things, but will ultimately seek to enslave the entire world. This will all be done masterfully under the guiding power of the Antichrist, who will be fully endowed with power from Satan. In fact, in 2 Thessalonians 2, Paul seems to indicate that this coming “man of sin” will be so enveloped with Satan’s power that his ability to deceive the masses will be nearly complete. People will fall over themselves in order to attach themselves to him in some way. When it is finally made law that all who wish to buy or sell must take his “mark,” people will clamor to do so, much like the Roman soldiers of old gladly tattooed the name of their commanding officer on their person as a show not only of solidarity, but unending loyalty.

But the question is how will the world get to that point? I believe Paul is making it very clear in the five verses of 2 Timothy 3 quoted above. It is a great idea to look into what he is saying and if we can, uncover the depth of meaning in each phrase he uses.

PERILOUS TIMES
So, exactly what does the phrase “perilous times” mean? From the words alone, we have some inkling certainly, but delving a bit into the Greek might offer more insight.

Commentator Adam Clarke notes that the term “last days” (used just before the phrase “perilous times”), often signals the days of the Messiah and essentially goes back to the destruction of Jerusalem (AD 70). He notes that the term can also mean any portion of time after this leading up to and including the physical return of Jesus as Lord and King.

Constable notes that the phrase “last days” likely “…refers to the days preceding the Lord’s return for His own (i.e., at the Rapture). They are “last” not because they are few but because they are the final days of the present age.” [1] So we are actually in the “last days” that will conclude with the return of Jesus.

So Paul, in short, was warning Timothy (and us) that these particular days that we are living in are destined to be exceedingly dark. The words “perilous times” mean “terrible,” “desperate” times.

What we are seeing in society certainly reflects this and I believe much of it has to do with Marxism and their 45 goals to overcome and overturn America. It almost appears as though nothing is being done to stop it either.

Recently, in Seattle, as you know a group of BLM and AntiFa fascists took over a ten-block portion of downtown Seattle. They were essentially given free reign to do what they wanted to do. It appears that the mayor told the police to stand down. The BLM/AntiFa crowd immediately set up barriers to keep people from coming into “their” autonomous area. They also allegedly started shaking down businesses to provide them with things they needed to survive. Apparently, the leaders of this autonomous movement misunderstood that if they were truly autonomous, they’d rely on no one or nothing outside of their own autonomy.

As time went on, another shooting occurred with one more dead. During this time, “protesters” went to the mayor’s house and vandalized it. At that point, the mayor became incensed because they came to her personal property, though she previously praised them for their “summer of love.”

The autonomous group of fascists and the area itself has recently been cleaned out by the police. In fact, reports indicate that the police cleared it out in just under an hour with hardly any resistance. What did BLM/AntiFa win here? Nothing. They won nothing but they created millions in vandalism and damage that the taxpayers are going to have to pay for all because politicians like Seattle’s mayor didn’t have the fortitude to do something early on.

It is also very interesting to note that the co-founder of Black Lives Matter has recently stated that she (and ostensibly the people within BLM) are trained Marxists. This should make all of us stand up and take notice because Marxism is a real threat and virtually always has been in the USA. Marxists (Communists) have sought to destroy country after country, replacing the governments with Marxist regimes. When asked what it is they want, the answer after thinking was, “we need to make more noise.” Clearly, these people do not know what they want and it also seems clear enough that they are being used as pawns to usher in a new world order by helping to overthrow the rule of law in the United States.

We’re all familiar with Senator Joe McCarthy from decades ago who was convinced that Communists were attempting to infiltrate America in key positions of the government, schools, colleges and the like. Though he was often panned and ridiculed then, it turns out he was very right. Many of the people that were “blacklisted” because of their association with the Communist Party were in Hollywood as writers, producers, directors and actors. Many others were part of major Ivy League universities.

It is remarkable that today, people in Congress can actually speak in favor of socialism (which simply leads to Communism), and few take them to task over it. It is becoming the accepted mark of anyone who wants to appear to be “courageous” or “woke.” But what does Marxism actually stand for and is there a chance that it has taken over major aspects of American society? It would seem so but in order to make an accurate assessment, it would be helpful to look at some of the main goals of Marxism. Are those goals helping to create the “perilous times” that Paul spoke of almost 2,000 years ago?

Fortunately for us, in 1963, a senator read the 45 goals of Marxism into the congressional record. They are there forever and anyone can look them up. Also fortunately, the Internet makes that very easy, so as we go through the five verses quoted above in this short series, we will contemplate and consider some of the goals of Marxism and how they might connect to do what Paul warns was going to happen during the final portion of the last days.

Here are just a couple that I’ll quote here:

• 11. Promote the U.N. as the only hope for mankind. If its charter is rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one-world government with its own independent armed forces. (Some Communist leaders believe the world can be taken over as easily by the U.N. as by Moscow. Sometimes these two centers compete with each other as they are now doing in the Congo.)
• 16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.
• 17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers’ associations. Put the party line in textbooks.
• 18. Gain control of all student newspapers.
• 19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations which are under Communist attack.
• 20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policymaking positions.
• 21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.
• 23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. “Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art.”
• 24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them “censorship” and a violation of free speech and free press.
• 25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.
• 26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as “normal, natural, healthy.”

The above are interesting to say the least, but look at these two, which are directed to work specifically against Christianity:

• 27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with “social” religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity which does not need a “religious crutch.”
• 28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of “separation of church and state.”

What is happening in America has been happening for many decades. We are seeing the fruits of it in society today. Certainly under Barack Obama, more of these things came to the fore, but they didn’t start with him. As a reminder, these goals were read into the congressional record way back in 1963, but they had already been underway in many parts of America.

Paul’s words are coming true today as never before and it is clear that Christians need to understand what is happening because all of this is moving the world toward the final empire spoken about in Daniel 2. It is coming. There is nothing we can do to stop it. What we can and should do is use this time to draw closer to the Lord, submit ourselves to Him for His use of us as evangelists to those who are lost. That is why we are here. Yes, we can certainly enjoy life along the way if it affords us those opportunities, but the main reason we are here is to glorify God. This happens as we look to the future allowing it to impact the way we live now.
