Rise of the Apes and What China Does to Bears

My son and I watched “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” today. I enjoyed the movie and caught a number of nods to the original “Planet of the Apes.” At one point, one of the primate caretakers was watching the original movie and there was Charlton Heston. In another instance, the newspaper reported that Icarus – the rocket headed to Mars – was “Lost in Space.”
I won’t give out any spoilers, but as I watched the movie, I was reminded of how science uses animals as test subjects so that they can determine whether or not those substances are safe for humans. No, I’m not a member of PETA, but it does bother me at times when everything on this planet it seems, is done because of money.
I just learned yesterday the real reason Scotland may have released the Lockerbie bomber was quite possibly due to oil. Gee, really? I guess I shouldn’t be so unaware at times. Of course oil is what motivates much of the world. Right now, Libya has tons of it, so I’m sure at least some of our “diplomacy” is directed at what we can do to play nice with the next government that rises so that we can purchase oil from Libya.
Instead of drilling here or offshore of America, we are essentially dependent on foreign oil. Yes, I remember the Gulf disaster and it seems almost coincidental, but I won’t say conspiratorial, that the situation happened as it did. Of course, right after that, new drilling was put on hold indefinitely while the United States became more dependent upon foreign oil reserves.
Years ago, auto manufacturers should have been investing in alternative energies, but they didn’t want to because oil was so plentiful. While it may be plentiful, it will eventually run out, but more importantly, whether it’s plentiful or not, making this nation – as large as it is – dependent upon something from unstable foreign governments is simply too tricky and almost insane.
Like most companies though, their goal is to please stockholders. If stockholders are happy, then the company is happy. The only way to make stockholders happy is to ensure that the value of their stock increases. Because of that, why would you waste valuable time and money trying to find alternative means of energy, when oil is just sitting there?
In the movie, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” it’s the same story. A huge pharmaceutical company is on the verge of creating a drug that will hopefully eliminate Alzheimer’s. Things look good until something bad happens and the whole thing is scrapped. The director of the company – a guy by the name of Jacobs – sees dollars flying out the window, so quickly moves the company onto different projects in the hopes of once again please the Board of Directors, who will in turn – if all goes well – please the stockholders by making a ton of money from new projects.
Things go downhill from there and unfortunately, Caesar, one of the primates from the company, winds up being taken to a primate care center under court order. There, a multitude of apes, orangutans, and chimps are kept locked in small cages except for a few hours each day when they are released into a large “play” area for a short period of time.
As a Christian, I believe we were given permission and the right to use the resources of this earth for our own benefit. I don’t believe that we were given the right to destroy things for the sake of money. In essence, this is what is happening in the movie with the company, Gen SYS. The higher-ups could absolutely care less about the animals and in reality, I don’t think they care that much about humans either. What they care about is the almighty dollar bill. This type of greed picks away at our humanity until animals, who live by instinct, are often seen as more intelligent and caring.
While I realize that corporations are very important because corporations provide jobs for people, it seems to have become very easy for these same corporations to become money-making plants and little else. It needs to stop, but it won’t, especially in these difficult economic times where rich people and stockholders are loath to invest in the economy because they aren’t guaranteed a return on their investment. Reminds me of the movie “Wall Street,” starring Michael Douglas who became extremely upset one day because he only made 10 million dollars that day instead of the 100 million he was counting (or some ridiculous figure like that).
People who use and abuse the natural resources of this planet in essence are raping the world, taking what they want, no matter how much harm is caused. It doesn’t seem to matter to these people either.
I just read on another website that in Northern China, apparently bear bile is a big deal, because Chinese people use a derivative created from it for to reduce everything from fevers to colds. Whether it works or not is anyone’s guess, but there is a big demand for bear bile because of this.
Unfortunately, what these companies put bears through is indecent. They capture the bear and place it in a very small cage. There was a photo of one of these plants where cages were stacked two high and very small. This is where the bear lives out its life. The captors create a hole in the bear’s stomach region so that they can actually create an opening to the stomach, allowing them to take out the bile whenever needed. In order to keep the bear from doing something to the hole, some type of vest is placed around the bear.
Think of it, you are a bear enjoying the wild. One day, you are caught and unceremoniously plopped into a small cage. There, some moron operates on you, creating a hole that allows him to extract bile any time he wants to do so. For the remainder of your life, this is what you do. You never go out into the sun, You never stretch your legs. You never enjoy the wild. This is your fate.
Recently, one of these bears gave birth to a cub. The cub was removed from the cage and another imbecile started to create a hole in the cub’s stomach region. The cries of the bear incensed the mother bear, who actually ripped out of her cage and went to rescue her cub. The “surgeon” fled for his own safety and the mother bear, sensing that her cub was doomed, took the cub and squeezed it until its life was gone. Then, that same mother bear ran as fast as she could toward the nearest wall, crashing into it head first. After the first try, she was dazed. After the second try, she had succeeded in killing herself.
Is this what human beings have become? So intent on using the resources on this planet, that we resort to abusing animals and even destroying them? How is this anything like what God would have us do? How do you face God one day knowing that you were part of this picture? It’s tragic and it should be stopped.
As I say, man was made – I believe to have authority over the earth and the things on the earth. He was given orders to have dominion over it and subdue it. Unfortunately, we have gone well beyond that in many cases. Why? It is solely because of the greed within many who cannot seem to have enough money for themselves.
I don’t want to be rich, although when I was younger, I toyed with the idea of trying to find some way that would make me rich. I’m glad I’m not. I have a very small portfolio along with my wife and it’s nothing that will create untold wealth for us and as far as I know, the companies we have invested in are not the type of companies that I have described.
The rich may have most of the money, but they also share a great deal more responsibility. I don’t envy them and I don’t wish I was one of them.
I note that in the book of Revelation, chapter 20, when Jesus returns, He will set up His Millennial Kingdom. What is fascinating to me is that obviously, people continue to work. They work hard and they seem to enjoy it. Jesus is the world ruler and under His guidance, everyone is treated fairly. I also note that there doesn’t seem to be any type of formal paycheck that people receive. If there is no formal paycheck, that means that money – as we know it – is not used. If money is not used, there is very little chance of becoming greedy because Paul tells us that it is the love of money that is the root of all evil (not simply money, but the love of it). If you remove money out of the picture, it’s funny how greed can take a holiday.
I look forward to those days because I’m tired of paying taxes and footing the bill for people who don’t even want to work, and because politicians tell us that we need to allow 100,000 Muslims from Somalia or somewhere else to enter this country. This means I will be supporting more people who are completely uneducated and probably have little to no work skills, even if they do want to work. This does not mean that they are stupid or that they cannot be taught. It simply means that for the longest time, they will be supported by taxpayer dollars and who knows, but after months or even years of receiving free benefits from our government, why would they want to change that? Seems to me that this is just the flip side of greed. On one side, you have the rich who want to do whatever it takes to earn as much money as possible and on the other side, you have the ultra-poor, who want to maintain as many free benefits as possible for the lifestyle they have come to know and love.
There is a lot wrong with the way this world is currently set up. One day though, things will change. One day, people will stop using and abusing various aspects of Creation for their own profit. One day too, people will work and if they don’t, they won’t eat.
