Chicago Wants to Cut Crime by Taxing Guns and Ammo

It really gets tiring reporting and commenting on the things that politicians do that really have no basis in reality, especially when liberals are somehow connected to the equation.  It seems to be the norm for them.  Case in point is Toni Preckwinkle, Cook County Board President and her desire to see crime in the Chicago area.

I read an article today that indicated that Ms. Preckwinkle wants to take a bit out of crime by placing additional taxes on handguns ($25 each) and individual bullets ($.05 each).  She estimates that this will take in an additional 1 million dollars per year, “money that would be used for various county services including medical care for gunshot victims.” [1]

Of course, since criminals do not legally purchase their guns or ammo, they won’t be paying that additional tax.  It will be the law-abiding citizen that pays it.  I’m not sure though how any of this is designed to cut down on crime if the money raised goes for “various county services including medical care.”

Maybe I’m missing the point, but considering the fact that this is Chicago we’re talking about, I’m suspicious.  It seems to me to be another ploy to make it more difficult for people to purchase weapons and ammo.  Let’s face it, Chicago had to be sued (and lost that suit) by the NRA and several other organizations because they made it illegal for homeowners to own a gun to have as protection in their own homes.  From what I know of the history of Chicago and its determined effort to at the very least, curtail the 2nd Amendment, this latest attempt seems to fall in line with that.

To make matters even more clear (or convoluted, depending upon where you sit), “Preckwinkle insists the ordinance is far more about addressing gun violence than raising money for a county that faces a deficit of more than $100 million next year.”  How?

Preckwinkle then states, “The legal gun shops in suburban Cook County are a conduit for crimes in Chicago. There’s no way around it.” [3]  There was nothing in the article that contained any information that proved or backed up her comments with any type of proof or clarification.  She appears to be saying that there is a good deal of illegal activity connected to these gun shops.  If that’s the case, I would think one or two sting operations would bring that to light, allowing city and government officials to do something about it.  As it stands, she has made a claim without backing it up with anything (or that information was left out of the article).

As numerous individuals stated in the article, an additional tax – especially in an economy as bad as this one currently is now – will simply push people to go elsewhere for their gun and ammo purchases; out of Cook County.  This will simply create hardships for the businesses that exist in Cook County.  It’s the businesses that will suffer.

Of course, if this moves forward, lawsuits will also pop up.  Preckwinkle seems undeterred.  “You can’t make decisions based on the basis of whether or not somebody’s going to sue you or then you’ll never do anything.”  True, but I guess using common sense ahead of time is not too much to ask and if you know that lawsuits will be coming, then wouldn’t it be more prudent to save the county some money by not having to defend in court something that will likely be overturned anyway?  I guess that’s too much to ask when it comes to people who really seem not to have the capacity to think clearly.

People like Preckwinkle likely want guns outlawed.  Here we have Chicago, which has been run by Democrats for generations, with some of the biggest numbers when it comes to murders and crimes with guns.  What do the Dems want to do?  Outlaw guns by effectively making it more difficult for the average person to buy them, while at the same time taking a bit out of the businesses that pay taxes to the County.  This is how liberals think and while it certainly makes sense to them, it does not make sense to the prudent person who understands that they are simply playing a game.

If you think of some of the worst cities in the United States where crime is extremely high and poverty level is also high, you think of cities like Detroit, Chicago, NYC, Oakland, and too many others.  These cities have been controlled by liberal Democrats who live to provide more government handouts to as many people as possible because they want these people to become dependent on the government.  A person who is dependent on the government has no real say in the matter and once they get used to getting the freebies, they will do just about anything to keep those freebies coming.

Liberals won’t change their tune anytime soon.  The most we can hope for is that more and more people will see through their facade, understanding that being beholden to the government is simply another form of slavery.  This is what we have today on a Federal level and Democrats in many cities throughout the United States are following suit.

If liberal loons continue to think as they think, there is only one choice:  vote them out in the next election.  That’s the only way things will begin to turn around, as we are seeing now.

Sure…let’s put additional taxes on bullets and guns in Cook County.  Let’s say it passes and is upheld in courts of law.  It goes into effect.  Will we see a lowering of crime statistics in Cook County?  NO.  The only thing that will change is that the county will receive additional funds, gun stores will likely lay-off people or go out of business, and people will continue to buy their guns and ammo from other dealers outside of Cook County, thus also reducing the expected revenue that Preckwinkle says the county will receive.

Criminals will not be affected one way or another.  They laugh at this kind of thing because they know no law affects what they do, who they rob, or who they kill.  They do what they do because they are gang-bangers who live outside the confines of the law.

No amount of anti-gun laws or tax-related schemes will reduce the criminal element.  In the 1950s in NYC, gangs like the Mau Maus created their own weapons for gang wars, including the Zip Guns that they made for themselves.  It’s really a no brainier, but of course, you must have a brain in the first place to understand how things work.

Of course, in reality, people like Preckwinkle do have a brain.  They also have an agenda and while they say it’s one thing, it’s clearly something else.  They simply assume that the average person does not have a brain that can see through the charade that is being foisted upon them.

A polite society is an armed society.  Criminals will always have guns.  What they count on is the average, law-abiding citizen NOT having one.  Liberals want to make that a reality that the criminals can always count on.  We are the pawns in their game of trying to eliminate the 2nd Amendment.
