Why Are Satan and Demons Allowed to Produce Miracles? Part 2

Just because it appears miraculous, does not mean it came from God.

The desire to “make contact,” “do miracles,” and have “great supernatural ability” is something that humanity seems to have always wanted to do. I often wonder how Adam and Eve truly reacted to the fact that a serpent sauntered up to them on legs and began talking with them? What did they think? There was no indication in Scripture that animals talked with them before this incident (Genesis 3). Yet, they seemed not to be surprised by it. Eve merely carried on a conversation with this serpent as though she were talking with Adam.

Evidence has been located that something like snakes with legs once existed, though of course, the experts cannot agree on whether it was actually a snake or something else. If it was a snake, then they’re also quick to point out that this must have been a “transitional” form of the snake. Anything to emphasize the working hypothesis of evolution. The Bible tells us that snakes had legs and walked at one point. Because the snake or serpent allowed Satan to use his body, the entire snake species was punished and made to crawl on its belly forever.

But my question about a serpent that talked remains. What was their reaction to this phenomenon? They didn’t appear to balk and treated it like an intelligent species. Who really knows what Eden was like prior to the Fall of our first two parents? It’s very difficult to know, though that hasn’t stopped many from writing fanciful narratives of what they believe it was like, based on the thinnest of evidence.

We understand that Satan has tremendous power and we mentioned that in our last article. It stands to reason that if Satan exists in the spiritual realm that what he is and because of it, what he does is simply very natural for him. To us, it would appear very miraculous or supernatural when he creates something in this natural realm that he does normally in the supernatural realm.

We also mentioned that the Israelites were forbidden from seeking out these beings and their abilities either through human agents or directly. However, that command did not stop them and it is clear from Scripture that many who were not part of Israel became practitioners of the dark arts and occult practices.

When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, you must not learn the abhorrent practices of those nations. There must never be found among you anyone who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, anyone who practices divination, an omen reader, a soothsayer, a sorcerer, one who casts spells, one who conjures up spirits, a practitioner of the occult, or a necromancer. Whoever does these things is abhorrent to the Lord and because of these detestable things the Lord your God is about to drive them out from before you, (Deuteronomy 18:9-12).

I find it fascinating that God did not prohibit Satan and his minions from doing what they do naturally in their realm, here in this natural realm. Instead, God simply forbade the Israelites (and Christians as later reiterated in the NT in numerous places) to avoid going there. The door was never to be opened to that realm. Why not? Because those spiritual beings have no good intentions for humanity at all. Their goal is to help Satan bring his promises of Isaiah 14 to fruition, where he will become complete and total ruler of this world and make himself “like the Most High,” (Isaiah 14:14), for a very brief period of time. It all comes down to that, which, in my opinion, is the very reason he makes initial contact with Eve in the first place.

Of course Satan wanted Eve (and Adam), to fall from being in relationship with God, through sin as they did. But Satan’s primary purpose was to elevate himself! He wanted/needed to become absolute ruler over the earth and everything on it. To do this, he had to rule over humanity so he set out to ensure their failure. It worked. He tempted. They succumbed and sinned. They (we) became enslaved to Satan through the sin nature that was born due to disobedience and rebellion.

But of course, God knew this would happen and free will gave Eve and Adam the opportunity to put their own desires into motion. Yet, God was certainly not mocked and His ultimate plan of redemption and glory to Himself unfolds and will culminate in His complete and total victory over all that oppose Him.

In the meantime though, we are seeing a growing sense of what people term the miraculous in life. It is miraculous because the normal, average person cannot replicate it and has no explanation for it. Therefore, it is supernatural, miraculous, and out of the ordinary. I fully believe this is due to the coming “storm” of what will be seen as miraculous activity that leads directly up to the great revealing of the coming Antichrist (2 Thessalonians 2:9).

I personally believe that Satan has been whetting the appetites of humanity in earnest since before Moses. However, it was during Moses’ day that he had a direct confrontation with Pharaoh and his wizards who were well-educated in what we call the “dark arts.” These men were able to replicate numerous supernatural events created by Moses and we touched on that last time. In fact, throughout Scripture, we read of one event after another that brings Satan’s power to the fore. We see people chasing after soothsayers, witches, and what we would call “Palm Readers” today because people even back then wanted to know their futures. They wanted somehow to hook into this magical power that they believe exists all around us doing so would allow people to see miracle after miracle happen, so goes the belief.

The sad part is that many Christians believe this same thing and chase after God for this express purpose. Instead of coming to Him giving Him ourselves wholly so that He can work in and through us (it’s called walking in holiness), too many want to “tap” into God’s power for the sole purpose of experiencing that power and witnessing miracles. People are drawn to it.

This is what makes the New Age Movement so potent and powerful. It promises astral projection into “inner” space where the secrets of the universe will be opened to us and we will experience it. I’ve read many books by people who are involved in aspects of the New Age that testify to their own pursuit of the miraculous. Many speak of soaring through supernatural dimensions, out of their bodies, seeing things that would rival what Paul saw in 2 Corinthians 12:3-4.

And I know that this man (whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, God knows) was caught up into paradise and heard things too sacred to be put into words, things that a person is not permitted to speak.

Notice Paul says that this person (and many scholars believe Paul was referring to himself here), was not permitted to speak about what he actual saw. Yet, in today’s New Age arena, people not only speak about what they see, but write best-selling books, offer workshops, and teach others how they too, can experience the supernatural trip of a lifetime!

In more modern times, there have been very well know people who have invested their entire lives in the pursuit of spiritual beings and the experience these beings promise. Whether it has been Madame Blavatsky, Alice Bailey, or some other contemporary individual who has gained a following, the truth is that Satan has people who have kept contact alive and the door open to the occult, in every generation. Because of this, he has been able to expand his role, influence, and significance throughout global society over time.

The desire by average people to see what is behind the veil into the spiritual realm has always existed. But one cannot help but wonder whether governments have gotten involved in these pursuits as well and done it with taxpayer dollars? We’ll investigate that next time.
