Perilous Times are Here: Lovers of Self

This is the second in a short series on 2 Timothy 3:1-5, so I’ll repeat those verses here as we get going. Last time, we dealt with the phrases “last days” and “perilous times” shall come as we approach the end of the age. We noted that the Last Days actually began with the life of Jesus and certainly existed in Paul’s day as well. As time has moved us to this point, we are moving toward the end of the Last Days, which includes the Rapture, the Tribulation, the Millennial Kingdom reign of Jesus and the Great White Throne Judgment following that. We also noted that the coming Tribulation contains 21 judgments poured out by God Himself onto the earth and He will use those to judge the world and cull for Himself the final Jewish Remnant. That Remnant will go into enjoy the fullness of the Land that was originally promised through Abraham.

1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. (KJV)

So let’s take a closer look at verse 2 in this article, which talks about exactly how corrupt humanity will become as we approach the end of days prior to the return of Jesus.

Notice Paul says “men will be lovers of their own selves.” What we are seeing today in society is exactly this fact occurring throughout society. With few exceptions, men and women have become far more self-centered than ever before. It is the desire to do what is best for yourself foremost, in spite of the needs of others.

From the Greek word “philautoiit literally means to love yourself richly. This is the true meaning of self-centeredness and narcissism. The person who loves and adores him/herself cannot see the needs of others, or if seen, couldn’t care less about them. What matters to the “self-lover” is that his or her needs and wants are always met over the needs and wants of others.

Because of this mindset, these people are also very covetous. They want everything. They cannot get enough “things” to satisfy themselves. Another way to think of this, also from the Greek (philargyroi), is the sense of being “lovers of money.” These folks never have enough wealth, homes, cars, or other things. They believe they “deserve” it and it should naturally be theirs to have. How dare you stand in their way!

Paul also says that people during the Last Days will be “boasters” and “proud.” These two concepts go hand in hand. People who are proud of themselves or their accomplishments are not normally afraid to boast about it, whether anyone likes hearing it or not. They also don’t like it when others are not as impressed with them and their accomplishments as they are about themselves. Quite often this translates to very wealthy people who believe, because of their wealth, they are far above other “mere mortals.” They can sometimes come to a point of pitying the little people, but more often than not, the average person is simply seen as a “useless idiot” put here on this earth for their good pleasure.

The Bible has the exact opposite mentality regarding wealth and trying to become rich. Here is simply one example from the Proverbs:

Do not weary yourself to gain wealth,
Cease from your consideration of it.
When you set your eyes on it, it is gone.
For wealth certainly makes itself wings
Like an eagle that flies toward the heavens. (Proverbs 23:4-5 NASB)

Not many decades ago, people in general were not like this. There was a fair amount of respect given and received between people. There were standards that people followed. For instance, the only people who swore in public were considered rude or uncouth. Now, it is the standard way of communicating for far too many people. Their limited vocabulary gives them away. It is the result of all the pride and boastfulness, along with the self-love and laziness that people exhibit in society. It’s all based in the “me” mentality.

To be “proud” as Paul lists next, is to be arrogant. We’ve all heard people talk about themselves as though they were completely self-made. What they fail to understand is that they have been given certain gifts by our Creator. Remember, God makes the rain fall on the just and the unjust without respect of persons (Matthew 5:45). In essence, God does not look at a person whom He knows will never come to a saving knowledge of God and decide, based on that, that He will withhold gifts from them. That’s not how He works.

It is those gifts that often propel people to avenues of success. Look at the people who can truly sing or play instruments well. Certainly, in most cases they’ve fanned that gift into a flame, but God gave them that particular gift and interest in the first place. Take a child musical prodigy like Mozart, who was playing the piano at a very young age. How was he able to do that, from years of study and hard work? No. That gift was simply implanted into him. He probably could NOT disobey his inner desires for music.

The arrogant person, like Satan, truly believes they made themselves what they came to be. Their arrogance blinds them to actual reality.

The participle here is perfect in tense, and speaks of a person who in the past has come to a state of such pride, and is so puffed up, that his mind as a permanent result is beclouded and besotted with pride. [1]

Paul’s progressive revelation of the character of people in the Last Days is very accurate and insightful. He starts out describing people and builds one concept upon another. The natural result of being so in love with yourself because of who you think you are is to become a “blasphemer.” A blasphemer is someone who “speaks impiously of God and sacred things, and injuriously of men” (Adam Clarke). These people always have something to say and aren’t afraid to say it, even though they may well be far off base.

Jude says as much throughout his short epistle, but if we simply focus on verse 8, we get the idea.

Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and blaspheme the glorious ones.

