Anti-Gunners Capitalize on Arizona Shooting

January 10, 2011 at 9:46 AM

“One of the fiercest gun-control advocates in Congress, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), pounced on the shooting massacre in Tucson Sunday, promising to introduce legislation as soon as Monday targeting the high-capacity ammunition the gunman used.

“McCarthy ran for Congress after her husband was gunned down and her son seriously injured in a shooting in 1993 on a Long Island commuter train.

“My staff is working on looking at the different legislation fixes that we might be able to do and we might be able to introduce as early as tomorrow,” McCarthy told POLITICO in a Sunday afternoon phone interview.

“Gun control activists cried it was time to reform weapons laws in the United States, almost immediately after a gunman killed six and injured 14 more, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, in Arizona on Saturday.”

It would appear that the ONLY reason McCarthy ran for Congress was because her husband was gunned down.  While the shooting of her husband was killed and her son seriously wounded is a tragedy, the belief that if guns are taken out of the hands of law-abiding citizens, all will be right with the world is not only wishful thinking, but is severely detrimental to the average citizen.

Each time a shooting by some whacko somewhere occurs, the anti-gunners come out in full force attempting to create new laws that make it more difficult for the average citizen to own a gun.  With all the anti-gun laws that currently exist, is this nation actually safer?  It might be if the criminals were willing to follow the rules, but that’s not going to happen.

When guns were outlawed (illegally) in Chicago, crime skyrocketed.  Why?  Because criminals knew they would meet little resistance in terms of deadly force.  Since career criminals never purchase guns legally, they don’t have to worry about laws that attempt to remove guns from law-abiding citizens.  Laws such as that go in their favor, reducing the chances of them being shot when engaging in a home invasion.

It is patently unfair and unconstitutional to create laws that remove guns or make them much more difficult to obtain for law-abiding citizens, when in point of fact, law enforcement can do precious little to remove guns from the criminal culture.  A case in point is the new ammo law that goes into effect February 2011 in California.  According to this new law, it is against the law for anyone to purchase ammo online.  All ammo purchases in California must be done in person and with a thumbprint.  Why was this law put into effect? Simply because the bill’s originator – a liberal democrat from Los Angeles – wants to keep ammo out of the hands of gangbangers.

This reminds me of the law that went into effect that says in order to buy certain over the counter medicines, such as Claritin-D, I must show my license and sign for the purchase.  I am also only allowed to purchase a limited number of this type of medicine monthly.  The reason?  It was created to cut down on the amount of people purchasing the drug to make other drugs from it, like meth.  I’m a law-abiding citizen.  When I buy Claritin-D, I do so because I want to control my allergies.  I do not purchase it because I am intent on making illegal drugs.  Has this new law stopped abuse?  Nope, but that does not matter at all.  Laws will NEVER, EVER act against the criminal element.

I was watching a National Geographic documentary on the gang MS-13.  They have NO problem getting ANY drug needed, including normal prescription drugs.  Why?  Because they have connections.  They can get anything from pain pills, to hardcore street drugs.  The laws that are in effect to curtail illegal activity have NO bearing on these individuals.

With respect to California’s new ammo law, will it have any effect on criminals?  No.  Nada.  Zilch.  Nothing.  Criminals will not be hampered in any way.  They will continue to obtain guns and ammo their way – illegally.  What it will do is curtail the law-abiding citizen’s ability to purchase ammo.

Currently, the ammo law simply says I must purchase ammo in person, and by leaving my thumb print.  I can easily see a day when a waiting period will be placed on ammo sales.  Then a limit of how much ammo can be purchased in a given period of time will go into effect as well.  None of this will have any effect on criminals or gangbangers.

Liberals use anti-gun laws for one purpose:  they are working to eliminate guns for the law-abiding citizen in order to be able to better control the populace.  An unarmed society is a controllable society.  While the liberals shed alligator tears because they are saying their new laws will save lives and even if it only saves ONE life, the new law(s) are worth it.  Are they?

