War in the Middle East Soon?

Will Iran's Nuclear Reactor Go Offline Before it Goes Online?

Recently announced by Joel Rosenberg, “Russia has just announced that it intends to allow the Iranian nuclear reactor facility located in Bushehr (near the Persian Gulf) to go live in August.”[1]  As Rosenberg points out, this puts Israel is a critical position, of having to do what Menachem Begin did in 1981 as a preemptive strike against Saddam Hussein’s nuclear reactor in Iraq.

Ezekiel 38 tells of the Gog-Magog War.  Some conservative biblical scholars believe this war will occur prior to the Tribulation, while others believe it will not take place until well after the Tribulation begins.  The first few verses of the chapter indicate an interesting phenomenon though.

Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,  And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords: Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet: Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee,” (Ezekiel 38:2-7; emphasis added).

From the above text, we gather that the Lord is referring to the individual who leads this military invasion, whom He calls “Gog.”  We know this is not a name of a person, but a rank (“chief prince of Meshach”).  We also understand Him to be saying that He (the Lord) is the One who will cause Gog to turn against Israel (“I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth”).

Let’s consider the situation in the Middle East right now.  Iran desperately wants nuclear bomb capabilities, so they are lying to the world about their nuclear reactor being built for peaceful purposes.  They have also made their position against Israel widely known.  Iran would like Israel gone – off the map – out of the area.  Part of the world believes sanctions against Iran is what is necessary and even President Obama has indicated this, yet as things in Iran continue to move forward, leaders of nations are strangely quiet about these sanctions.  It’s almost as if they have said outwardly that sanctions should be implemented to appease people who firmly believe this should be done, but as it turns out have only mouthed the words with no intention of actually following through.

So Iran continues their course of action.  Once their nuclear reactor goes online, is there a question as to what they will do with a nuclear bomb?  It would appear as though Israel has always been in their sights.  Having a bomb is what they want and getting rid of Israel is also what they want, so if we put two and two together, we have little trouble seeing into the future.

But now we have Russia and their stated position.  It turns out that they are siding with Iran, which is not unexpected.  Since the United States is obviously against Israel and seems to be in favor of only Arab nations in the Middle East, Russia certainly has nothing to fear from the U.S. and Dmitriy Anatolyevich Medvedev (along with his mentor, Putin) is quite aware of that.

So let’s say that Israel, realizing that this August is right around the corner when Iran “lights” up its nuclear reactor, must decide on a course of action.  Does Netanyahu ignore Iran’s nuclear capabilities from August onward, in spite of all the anti-Semitic rhetoric that has issued from Ahmadinejad’s mouth, or does he consider a preemptive strike on Iran’s nuclear reactor, mirroring Begins’ strike against Saddam?

Let’s say that Israel, realizing the risk of ignoring the nuclear threat is too great, sends jets in to destroy the nearly completed reactor before it goes on line.  Is that it?  Once destroyed, does everything calm down?  Is it over, with Israel winning a decisive victory?  I cannot see into the future, nor do I have a crystal ball, but considering the fact that Russia is now in the picture siding with Iran, we may have a problem.

If Israel makes a preemptive strike against Iran and successfully destroys their nuclear reactor, overruling their ability to make their own nuclear weapons, it may well be that Russia will take offense at that and use it as a reason to come against Israel, saying that what Israel has done amounts to an act of war.  IF this is the case, then it could very well be that we will see the makings of Ezekiel 38 come to pass.