Jude is referring to “apostate” teachers (but this clearly applies to many types of people in general today as well). There are too many heretical teachers pushing people away from the truth of Jesus and His Gospel. These teachers arrogantly teach error and are often surrounded by people with “itching ears” who’d rather hear their lies than truth.

Paul then in a sense sums things up for this verse by listing that people will be “disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy.” Ultimately, it often starts with how parents raise their children. What we are seeing in society today is an entire generation of young people who have been taught the principles of Marxism, whether they know it or not. The lies they have imbibed and embraced now guide their lives. For them, they don’t care what their parents or any authority figure says to them. In fact, they believe their life’s mission is to destroy and overturn by any means necessary.

Black Lives Matter is a clear case in point. Just looking at their statement of beliefs is eye-opening. Here is simply one paragraph from their own website:

We are guided by the fact that all Black lives matter, regardless of actual or perceived sexual identity, gender identity, gender expression, economic status, ability, disability, religious beliefs or disbeliefs, immigration status, or location. [2]

A close look at BLM proves the organization is built on Marxism. In fact, “Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors said in a newly surfaced video from 2015 that she and her fellow organizers are ‘trained Marxists’ – making clear their movement’s ideological foundation, according to a report.” [3]

If you are not familiar with Marxism, aside from the fact that it is another word for “Communism,” it needs to be stated that the 45 goals of Marxism read into the congressional record in 1963 have nearly been completely implemented. The goals of Marxism in general are to overturn governments of non-Marxist regimes, creating in their place, Marxist regimes. This is essentially what BLM and AntiFa are all about.

The trouble is for these people, they never see beyond the “revolution.” When asked what BLM wants, one person associated with BLM thought and after a few seconds simply said, “We need to make more noise.” Their “noise” is an attempt to start a civil war. Don’t be caught up in that!

The recent CHAZ/CHOP area of Seattle that had been taken over by AntiFa and BLM became nothing close to the Marxist Utopia they thought it would become. In fact, after setting up barriers around their 10 block area and “securing” the area with guns and bullies, they did not know what to do. They kept putting out lists of things they said they needed – food (vegan), clothing, guns & ammo, cigarettes, etc., keeping them dependent upon people from the outside of their “autonomous” zone.

Eventually, like Lord of the Flies, brutality and even murder occurred and finally, the whole experiment in “summer of love” as the Mayor of Seattle called it was shut down. This is MARXISM and if we look throughout history even as recent as South Africa with Mandela’s Marxist regime replacing the previous one, we see the results of a South Africa spiraling out of control into Marxism, which pushes out “western” civilization and biblical morality, replacing it with Left Wing ideologies.

Make no mistake. Marxism cannot cohabitate with biblical Christianity or even conservative morality and politics. The two are diametrically opposed to one another. Only one can stand.

Society is really collapsing today. There is little hope that intelligence and common sense will prevail. This has been building for quite some time and even though Barack Obama did not start the process, under his administration, Marxism was allowed to grow exponentially so that we have what we have today. I’m sure you’ve noticed all the Leftist mayors and governors who appear to be completely blind to the fact that violent crime (arson, looting, rioting, and more), have been happening under their administrations. They don’t appear to care and allow it to continue.

In Georgia, Gov. Kemp, after giving Mayor Bottoms of Atlanta time to get the violence under control, has decided to send in the National Guard since it appears that the mayor isn’t interested in actually doing anything about all the civil unrest and even deaths that have occurred. She announces that people need to stop shooting each other as if that order will make a difference. She’s not doing her job.

While it is not the government’s job to keep people safe, it is the government’s job to uphold the law and enforce it whenever it is broken. Gov. Kemp has decided enough is enough.

But will we see an end to all of this? Probably not anytime soon and it may well become worse and worse. If nothing happens to curtail things, then it is clear that the final portion of the Last Days are upon us and we’d best draw close to Jesus, trusting Him to guide us through what is befalling the world.

Christians have a responsibility and our responsibility is to God. In short, Christians have one job in spite of what is happening in society at any point in time. Our job is to preach Christ and Him crucifiedThe only real healing and justice that can happen in society is when it happens with one person at a time and that is only through Christ and the salvation that only He provides! There is NO other way and this is why in society there are many checks and balances with lower courts to higher courts to eventually the Supreme Court. Even there, true justice might not occur, but it has a far better chance of happening than if there was only one court and one group of judges.

Christian, in spite of how bad and how lawless society is becoming, our job and obligation remains the same and that is to share the Gospel with our lives and our words.

I’ll leave you all with a link to this article. While I do not agree with everything he says, he makes cogent points about Marxism and how we’ve been asleep at the wheel while Marxism has made great gains in society. If you’re interesting, feel free to read it and use your own wisdom and discretion.