Tell that to the pizza delivery driver in Richmond, VA who was accosted by a man with a shotgun demanding money.  The driver drew a handgun he was licensed to carry and shot the suspect.  Even after he shot the suspect (who had been armed with a shotgun), he stayed at the scene after calling 911, and kept reassuring the suspect that help was on its way.

Or tell Larry Goldstein, retired school teacher who was awakened by a noise in the middle of the night.  He picked up his .38, went downstairs and confronted two men who had broken into his home.  They appeared to be carrying a pistol and an M-16 rifle (legally purchase, I’m SURE).  Fearing for his life, Goldstein shot one of the intruders three times.  That intruder was arrested by the police and his accomplice fled the scene.

How about a woman working at a convenience store?  A convicted felon burst through the door and put a gun in her face. The woman’s husband who was sitting at the end of the counter out of sight of the robber, drew his gun and shot the suspect.  The suspect will be arrested upon his release from the hospital.

How about Ethel Jones, a 69-year old grandmother heard noise at her front door one evening while home alone.  The burglar removed an air conditioner from a window and crawled inside.  The grandmother ran to her bedroom and returned with a handgun, shooting the burglar three times.  He ran but was later arrested at a hospital.

Casey Bartram returned home with his girlfriend and 2-year old son.  He noticed the house was darker than he had left it and the door was not locked properly.  He did not know that there were two masked men inside his home.  One – who had a gun – sprang up from his hiding place and jumped toward Bartram.  Bartram pulled his gun (carried legally) and fired one shot, killing the suspect.  The second suspect fled, but was later arrested.

In another incident, a homeowner was roused by a knock on his front door.  He went to the door, carrying his handgun.  The two men told the homeowner that they had caught someone trying to break into his vehicle.  The homeowner thanked the men and tried to close the door.  At that point, the two men quickly asked the homeowner to help jumpstart their vehicle.  The homeowner declined.  The men then asked for a drink of water, and as the homeowner tried to close the door again, one of the men stuck his arm in the door and fired a gun he had.  The homeowner  shot one of the suspects who was arrested when the police arrived.  The other suspect got away.

Stephen Boyechko, an 80-year-old man saw an intruder break through his window of his home.  He grabbed his .32 caliber and asked “Why did you break my window?”  Instead of answering the question, the intruder came all the way into the home and ran at the homeowner.  The homeowner shot the man twice and held him for police.  The intruder is a suspect in numerous home robberies.

How about this one?  A woman who was eight-weeks pregnant and a gas station manager, left work and walked to her car with a bag of money to make a bank deposit.  She saw a man approach as she entered her car, so she quickly locked the doors.  The man got to the car and pulled a gun.  He then demanded money and began kicking the car door.  The woman opened the door and handed the robber all the money.  The robber did not leave, but COCKED his gun and pointed it at the woman’s head.  Meanwhile a man with a concealed weapons permit standing not far away at a gas pump saw the robbery.  He drew his weapon and yelled “Back away from the girl!”  The robber ran with the money, but without firing a shot.

An 11-year-old girl was left home after her cousins left to run an errand.  Shortly thereafter she heard a commotion at the back door.  She originally thought it was her cousins playing a joke.  She ignored it and turned the volume on the TV louder.  Three masked men – one of whom carried a rifle – were trying to pry the door open with a crowbar.  The 11-year-old ran to get her mother’s gun.  As soon as the suspects saw that she was armed, they ran.  The girl has just learned how to shoot a rifle a few days prior.

It was tragic that McCarthy’s husband was so brutally taken from her from a criminal’s gun.  That is a tragedy each time something like that happens.  Consider the above true stories about how the average citizen was able to save their own life or someone else’s because they had access to their legally obtained gun.  Consider also the tragedy that would have occurred had they NOT had access to their guns.  McCarthy no doubt has nothing to say about these situations, likely considering them to be aberrations.

There are MANY examples of how armed law-abiding citizens have used guns to save themselves or others.  Unfortunately, you will never hear about these situations from the media, or people like Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) because it throws a monkey wrench into their purposes.  Above all things, they want an unarmed society, however, not ONE law they pass has ever or will ever affect criminals.
